The characters answer the phone by saying "Ahoy," instead of "Hello," because when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, he originally encouraged people to answer the telephone with a hearty, "Ahoy," rather than the now-traditional, "Hello." For some reason, it didn't catch-on.
