Writer/director Jason Bognacki has been impressing us with his work for a number of years, most recently with the neo-giallo Another (trailer). For a follow-up, Bognacki has turned his sights to a short film project which will be making its world debut at Fantasia.

Later tonight at the 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival, co-writer/director Norbert Keil will be able to celebrate the long journey to completion for his latest project, Replace, as the genre-bending horror film is set for its world premiere as part of the fest’s Nightfall programming.
Yesterday, Daily Dead sat down with Keil, as well as with Replace co-stars Rebecca Forsythe and genre legend Barbara Crampton, to discuss their wholly unique collaboration that left this writer continually guessing until the very end. During the interview, Keil chatted about how his own fears inspired the film and both actresses offered up their thoughts on being a part of this very female-driven cinematic story. The trio also chatted about how Replace affected them, both personally and professionally, and much more.

One actor recalls reading the script, putting it down and then uttering aloud, "Hell no." Another said that he called the director and asked him, point blank: "What the fuck is this? Are you making a porno, man?" At its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this past January, both the filmmaker and his leading man hastily ran out of their in-progress screening to stress-vomit, while a fellow cast member declared that "the first time I saw, I was appalled."

Canadian production house Black Fawn Films continues to develop indie horror features. Recently, they have completed: Bite (2015), Antisocial 2 (2015), The Sublet (2015) and Bed of the Dead (2016). Their latest is titled Let Her Out. This feature deals with a young women, who has a twin growing inside her. Similar in story to Jason Bognacki's Another (2014), this "vanishing twin" turns Helen's (Alanna LeVierge) life into a living hell. The first trailer for the film has been released and fans of indie horror can find it here. For more on the story, Helen suffers a traumatic accident. This accident causes blackouts and strange behaviour. Helen becomes unhinged as a tumour begins to ascend in power. And, she must find a way to free herself of this disturbing manifestation. Black Fawn Films is one of the busiest production houses in the country. While an early screener of Bed of the Dead did not wow this critic,...

In the name of all that is blasphemous, satanic and unholy, what in Satan’s asshole did I just watch?
Mark Of The Witch is an ambitious mess of hackneyed gimmicks that might have been salvageable with a proper budget, not just writer/director Jason Bognacki’s can-do attitude. I’m all for filmmakers going rogue and shooting original content, but only within their pre-determined means. Bognacki’s style is marred by atrocious CGI and incoherent storytelling, all of which try to skirt by on the presumption that arthouse pretension trumps any semblance of a worthwhile narrative. And you know what? Maybe it would have without all the fluctuating audio levels, fish-eye lensing and inexcusable animated misfires.
Maybe.
Bognacki opens on robed cultists (presumably witches) who are holding a baby, before transitioning into an overhead shot of a birthday cake that reads the name “Jordyn” (Paulie Rojas). As the happy post-teen celebrates another year,...

There’s a joke in Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, the under-seen but superlative comedy about the making of a fictional eighties horror programme, that is too good not to repeat at any given opportunity. In it, the show’s producer, played by Richard Ayoade, claims that due to episodes running far too short, any scene without dialogue was considered for slow motion. Given its own brief running time of just eighty minutes and its predilection for the special effect, one wonders if Mark of the Witch was produced under a similar ethos.
Mark of the Witch portrays Jordyn (Ana Paula Redding), a young woman who keeps having weird and wacky experiences of a not entirely pleasant nature. Turns out, she’s being harassed/possessed by a demonic presence. There’s not...

Another Bleeding Love Story, the quirky serial killer love story that Jesus approves of, started production in Baltimore, MD, in early January. A joint production between Austin Sheeley and MOnsterworks66’s Maria Olsen, this horrifically hilarious tale follows two young serial killers, Lily and Lucas, as they negotiate the arduous tasks of living and killing in modern society.
Lucas, played by Sheeley, is a Mommy’s Boy with Mommy Issues thanks to, and this isn’t a wild guess, his mommy, Catherine (Olsen Starry Eyes, Another, Vile, The Haunting of Whaley House). Now he’s decided to take his issues out on every middle aged woman he can get his hands – and his knife – on, but everything’s ok as Jesus has literally given him the “thumbs up” for the killings.
While divinely inspired to rid the world of these women, Lucas encounters Lily, a sociopathic teacher, whose main goal...

When I wrote a review for Dtb about director Jason Bognacki’s 2014 Giallo inspired witchcraft film “Another” I said that the film was “poised to be a future-classic”. It turns out I wasn’t wrong. Since the film started screening in festivals worldwide, it has garnered many well-deserved accolades along the way. In fact the UK publication the Daily Record even included Another in their year end list of top-ten horror movies and presented an excellent point about the mesmerizing film while doing so saying that you “don’t expect” to like Another. *full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by director Jason Bognacki and Full Frame Features. Bognacki and this writer have worked together in the past. Director/writer: Jason Bognacki. Cast: David Landry, Maria Olsen, Lillian Pennypacker and Paulie Redding. Another is the first feature film from director Jason Bognacki ("The Red Door"). This film has played at several film festivals, recently and the reception has been mostly positive. The film can best be described as a Giallo-themed thriller, with a few gothic elements added in. Bognacki's first feature is light on story, with the director focusing more on the visual display. In the film, two immortals fight over the souls of the living; there is no clear winner. Shot on 4K digital with the Red One camera, the visuals of Another will stay with the viewer, long after the curtains have fallen. The story begins with a coven of witches.

The theme for this year’s Melbourne Underground Film Festival is “Evolve Or Die,” so thank God that after 15 years, the fest has decided to evolve rather than kick the proverbial bucket.
What does “evolution” look like for Muff? For starters, this year is a much more stripped down festival. It runs Sept. 12 – 19 at a single location — The Backlot Studios.
Muff usually features a healthy retrospective section, but they decided to spin that off into a separate event that will run in a month or two. Instead, Muff 15 is all about new cinema, with an even stronger focus on Down Under cinema.
Opening Night: Start Options Exit was originally conceived by local co-directors Chris Mitchell and Yoav Lester as a web series, but was subsequently edited together as this outrageous comedy about a pair of degenerates stumbling through the seedy underbelly of Melbourne.
Closing Night: Acclaimed Melbourne cult filmmaker Stuart Simpson...

This is all kicked off when her Aunt Ruth...

The supernatural horror short was one of several stylish, sexy and often intensely disturbing films Bognacki is releasing through his production company Full Frame Features, along with his acclaimed mini-feature The Red Door. Another stars Paulie Rojas (The Last Resort) as a young woman who must fight for possession of her soul after learning of her demonic heritage. She co-stars with Maria Olsen (Paranormal Activity 3), Nancy Wolfe (Helter Skelter) and Michael St. Michaels (The Video Dead). A release date has not yet been announced, but the new trailer is amazing, so I'm hoping we won't have to wait much longer. ...
