A year and a half after Michael K. Williams’ death, the man who sold The Wire star the drugs that killed him has pleaded guilty.
“Irvin Cartagena sold fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight in New York City, feeding addiction and causing tragedy,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York said Wednesday, regarding the the September 5, 2021 transaction in Brooklyn’s South Williamsburg neighborhood. “In doing so, he dealt the fatal dose that killed Michael K. Williams.”
In front U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams earlier in the day, Cartagena pleaded guilty to “one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl analogue, fentanyl, and heroin.” That plea specifically cited the death of Williams as a consequence of Cartagena’s drug slinging. Set to be sentenced later this year, Cartagena, aka “Green Eyes,” faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 40 years on the charges.

“Mass” brings together four grieving mothers and fathers, but two of them are parents of a mass-shooting victim, and the other two are the parents of the shooter. Actor-turned-filmmaker Fran Kranz’s choice of subject matter for his feature debut is certainly timely and provocative, but the emotions are too big and too messily human to fit into the tight box he has constructed to contain them.
World-premiering at Sundance, it’s a film that gives four talented actors lots of meaty material to work through, but Kranz writes himself into a corner where the only way out is via contrivance.
In the meeting room of a church’s basement, Jay (Jason Issacs) and Gail (Martha Plimpton) have come for a face-to-face sit-down with Linda (Ann Dowd) and Richard. Years earlier, Gail and Jay’s son was one of several victims of a school shooting perpetrated by Linda and Richard’s son.

It is comprised of an all-star cast including the likes of Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Wright, Jena Malone, Taylor Schilling, Michael Kenneth Williams, Christian Slater and even Estevez himself as the leading character.
The Public is a terrific cinematic effort from Estevez. Diving deep into a social, political matter that is causing chaos and death all around the Us with little interest from the political world that is ultimately causing it. Estevez’ latest venture is a poignant and compelling premise that examines said social issue with tenderness and heart. Thankfully, Estevez holds back no punches...

Below you’ll see what the first eight months have brought us, including some films seen at festivals as well as early year releases that the precursors will surely forget, sadly. Welcome to July folks. Here’s something fun, which we do every single year right around this time. This article should come as no surprise, as you see me write this around the same point, but time really flies, doesn’t it? We’re officially in the month of July now and have entered into the second half of the year. That of course means one thing…well, it means a lot of things, but here it means one thing specifically: it’s time for my mid year look at the best of the first half! As of the writing of this piece, I’ve seen just over 175 movies so far in 2019, which is a bit more than the normal amount for me, for what that’s worth. It’s going to be a fairly thorough and doesn’t really omit any huge early year releases, so that’s good.

Emilio Estevez juggles many hats for his latest film project The Public, including writing, directing, producing and starring in the lead role of librarian Stuart Goodson. Estevez sat down with The Hollywood Reporter In Studio to discuss his "12-year journey" bringing the story to life, and how the film celebrates "those who don’t see themselves represented onscreen."

Exclusive: Fauda writer Michal Aviram and Harem star Romi Aboulafia have teamed up to write an Israeli drama that will be exec produced by The Affair co-creator Hagai Levi.
The trio are developing female detective thriller The Public, which is being produced by Egg Films’ Ben Giladi, who has worked on American Animals and I, Tonya, with Endeavor Content repping the project internationally.
The Public tells the story of an ex-Hasidic detective who returns to the community she left behind to investigate a mysterious disappearance of a teenage girl – this time as a vigilante investigator disguised as a reconverted Hasidic woman. The story is inspired by an Israeli article that exposed an industry of illegal adoptions within the Hasidic world that spans between Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Brooklyn. The story takes place between Israel and the U.S. and will play out in Hebrew, English and Yiddish.

Welcome back to the weekly box office report! Each and every Sunday, expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. This week, a new hero rises with Shazam!, while another high profile Stephen King adaptation hits in Pet Sematary. Both were expected to lead the way, though the former was the clear favorite to gross the most, over the latter and all other comers. How did the two offerings do, specifically? Let us take a look right now at just that… Soaring up to the top spot this weekend, with a nice haul to boot, was DC’s newest superhero movie Shazam!, which charmed audiences in a big way. $53.4 million worth of charm, to be exact. With strong buzz and positive word of mouth, this could actually have some decent legs too. Until Avengers: Endgame hits,...

Jesus spoke about feeding the hungry, clothing the poor and housing the homeless, but as Emilio Estevez’s character points out in his new movie “The Public,” he didn’t say anything about “occupy.”
Yet that’s just what happens when a homeless man played by Michael Kenneth Williams decides to “organize” and stage an “occupy Wall Street”-style sit-in in order to get out of the frigid cold.
“The Public” is set inside a public library in downtown Cincinnati on a particularly freezing winter’s night. And while some of the library officials are at odds with the homeless residents and initially reluctant to help them, the simple act of civil disobedience slowly escalates into a stand-off between police and the media.

Celebrated French filmmaker Claire Denis will have her English-language feature debut with High Life, starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche, opening this weekend via A24. Specialty distributors continue to ramp up spring releases, though with a somewhat less-packed slate of newcomers compared with last weekend. Nearly five decades after its recording, Aretha Franklin concert documentary Amazing Grace begins a regular theatrical run via Neon, which picked up the title in December. Amazon Studios is launching multiple-Oscar-nominated British director Mike Leigh’s historical epic Peterloo in select New York and L.A. locations. Greenwich Entertainment, meanwhile, is heading out with Emilio Estevez-directed drama The Public, with Jena Malone, Gabrielle Union, Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater and Estevez.
Also launching in limited release is IFC Films’ horror Western The Wind, in addition to Good Deed drama Storm Boy at AMC Empire in New York and AMC CityWalk in L.A. along with other major cities.

There are not many similarities between Emilio Estevez’s heavily metaphorical “The Public” and Jordan Peele’s “Us.” The former quotes more from “The Grapes of Wrath” instead of “Lost Boys” and is far closer in spirit to a Very Special Episode of “The West Wing” (which it feels like Estevez may have been bingeing) than an epic-sized “Twilight Zone.” But what Estevez and Peele have in common is a disquiet at the state of the nation and a sense that a good part of the citizenry has been done a great injustice.

Emilio Estevez puts his money where his mouth is: More than two decades ago, after headlining some of the most era-defining youth-culture hits of the 1980s — “The Outsiders,” “The Breakfast Club,” “St. Elmo’s Fire” — he left the studios behind and rebranded himself an independent filmmaker.
“My accountant curses that choice — still,” Estevez said. “Like, ‘How we gonna? … You’re 20 years in arrears.’ He doesn’t really sound like that, but it sounds like that to me. I finally just said, ‘I’m not gonna participate in the types of films other people want me to make. I’m gonna make films that matter to me.’” Estevez even went so far as to self-distribute his last movie, “The Way,” starring his father Martin Sheen as a man who walks Spain’s famed pilgrim’s trail, the Camino de Santiago.

It’s the same tragic story. Another unarmed Black man is killed by the police. Another White man takes an arsenal into a school, campus, or place of worship before opening fire on unarmed innocents. The media takes these headlines, packages them together with thoughts and prayers, and uses the ratings to continue peddling their editorializing as news until another such event inevitably occurs yet again. And what do we have to show for it all? Besides a growing anger at the political injustices and vile rhetoric of those with power causing some push back for the media to ultimately dismiss, the answer is complacency. In a world turned flat by the internet, tragedies become commonplace enough to forget. Death becomes the norm and life the surprise.

Emilio Estevez wants you to know that he’s woke. In “The Public,” the director-writer-star tackles addiction, mental illness, global warming and, most of all, homelessness, sermonizing about how social systems fail the least fortunate. But although he means well, the film is a clunky and at times ridiculous affair, taking a situation that might reasonably happen and turning it into something melodramatic and ultimately unbelievable.
“The Public” takes place in Cincinnati and begins with a PSA about a career as a librarian, which requires “a love of books and people.” The subtext is homeless people; afterward, there’s a scene of a group of street dwellers waiting for the public library to open. It’s winter, and Cincinnati is experiencing a brutal cold snap. The library is a warm refuge for those who have nowhere else to go.

Alec Baldwin’s future on “Saturday Night Live” impersonating Donald Trump may be more unclear than that of the actual Trump presidency. Speaking to IndieWire to promote his new film with director Emilio Estevez, “The Public,” the conversation pivoted to his portrayal of the President.
“We’re not doing a David Fincher movie here, or a Soderbergh movie, where we’re gonna etch some finely rendered impersonation of Trump,” Baldwin said, when asked about how his impression has changed in the more than two years he’s been playing Trump. “I made him as two-dimensional as I believe he deserves to be made. And we’ve certainly vulgarized it from time to time, beyond certain limitations. But it’s essentially us repeating back what he says, and just holding up a mirror to what he says and does.”

What’s better than when an under the radar title absolutely blows you away? Unexpected cinematic joys are really the best kind to me. In the case of The Public, I’d been interested in it, due to enjoying actor and filmmaker Emilio Estevez’s last two outings, Bobby and The Way. However, I was not prepared for how hard this was going to hit me. It’s a riveting tale with terrific acting, directing, and writing. You’ll actually laugh and cry, which is hard to pull off. The Public, hitting theaters this week, is something special, ladies and gentlemen. This is the best film of the year so far. Sentimental but never over the top, it’s truly a treat. The film is a drama about what happens on a bitter cold day in downtown Cincinnati. The Public Library is a hub for the homeless, a place where...

Yesterday, a Trailer hit for a film I’d been curious about for a while. It’s called The Public, which marks the latest writing and directing project for Emilio Estevez. His previous outings have been some of the more underrated flicks of the past handful of years, so his was something I’d had my eye on. In fact, just this week I actually got to see it as well, scratching that particular itch. More on that another time, but this Trailer is one worth sharing. You’ll be able to see it at the bottom of this post, but first…some discussion is in order, of course. The movie is a drama centering on a standoff between the homeless and the police, within the walls of a library. The extensive plot description from IMDb is as follows: “In “the public” an unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its...

"They're not coming out of there unless we make them." Universal has released a new official trailer for the indie drama The Public, the latest film written & directed by Emilio Estevez. This played at the Toronto Film Festival and is finally getting a release in April, even though the first trailer debuted more than a year ago. The title is a reference to a public library in Cincinnati. When an Arctic cold freezes the city, a group of homeless people decide to hold an "occupy" movement and camp out in the library. On top of writing and directing, Estevez also stars as one of the managers. The ensemble cast features Jena Malone, Christian Slater, Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling, Gabrielle Union, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jeffrey Wright, Ki Hong Lee, Richard T. Jones, and Jacob Vargas. From the early festival reviews, I've heard this is a very moving, captivating film about modern society,...

The Public is the latest from the mind of Emilio Estevez in a film he writes, directs and also stars in.
You can be forgiven for wincing at this prospect. It is a trifecta of death for a film that more often than not ends badly. On top of that is an amazing cast of Emilio Estevez, Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling, Michael K. Williams, Christian Slater, Jeffrey Wright as well as Jena Malone.
An ad from yesteryear promoting a career as a librarian opens The Public, but we quickly shift to present day Cincinnati with a series of shots of the city showing the problem of homelessness. This issue then links to our main character, Stuart Goodson (Emilio Estevez), who is a librarian at The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County (‘The Public’). The arthouse market in Australia is alive and well but these days in concentrated largely on myriad film festivals, according to Rialto Distribution’s Kelly Rogers.
So Rogers and Lisa Garner, Rialto’s head of film, are aiming to fill a gap in the market for upmarket titles with cross-over potential.
“We’re looking for films and stories that we emotionally connect with and we can see have a clear audience – whatever the genre,” says Garner, who opened the Sydney office in February, taking over from Backlot Films.
“Yes the market is cluttered, but if a film emotionally engages and entertains an audience then the film will find its audience and level.
”As the market shifts and changes we generally buy films based on knowing there’s a strong audience, whether that’s in the theatrical arena or home entertainment or sometimes a film that could go either way.
