There are so many of the usual elements in this movie including several of the usual plot components. Jess' family business is in jeopardy, and they need the contest money. Jess is bitter about what she believes was Luke's betrayal years ago in keeping quiet about his father then. As usual in this genre, the animosity gets quickly overlooked almost as if Jess' memory was wiped clean.

There were three ways the contest could have gone. There were two ways Luke's dad could have gone and in this case it is the more common one. But there was really only one way Luke could have gone. Luke knows he should tell Jess about his dad's plan, but any regular rom/com viewer knows how that will turn out. We also know what choice he will make in the end. Kudos for a little twist adding some complexity to the conflict between Luke and Jess that threatens to ruin what is starting to rekindle but it still goes the usual direction. As an astute viewer might guess it creates its own opportunity.

It often seems like Tyler Hynes can have chemistry with anyone opposite him and he does here with Katherine Barrell. The acting is mostly good although it seemed at times that Barrell tried to hard.

I'm not a fan of TV contest shows. They steal screentime from the romantic relationships. There are predictable within a few outcomes. You at least know the lead with financial trouble will make the final and somehow the results will provide what is needed. And so often, the epilogue, not the romantic one, is basically the same and it is here.

In short, we have a write by numbers plot with one small twist. The actors make the entirety watchable but no great highs or lows.

Another cheesy reality spin
MickyG33324 March 2024
6.8 stars.

Whenever Hallmark does one of these reality tv show attempts, it usually falls flat. I can't recall many that worked for me. Something about how they incorporate the elements of a reality tv show (in this case it's competition show about remodeling classic cars and showing off auto mechanic skills), comes off as really cheesy and fake.

This woman is supposedly the best mechanic around and helps her dad run his shop. The man is played by Hynes and he does the same schtick that is displayed in almost half of his roles: bad boy, biker, blue-collar, cool as a cucumber...In this story he supposedly wronged her many years back, but he feels bad and she has some minor struggles dealing with it. But she seems to get over it pretty fast. Of course they are both contestants in the competition.

This is a slightly below average attempt for me. It's unfortunate, because I really like both actors a whole bunch, but the chemistry is non-existent. Oh well, can't win 'em all.

Writer needed to do his research.
cherylnorman2126 March 2024
I grew up a tomboy and automobile enthusiast. I love stories about female mechanics and restorers, but I expect them to be accurate. For instance, a 1954 Chevy should have a 235 cid inline six cylinder engine. Chevy didn't sell a V-8 until 1955. A 1947-8 Plymouth had a generator, not an alternator. These mistakes occur early on, which distracted me from the romance plot, and were hers. Was it sloppy writing or thinly disguised sexism?

There was humor to balance the tension, and a cute roller skating dance routine. The actors performed their characters well. Too bad the research didn't support the script. Having said that, I still recommend the movie. Just forgive the inaccuracies.

OK rom com with 2 oddities ....
A_Different_Drummer31 March 2024
In my over 2000+ reviews here (ouch,) I have repeatedly discussed the Great Canadian X-Mas Movie Factory, and the Great Canadian Rom Com Machine. Canada's film sector was jump-started decades ago based on changes to their tax code. Who would have imagined that, half a century later, their film output is best known for Santa Claus and soap operas? This one checks all the boxes, the dialog is adequate, and the story is predictable but pleasant. The two oddities are ... (1) viewers checking out the film because of the car angle will be disappointed. Most of if not all of the technical bits are complete nonsense. Memo to producers -- next time, spend $20 on a technical script consultant. And (2) Canadian Tyler Hynes has an edge to his acting which he keeps well hidden because his agent has him doing mainly rom-coms. But one gets the feeling there is an action hero hiding in there somewhere, something he should explore when possible. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." The Restoration Of Love
atlasmb7 April 2024
As the title suggests, this Hallmark romance has an automotive theme. Luke (Tyler Hynes) and Jess (Katherine Barrell) work on cars for competing garages. The two of them have a romantic history, but Jess now prefers cars over men, because they never disappoint. Emotions between them are further complicated by the fact that the two garages, owned by their fathers, also have a deep history.

The chemistry between the two leads is not off the charts, but the story really leans into the auto restoration contest that Luke and Jess enter. And Jess's father really needs the prize money to bail their garage out of existential financial problems. Still, as the contest goes on, old feelings are reignited, and Jess begins to allow Luke into her heart.

As always in a Hallmark film, a conflict arises in the eleventh hour, throwing a wrench into their love affair. But the viewer knows that love will overcome in the world where romance wears the crown.

In the final minutes, there is a resolution that promises not just a reconciliation, but also a brighter future. Even grease monkeys deserve love in Hallmark land.

Expected more..
lalefilmer24 March 2024
Sorry to say that the film was not what i hoped.... Like " An unexpected christmas" or "Time for him to come home" and some other Tyler Hynes movies, that pulls you in make you feel whatever they are feeling makes you want to watch again and again, you laugh and cry with them. That what makes you want to watch a film.

The story far from capturing you, you feel left out, the male wardrobe was very poor, if you go back and check the old films you will see the balance and tasty combinations. Between the actors difficult to feel the electricity. I am not an expert but i watch with my being all the films. Film must have a soul if not, actors cannot do a lot. I like both the actors but because i like them cannot say that i like the film.

Hope to see Tyler Hynes in better written screenplays, scripts he can act that we know.

Different job & cross-generational
SunnyDaise27 April 2024
Obviously there are a few of the usual TV romcom clichés, but I like the different job setting and how the story spans four generations of the community. There's nothing super special yet it was a much-needed feel-good, comforting movie for us after a tricky week. We watched it for the different career element, not realising favourites like Tyler Hynes an Kristin Booth are in the cast, which is a bonus. The full-on loud music at the start doesn't occur much in the actual movie, so it is relatively calming, despite the different conflicts. I'm not especially into cars, but I would watch this as a reality show series as it is good to see practical skills being passed on and things being restored.

Not good
jroyals-0434125 March 2024
The leads were not a good match and had no chemistry. The female lead was not even likeable, much less appealing. I didn't buy their relationship for a second and am not sure why she was cast in that role. When they were skating they looked silly. I think that Julie Gonzalo would have been a much better choice as she and Tyler Hynes have great chemistry together. I also didn't buy the guy playing Tyler Hyne's father. The get to know you segment on the tv show was super cringey even for a Hallmark movie. I actually think just about any other female in the Hallmark universe would have been a better fit for the female lead than the one they cast.

Very Poor Writing
SheaCoco22 April 2024
I have seen way better movies than this one. The last five minutes was the best of the whole movie. I was greatly disappointed that I wasted my time on this one. In my opinion Tyler Hynes hasn't played in a good movie in a while. The story was choppy and sloppy.

There was no chemistry with Tyler and Katherine in the movie, perhaps because there was basically no story line.

As far as the restoring of cars, well that was choppy and just plain silly in my opinion.

I think Hallmark could do a whole lot better. Get new writers if this is the best you can do.

I think the writers on this story got an F.

Had potential, but fell flat
jenrn-0972221 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This had potential, with a female mechanic and ex boyfriend mechanic-turned-business exec. It started out well - loved the shots of Detroit - but not sure where this was supposed to take place because it certainly wasn't anywhere in Michigan.

It was disappointing because I couldn't get invested in either lead character. There simply was not enough back story in the beginning to get me invested in their history together or in either one of them. Tyler Hines is probably my favorite Hallmark player - he can make even the worst actress look good, but some of his characters as of late, have been awful. He has been playing too many of these passive overly sensitive, self-doubting characters lately. Katherine Barrel's character was just as insecure and self-doubting. By the time they each goiter it together at rhe end, I was just waiting to see how it ended.

Jess kept telling Luke she couldn't do the car competition without him, but there was so little interaction between them during the actual competition, that I couldn't figure out what she needed him for. They worked together in the second round of competition for a 5-minute scene, then he "accidently" messed up the paint job on the car she was working on in the finale - she certainly didn't need him to help with that. All their interactions otherwise were chance meetings and an occasional walk down memory lane - which those could have helped to move the relationship forward, but felt like filler. They were meant to show a history between the two characters, but were so random that I found them confusing and not very helpful to the plot. Even their big conversation about past dating experiences was so superficial and vague that we learned nothing about either one of them and it does nothing to forward the plot. There was no development of the other characters either.

I felt this story had bland characters, they didn't have much chemistry together, and the story dragged. There should have been a lot more focus and time spent on the competition and more scenes of them actually working together. When the shows host says they make a good team, I couldn't figure out how he came to that conclusion from one 5-minute round where they fixed some headlights - and they didn't even do it "together". For the fact the car competition takes up 2/3 of the show there was little showing of the classic cars, little showing of the competition, and little showing of the actual restorations. I would have liked a full 360 view of her amazing paint job that won her the competition at the end - all we got was a quick glance at one quarter panel.

This was a one-time watch for me. I hope next time Hallmark does a car-focused plot, that there is a focus on some of the cars and some character development to get me invested.
