With relatively few jobs for women in the American West the role of saloon girl was particularly attractive. A woman could define her own job ranging form serving drinks to prostitution. But most were expected to encourage business in their saloons by selling drinks, dances and songs, by consuming (non-alcoholic) drinks bought for them by men and by generally being friendly and attractive.
