- A couple, Mallory and Frank, runs out frankly from their house. The woman wants to stay, but the man forces her to get on the car. At a given point, she makes the car overturn because she wants to get back to the house. Eight months later, the couple is leaving isolated in the countryside and the man is now in a wheelchair.
After Mallory meets the Coopers and their little son, Nathan, the ones who are renting them the house, she enters the house and in the kitchen she sees all the furniture open, even the higher ones. It is clear that they have been experiencing these phenomena a while because she closes all the doors, and she does not want her husband to notice.
They continue to experiencing strange phenomena, as for example, a glove she throws in the water at the beginning of the movie reappears, noises, shadows through the window at plain daylight, etc. Then the Coopers reappear asking for Nathan, he is missing for a while, but Frank and Mallory did not see him. Later, Molly and Frank are taking a walk through the woods, and they find the dead body of Nathan, she tries to perform reanimation, but he is already dead. In a flashback, she tried the same on her son, and it is assumed that he is dead. Fearing that they will be blame because of what happened to their son, they decide to hide the body and go back to the house.
Later that night they wake up again hearing noises, and they fall asleep as the noises do not stop. The next morning they go to a restaurant, and they meet Eleanor, who is a woman that performs readings in a ghost hunters like TV show. She is reticent at the beginning, but in the end she accedes to perform a reading with analog instruments in the house they are renting to the Coopers. After performing the reading, Eleanor asks them if there is something they are not telling her.
Later while they are dining an analog instrument starts detecting something and Eleanor tells Mallory that since she has met her a word comes to her mind over and over, when Mallory ask what word, Eleanor says: "run". Late at night, the girls are talking outside and Eleanor tells Mallory that Frank has a different energy, but also that it is not that simple to say if it is good or bad. Then they hear some noises in a storage cabin next to them, but they can not find anything special. When they come back to the cabin, Eleanor starts recording everything with a camera, and they prepare to go to bed.
Mallory, Frank, and Eleanor sleep together in the same room, and it is revealed that indeed, all the phenomena has been following them from house to house since they had the accident. It is also revealed that their son Danny died doing strange noises, and he had black eyes before attacking her mother. Frank was blamed, but Mallory does not think he could have done something to their child. At this very moment Eleanor gets up because they hear something and the noises start again all over the house along with flickering lights. Eleanor goes out, and she comes inside minutes later with bruises on her ankles. She is in shocked and starts screaming as she points Frank with her finger.
The next day, Eleanor is packing her stuff and tells Frank, while Mallory is still asleep, that the bad thing is yet to come, and she wants to leave before. All of a sudden, Frank confesses to her that he killed Danny, but Mallory does not know about it. As previously said, the child attacked her mother, then she went to look for help with Frank, who entered the room and strangled the boy. Frank adds that he did it to prevent the thing that made Danny's eyes turn black to do it again. Eleanor comes to the conclusion that whatever it is there needs something to manipulate our world: heat, cold or in this case strong emotions.
Later in the morning, Eleanor and Mallory take a walk while Frank stays at home. Frank gets pushed by something so strong that he gets out of the wheelchair and the house. At the same moment, Mallory and Eleanor arrive to the spot where Mallory and Frank found Nathan's body, but it is not there. After detecting some energy with her instruments, Eleanor insists again if there is something she needs to tell her. Then Mallory tells her about Nathan. When Eleanor is about to leave, something pushes them as well to the floor, and they come back to the house running. They end throwing themselves in the water, and it seems that the water stops the presence of interfering with them.
Once in the house, Eleanor explains her theory; she thinks Danny is scared and frustrated and as sometimes normal people get angry he does it too and that everything that is happening it is not intentional, he is just a child. She decides to make a ritual to help Danny cross over, but before they decide to speak with the Coopers about Nathan. They arrive to their home, but they find them dead on their bed. Under the bed it is the dead body of Nathan.
Back at the house, they perform the ritual to help Danny cross over and stop the incidents. Later that night, while Frank and Mallory are making love, it seems that Eleanor is being rape alone in her room by a presence it can not be seen. Later, Eleanor thinks that they made a mistake sending Danny away because he was not causing the incidents, but instead he was protecting his parents from the presence causing them. They decide to end the occurrences that night, but before, Eleanor tells them that one of them is possessed without being conscious. Although, she can not tell which one of them, and they have to figure it out which one.
Moments later they start a ritual where Eleanor gets possessed and speaks with scary voices that say "save me please" in various languages. They hold hands after that and the lights go out. After seconds of darkness and silence, Mallory takes the camera and checks for Eleanor, but she can not see Frank. As she continues to look for Frank, he encounters him at the end of a corridor, standing still, and over his two feet. Seconds after and all of a sudden, he starts running to her and strangles her. He stops but starts again and drag Mallory through the floor. At a given moment, Frank implies that she needs to kill him while he is possessed, so they can get rid of the presence.
On the last sequence of events, she remembers that time Eleanor and her run into the water and stopped the presence from interfering with them. So she decides with the help of the wheelchair to throw Frank into the water. He calls for her immediately and when they meet they start kissing, but Frank tells her "I love you" and he goes under the water while Mallory screams "no". She helps him to float, but then suddenly Frank starts to strangle her again, so she decides to drown him while he is still trying to strangle her. Then, on the last scene she let herself float, screen fade to black and the final credits appear.
