Unwanted, yet exciting adventure for Claire
masc85-193-1151227 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
It's a very intriguing story line. The way it's presented in the pilot makes you want to know more about what happens next. Excellent work on the adapted screenplay; it feels like reading an enjoyable book. Most of the characters seem to be ordinary people, and their personalities are very simple; yet you get quite fond of them as their stories develop, and the way they're interacting becomes more and more of an interesting detail. I loved the wardrobe and general design for the 1940's period and Druids ritual. I cannot say the same thing about the Scottish XVIII century design in overall, since it's not as appreciable in this particular episode. I loved the fact that Claire's XX century husband is a historian, and that this helped her get around the events in the XVIII century battles. Also that she proves to be valuable to the Scottish men, having been a WWII battle camp nurse. I'd like to see how being a botanist too will help her in this scary exciting adventure.

I'm in love!

I knew I'd love this story from the second i saw the very first moments. Everything was perfect from the narration, the lead actress, the cinematography, the camera angles and the sets. I was intrigued by the unique story and as the episode went on i felt like i knew these people. The characters were instantly likeable and relatable, the country views were beautiful. i really felt as if i had sat down at the kitchen table and my grandmother was telling me of an old adventure from her youth. Instantly i was hooked and i knew a great tale lay ahead! I binged watched the whole season and was left nearly gasping for more!!

Challenge fulfilled

I was really intrigued about this first episode, being a fan of the books for some years now. And it fulfilled completely my expectations about how would the story begin and attract both fans and new viewers. The producers did a great job (I recommend listening to Ron Moore's pod-cast about the episode): spectacular Scottish locations, great period recreation, fabulous costumes and music and perfect cast. This is the beginning of a story about human relationships. It is out of the ordinary, complex and subtle. I'm not happy with those plots summaries that are everywhere, full of common-place comments usually extracted from somewhere else. Nor I agree with those endless comparisons to Game of Thrones or, even less, to 50 Shades, just because there's action, intrigue, betrayal, passion or love in the story. There's so much more and it will develop through the season. The book is not a page turner and the series isn't either. This first episode takes its' time in introducing the story and it does it very well indeed. Congratulations!

Gripping

I found Outlander via Amazon after it aired but was captured from the very first episode. The characters were engaging and great chemistry between Claire(Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan). Tobias Menzies portrayal of Frank/Blackjack was inspired.

After watching the first episode I bought the books and started reading them as I really wanted to compare both.

Both are great and the producers, writers, costume designers have excelled themselves.

Filming in Scotland brought authenticity to the show and it was great to see the country that I love shown in all its glory.

Love this series...worth watching
tlproux17 September 2014
This series has, so far, exceeded any expectations I had. I love the books and Ronald Moore has done an excellent job of bringing this story to the small screen (actually my screen is not so small). This series does a superb job of complementing the books. I look forward to the next 10 episodes (yes, I realize eight of them will be next year). Kudos to the cast and crew for a job very well done. Sam Heughan is well cast as Jamie as Catriona Balfe is as Claire. I look forward to continuing to watch their on screen relationship develop...they already display good chemistry. Tobias Menzies...what can I say, the man deserves an Emmy already. His portrayal of two such different characters is phenomenal. Graham McTavish is doing a wonderful job in his portrayal of Dougal as well.

A fantastic and high quality pilot episode that makes you want more! The cinematography is fantastic, the characters already seem multi-layered and interesting and the monologue and dialogues are very well written!

Very promising

The pilot episode is full of great promises. It has a few shocking moments and creates the mystery and mysticism that drags you in. Excellent idea with the voice-over, very helpful to connect with the screen - voice is a magnet, well paced with clear pronunciation. Lead character (Claire) has interesting acting, she is also the voice-over, her face acting is very suggesting. All in all, I got that strange feeling that something marvelous lies ahead - something I rarely feel on TV.

An excellent production. My wife and myself are in love with this. We have not read any of the books so perhaps our reviews won't have the angle of those who have. By the way Sassenach is slang for a British person.

The first episode of Outlander focuses on Claire Randall. A nurse dealing with the wounded of World War 2 and then it is announced the war has ended.

Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and her husband Frank (Tobias Menzies) have been reunited after just seeing each other just a few times during the war. He was in military intelligence and is about to start a post as history professor at Oxford University.

They are visiting the Highlands of Scotland to reconnect. It also allows Frank to look into his family history while Claire can develop her interest in botany.

They watch an ancient druid ritual in Halloween taking place at a stone circle. Later on Claire finds herself cast backwards through time, to the Scotland of 1743.

It is the time of the Jacobite rebellions. Claire at first things she has ended up in a film set. Then she sees a man who looks like her husband but dressed as a royalist soldier who tries to rape her.

She is then rescued by Jamie Fraser, an injured rebel. Claire fixes his injured arm, later as she rides with his group, she heals his wounds after he has been shot.

We see Claire enjoy sexual relations with her husband in an old castle they visited. It is obvious Claire will have a relationship with rugged Jamie.

There is certainly an element of 'we are not in Kansas' anymore. Claire has been taken to her own land of Oz where she is the outsider. She uses her modern knowledge, medical skills and information gleaned from her historian husband to help out the rebels. Claire knows her journey is yet to begin.

This was a beautifully filmed pilot episode with marvellous shots of the Highlands. Claire is a strong and sexual character. Menzies brings sensitivity as Frank and hams it up as his malevolent ancestor, Black Jack Randall.

Great if it wasn't for the female lead
taylorjan-6396230 June 2017
Loved the books and was looking forward to this TV series.

Would have been a higher score if it wasn't for the main female lead. She obviously isn't English and this affects her acting. And that voice! The clipped tones with each word ending deliberately pronounced....'he'll cuT your throaT. Serves you righT', 'kidpappeD, rapeD' I can't bear it, it's too much. Sorry although I want to watch it, her appalling acting, and accent is too much. An English actress would have been more natural.

Could try with sound off and subtitles I suppose.

The scenery is fantastic as well as the costumes but this actress is totally miscast.

Disgusting evil filth
lilpest925 May 2022
There is scene in this first episode of this show where they forced a VERY young girl into smoking. Don't know how anyone could finish this episode or watch any more of this after seeing that. It was the poor young actress' only time screen acting, she was probably turned off from it after getting mixed up in this trash.
