By Peter Belsito.A seemingly casual comedy proceeds methodically to personal disaster and maturation for two New Yorkers.
In Permission directed by Brian Crano, the question is, “What if?”
By that we mean before you — anyone — makes a “permanent” life-setting decision what if (???) one could instead examine alternatives Just to know “they”, i.e., “other choices” are out there and you “lived them”.
What if??? indeed….
A New York couple has been happily living together for a number of years.
On the verge of marriage, a friend suggests that maybe they owe it to themselves to play the field a bit before tying the knot forever. No jealousy, no recriminations, it’s just sex, right?
Will, husband to be played by Dan Stevens is even there and approves of wife to be Anna’s (Rebecca Hall) would-be lover who tries to pick her up at a local bar.
So what...

Rescue efforts are still underway as thousands in the Houston, Texas, area are feeling — and fleeing — the effects of Hurricane Harvey. In some cases, these refugees in need of help or rescue are pets and other displaced animals local to the region.
From Good Samaritans like Andrew White, who helped his neighbor rescue her dog (see above) with his boat, to everyday residents like Naomi Coto carrying her dog to a safe place as she evacuates her flooded home (main photo), heart-tugging stories from Harvey’s frontline abound. Here are a few of the most extraordinary examples of animals overcoming...

Stephen Colbert trashed President Trump’s recently released 2018 budget, “A New Foundation for American Greatness,” which the CBS host labeled as “grandiose” a title “as calling a grocery list: ‘A Bold Vision for Yogurt and Dog Food.'” “It turns out he’s building that foundation out of the ground-up bones of poor people,” Colbert continued mocking the financial document, “because this budget cuts things like the food stamp program … and the children’s health insurance program.” “I know this is an unpopular position these days, but I believe children should go to the doctor and eat,” the “Late Show” personality continued,...

Warning: contains spoilers for Gotham season 2.
Back in June, after a long day of interviews, I sat down with Cory Michael Smith in a swanky London hotel to talk about all things Gotham, both the second season that had recently concluded its run on TV, and the third season which hadn’t yet begun filming. Mr Smith proved to be a very open interviewee, letting us in on a detailed account of how he ended up in the show in the first place. Here’s our our 15-minute chat...
Just to get it out of the way first: can I just ask, have they started trying to put you in hats and canes and spandex yet?
I have not had spandex... I may or may not have tried on different hats.

Serena's in Italy for a tennis tourney -- and became curious when she saw her hotel had a special pet menu that included a salmon and rice dish. Serena ordered it up for her dog Chip -- but decided to taste a spoonful for herself first. Bad Decision!!! "Let's fast...

Mile High Horror Film Festival
www.mhhff.com
Oct. 9-12, 2014
Littleton, Colorado
The 5th Annual Mile High Horror Film Festival was a twisted cornucopia of live performance artists, vendors, horror icons, FX artists, shorts, full length features, classics, and live industry panel discussions that drew the most rabid of fans. The repetitious problem of this particular festival is that it is structured in such a way it is impossible to see and do everything, leaving the most enthusiastic of attendees with nagging doubts and fear of “missing something”.
Opening night featured the original 1977 The Hills Have Eyes with all it’s glorious, non-pc dialogue. Original star Michael Berryman (Pluto) provided behind the scenes stories in an engaging Q&A session preceding the screening.
Hosted by The Alamo Draft House, Champion of the Independent Film Genre, Mhhff is growing in attendance every year. With over 80 films from 17 countries,...

This short thriller has played at a slew of film festivals and won Best Horror Thriller at Comic-Con. It will gross you the hell out. Seriously, it is gross, although without being really graphic. It relies more on the power of suggestion to make you squirm. Called “Dog Food,” it was directed by Brian Crano, and stars Amanda Seyfried, who is maybe my favorite, and Cory Michael Smith, whom you may or may not recognize from Gotham (he plays Edward Nygma). David Craig (not Craig David) also stars.
"Dog Food" is about a hipster-ish ethical butcher in Brooklyn who receives threats from animal rights activists.* You’ll probably see things coming from a mile away, but the ending is a surprise. Like I said, it isn’t graphic, but there is a tiny bit of profanity that may make this Nsfw without headphones.
*Parts of it reminded me a bit...

A dog is man's best friend, and it's easy to understand the heartache when a canine is lost or missing. But in Brian Crano's short "Dog Food," he takes that premise that gives it a nasty twist. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Cory Michael Smith, and David Craig, the 18-minute short film tells the story of a butcher who loses his dog, and the girl who he's been interested in coming into the picture in an unexpected way. After premiering at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, "Dog Food" has been on a helluva run to over 20 festivals around the world. Now you can watch it with a click of your mouse below, so check it out, it's a nice little treat for Halloween.

"You probably don't stock this in your shop." What better way to freak people out for Halloween than with something that is totally fucked up? If this short didn't have a Hollywood cast included, I probably would've skipped right over it (especially running at 18 minutes) but alas, here we are, sharing with you the one of the craziest shorts I've seen yet. Titled Dog Food from writer/director Brian Crano (@briancrano), the short stars Cory Michael Smith, Amanda Seyfried, David Craig and an adorable dog. Tip: don't watch this if you're eating, or about to start eating food anytime soon, as you may lose your appetite. Oh and I should say that, yes, the director is actually a dog owner/lover. Which might explain the way this ends. So have fun! The only short synopsis available: "When Declan loses his dog and best friend, Ralphie, his life starts to unravel.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Cory Michael Smith (Dog Food, Camp X-Ray) has joined the cast of Gotham as Edward Nygma, the man who goes on to become iconic Batman villain The Riddler. He'll be a guest star in the pilot, but the option is appparently there for that role to then be expanded into a series regular. Recent iterations of a younger Nygma - in "The New 52" continuity - have portrayed him as an unhinged employee of Wayne Industries, but here he'll be "a brilliant young forensic scientist working for Gotham Pd and a penchant for speaking in … rather cryptic language. Inquisitive, eccentric and outgoing — yet socially awkward — he wants to be liked, but he doesn’t quite know how." How do you guys feel about this news?...
