- The power of doppelgangers.... While Elena and Damon try to explain Amara's situation to Stefan, Dr. Wes Maxfield gives Katherine some deeply disturbing news. Nadia shows up at Caroline's dorm room searching for Katherine. After a surprising conversation with Amara, Jeremy and Bonnie share a glimmer of hope. Silas fails to keep a promise, causing Damon to turn to Tessa for help with his new plan, and Stefan makes a heartbreaking confession to Damon and Elena.—Anonymous
- Silas struck a deal with the brothers to eliminate the anchor and allow Bonnie to return, but finds it's his beloved Amara, whom Damon had to lock up, seemingly mad. Dr. Wes Maxfield diagnoses Katherine's weakening health as proof that her mortality escalates in fast-fatal aging. Katherine refuses to have anything to do with Traveler Nadia, her daughter. Tessa restores Stefan's memory, yet his personality and devotion don't just regenerate as hoped. She promises to save the other dimension by transferring -using three doppelgangers' combined power- the anchor role to the late Bonnie, who finds out its price only afterward. A series of deals and betrayals leads to the death of Silas and his rival lovers.—KGF Vissers
- Silas unburdens himself of his romantic woes to a couple at a bus stop. "Just a couple days ago, I was psychic, I was immortal, I was in love. Now my neck hurts, my soul is crushed, I'm sitting in a bus stop in friggin' Delaware," Silas says. "You're in Philly," says the woman. The man doubles over in pain. Silas freely confesses he's liquefying his organs because he's mad at the world. When he tells the woman she might be his next victim, she runs off. Silas bemoans the fickleness of love as he helps the man up. The bus comes.
Stefan thrashes in bed, as bits of his memories come back. Elena wakes him up with coffee, saying she misses him. She wants to start fresh with him to rebuild their friendship. But he tells her his memories are back. Elena is thrilled.
Later, Damon quizzes Stefan to see what he remembers. Stefan tells them getting his memories back wasn't all good -- he remembers repeatedly drowning in the safe. He remembers the bald man who opened the safe, and crushes his coffee cup.
Stefan hears a banging and they explain they have a doppelganger situation. Down in the cellar, Amara is shouting at no one that she doesn't know. Damon explains they have to keep her mortal heart beating until Silas can do the spell to release Bonnie from the other side. But they're waiting for Silas to show up.
Jeremy sits down with Bonnie with three things to tell her: the first is that he thinks no matter what happens, she'll be around somehow, the second is to thank her for giving her life for him. She prevents him from telling her the third, with the idea that it means there will be a next time.
Dr. Maxfield gives Katherine the results of the tests he ran on her: She's aging. Her 500 years of living are catching up with her. There's no way to stop it, she probably has a few months.
Silas finally answers when Damon calls. Silas has decided that Amara needs to die. He's also decided that he would enjoy messing with Damon's relationship with Stefan, to prove that dopplegangers belong together, and just to mess with him, so he's not going to help him with Bonnie after all.
At college, Caroline leaves Jesse yet another voice mail, worried about him. Nadia shows up, looking for Katherine. When Katherine finds her, she lies about who Nadia is.
Stefan, Damon and Elena try to figure out what to do about Silas. Stefan thinks Silas needs to die, but Elena is holding out hope he'll help them.
Down in the cellar, Amara tries to get out of her bonds. Jeremy brings her a sandwich. Amara recognizes him as the hunter Silas killed. Amara can see Bonnie because she's the anchor to the other side. Bonnie discovers she can touch her. She has an idea.
They realize Amara isn't crazy, she's constantly seeing dead people.
Upstairs, Jeremy suggests they could try turning Bonnie into the anchor. All they need is someone who wants Amara to die.
Damon goes to see Tessa.
Back at the house, Elena tries to talk Stefan out of killing Silas. He tells her about the pain of slowly losing his humanity in the safe as he drowned over and over again. He needs to make that pain end by killing Silas, so he doesn't lose his humanity.
Damon lays out his anchor swap idea to Tessa. She would need a massive amount of power to draw. She suggests dopplegangers.
Nadia tries to connect with Katherine, accusing her of abandoning her. Katherine isn't feeling motherly. Caroline interrupts, saying that Katherine's doppelganger blood is needed.
Damon brings Tessa to the mansion.
Tessa goes down to the cellar to taunt Amara, who begs her to kill her. Amara promises she will, just as soon as she makes someone else the anchor. Then with Amara as a human, she'll pass on and Silas the supernatural being will be stuck on the other side and they'll spend eternity apart.
Katherine arrives and lays out her terms to Tessa; she wants her to stop her rapid aging. Tessa agrees.
Later, Tessa prepares to do the spell, using Bonnie's grimoire as a talisman and with the three dopplegangers: Katherine, Amara, and Elena.
Tessa takes blood from each of their hands and lets it drip on the grimoire. She begins her spell and the blood forms a symbol, but Tessa can sense something is wrong. The lights blow out and Tessa yells at Silas to show himself.
The electricity blows out in the whole house. Damon comes in and realizes Amara and Tessa are missing.
Tessa finds Stefan. They fling angry words and glasses at each other. Silas skewers her with a fire poker, mocking her.
Stefan calls Silas, telling him he has Amara and he's going to take her and keep her alive if he doesn't come find them.
Caroline finds Katherine, whose hand won't stop bleeding. Caroline tries to feed Katherine her blood to heal her, but it just makes Katherine gag.
Elena finds Tessa and yanks the poker from her arm, assuring her it's just a flesh wound.
Silas finds Amara in the woods. She tells him she loves him, but she can't live any longer. He says he understands and takes out a knife. He holds it to her throat. He's trying to bring himself to kill her, when Stefan grabs him and throws him against a tree, strangling him.
But Silas uses his witch powers to bring Stefan to his knees. But as Silas taunts him, Stefan gets his knife and jams it in Silas's chest.
In the house, Tessa begins her spell again.
Elena begs Damon to go find Stefan before he gets hurt taking on Stefan.
In the woods, Amara watches Silas die and tells him their eternity starts now. She picks up the knife and stabs herself as Damon finds her. He tries to feed her his blood and begs her to hold on.
Tessa continues the spell.
Bonnie comes to Jeremy and tells him that Amara is dying and she's come to say good-bye. She asks him the third thing, he says he loves her. He reaches out to touch her -- and touches her. Elena and Caroline come in and see Bonnie. They can see her. They have a happy, squeally reunion.
Later, Bonnie enjoys being alive again, including the warmth of the fire and kissing Jeremy.
Katherine goes to see Tessa, wanting her spell to stop her aging. But Amara says that altering someone's lifespan is what got her into this mess in the first place. "I won. Amara is gone. And Silas is waiting for me on the other side," she says.
Katherine walks around in front of Tessa and sees blood pooling at her feet, her wrists slashed open with glass. "True love prevails, the universe be damned," Tessa says.
She dies, then appears by Bonnie. Since Bonnie is the anchor now, she's going to feel the death of every supernatural being as they pass through. "Sorry, that's going to hurt like a bitch," Tessa says. Bonnie screams in pain.
Out in the woods, Elena checks on Stefan. She tells him how guilty she feels about having the summer of her life while he suffered. He confesses that when the safe opened and someone finally found him, he wanted it to be Damon and Elena.
Katherine goes to get her things from Caroline's room. Nadia finds her and invites her to come back to Bulgaria with her. Caroline hears her says she would rather rip her own heart out than do more mother-daughter bonding. Katherine takes her things and leaves.
In the woods, Stefan buries Silas and, he hopes, his demons along with him. Instead, the memories continue to come flooding back, sending Stefan to his knees.
