Karen mentioned a ship by the name of the SS Minnow. The Minnow was a pleasure craft that was caught in a storm and ended up on an uncharted desert isle in Gilligan's Island (1964).

- Airport (1970) - airline bomber and snowstorm converge at airport, starring Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin
- Meteor (1979) - extraterrestrial object in a collision course to Earth, starring Sean Connery and Natalie Wood
- City on Fire (1979) - oil refinery explosion engulfs an entire city
- The China Syndrome (1979) - meltdown of nuclear reactor at a power plant, starring Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon, and Michael Douglas. Less than two weeks after the film's release a partial meltdown of a reactor took place at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania

It was a remake of The Last Man on Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price which in turn is a film treatment of the novel "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson. The latest one, I Am Legend (2007) starred Will Smith.
