It never gets easier to look up the horrors of what real life humans are willing to perpetrate but some of them are harder than others. Looking into the purported Scottish myth that inspired The Hills Have Eyes for example is a whole heck of a lot easier to do than find out the absolutely abysmal crimes that were committed against a young girl in The Girl Next Door. Sadly, today’s movie The Snowtown Murders, a.k.a. Snowtown (watch it Here), is a lot closer to the sickening facts that happened to The Girl Next Door. While Australia already got our notorious spotlight shined on the fictional Mick Taylor who was a composite of two backpack killers, today we will look at the man who is known as the country’s worst serial killer and unpack what he did and who with. The movie is hard to watch...

The gig economy, and the food delivery industry in particular, are set for scrutiny in “Appetite,” an Australian short-form series that will debut next month at Canneseries, the TV festival that runs alongside the Mip-TV rights market (April 14-19).
“Appetite” is a mystery-comedy in which three penniless food delivery riders are brought together after their housemate mysteriously vanishes on the same night as a rider has a fatal roadside accident. They set out to discover the truth behind the accident and expose multinational food behemoth, Appetite.
“Appetite” was created by Mohini Herse (“Hair”) who wrote, directed and produced the series under her Fell Swoop Pictures banner. She worked with fellow writers Neilesh Verma (“Letters Home”) and Grace Tan (“Lucky Peach”), director Neil Sharma (“Heartbreak High”), and producer Karen Radzyner (“Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo”).

The Sundance Film Festival is celebrated as America’s premiere showcase for independent film and a launchpad for up-and-coming filmmakers making deeply personal movies, often on shoestring budgets. But the storied festival is also becoming known for something else: a pipeline for talent into some of Marvel’s biggest superhero films.
From Chloe Zhao (“Eternals”) to Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”), Disney’s Marvel Studios has tapped Sundance talent with notable regularity.
A top dealmaker gave a brutally honest reason for what has become a pattern:
“It’s because they’re young, cheap, and will follow Feige’s rules,” the dealmaker said, referring to Marvel Studios president and keeper of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige.

The Port Arthur shooting of 1996 in Tasmania remains Australia’s deadliest incidents committed by a single person. That’s a horrifying piece of history to take on for a movie, but Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel takes a slanted approach to the material by not showing the actual events, but instead what built to them through the eyes of the perpetrator. In his new film, “Nitram,” Caleb Landry Jones play the protagonist (here named Nitram) in a portrait of a psychopath brewing. Kurzel is naturally the fit for the material, as he has plumbed the depths of the dark side of Australian history before with “True History of the Kelly Gang” and “The Snowtown Murders.” Exclusively on IndieWire, watch the trailer for “Nitram” below.
Caleb Landry Jones has been a go-to for playing feral, gnarly characters, from “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” to the gnashing drug addicts in the Safdies’ “Heaven Knows What...

It wouldn’t be a proper summer movie season without an offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and after a delay of over a year, and two years since the last MCU film, Black Widow is hitting theaters. With potential to be the summer’s biggest film, it is also a test for the box office in the pandemic recovery era, just as F9: The Fast Saga was when it opened two weeks ago. A big Marvel blockbuster may be the push many need to return to theaters, though how the film performs compared to others in the series will help let us know where we stand.

Co-created by Stan Lee, Don Rico & Don Heck, Black Widow made her first appearance in 1964's Tales of Suspense #52, published by Marvel Comics. Introduced as an antagonist for Iron Man, Natasha Romanova was a Russian spy who later defected to the United States, becoming an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a member of the Avengers. In 2010, the character (renamed Natasha Romanoff) made her film debut in John Favreau's Iron Man 2, played by Scarlett Johansson. She has since appeared in six Marvel movies, including 2019's Avengers: Endgame, in which she sacrificed herself so Hawkeye could retrieve the Soul Stone, saving her best friend — and all humankind — from the genocidal warlord Thanos. Now, Natasha is getting her own standalone adventure, a prequel exploring the fan-favorite character's origins in surprising & exciting ways. When it was announced that Cate Shortland was Marvel Studios’ choice to take on “Black Widow,” film fans were pretty shocked. Judging by her previous efforts, including the indie dramas “Lore” and “Berlin Syndrome,” the filmmaker wasn’t an obvious choice to make the leap to blockbuster superhero filmmaking. However, as Marvel Studios has done in the past (with great success), Shortland was given the chance to flex her filmmaking muscles on a $200 million blockbuster.

Cate Shortland couldn’t understand why Marvel Studios wanted her.
Although the Australian filmmaker had been working for over 20 years, there was almost nothing about her career that suggested she was the right fit to direct “Black Widow,” the long awaited solo movie for Scarlett Johansson’s Avenger. Shortland’s three theatrical features — 2004’s “Somersault,” 2012’s “Lore” and 2017’s “Berlin Syndrome” — are all centered around a young woman in harrowing circumstances.
But they barely got a domestic release, and they’re about as far from superhero stories as one could find: deliberately paced, intimately scaled and dedicated to exploring the perilous, ordinary humanity of their protagonists.
So she turned Marvel down — or, at least, she tried to. “I told my manager in L.A., ‘There’s no way I can do this movie, and I’m not sure why they’re asking me. It’s crazy, the whole endeavor,'” Shortland says.

Disney is modifying its theatrical release schedule once again in the face of the coronavirus pandemic by delaying Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” to May 7, 2021. The shift means that other Marvel movies such as “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Eternals” will be moved off their February and May 2021 release dates and pushed back further into the 2021 calendar year. “Shang-Chi” will launch July 9, 2021 and “Eternals” will now debut November 5, 2021. Additionally, “Death on the Nile” is moving from October to December 18, 2020 and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” is delaying a whole year from this December to Dec. 10, 2021.
“Black Widow,” the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry that marks Scarlett Johansson’s final outing as the eponymous hero, was originally scheduled to open in theaters May 1, 2020. Disney shifted the release to November amid the pandemic, and now the “Black Widow” release date has changed for a second time. The film,...

"We have to go back to where it all started... So they never do that to anyone again." Disney + Marvel have released one more official trailer for the upcoming Black Widow movie, still set to kick off the summer on May 1st coming up. It looks like they're sticking with this release date despite delays to other big Hollywood releases. This new stand-alone solo movie is directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland, and is set between the Civil War and Infinity War movies. Romanoff must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Scarlett Johansson stars as Natasha Romanoff, returning from the previous Marvel movies. The cast also includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, David Harbour as Red Guardian, plus William Hurt, Ray Winstone, O-t Fagbenle, and Michelle Lee. Now that the 2020 Oscars are out of the way, cinephiles can get back to focusing on the big stars and major filmmakers gearing up to return to the big screen over the next 11 months. From David Fincher to Spike Lee, Sofia Coppola, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, and more, 2020 is looking incredibly strong when it comes to auteurs helming original visions. Even the tentpoles should be a bit more artistically driven thanks to “The Rider” director Chloé Zhao and “Berlin Syndrome” filmmaker Cate Shortland taking the reigns of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “The Eternals” and “Black Widow,” respectively.
Then there’s the likes of Kogonada, who became one to watch with his debut “Columbus” and now returns with a second, more ambitious and starry follow-up film. And don’t forget about Guillermo del Toro and Charlie Kaufman, two of cinema’s most original and imaginative voices who should have no...

We’re still three months away from “Black Widow,” the first film of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the marketing campaign is already in full swing. We got the first trailer for the prequel film in December, and then a second look in January during the College Football Playoff championship game, and now we have another new look courtesy of the ad that ran during the Super Bowl on Sunday afternoon.
There aren’t many details to glean from this 30-second TV spot, which is action-packed and reemphasizes the family angle that the marketing has been pushing hard since Marvel first showed footage of the film at Comic-Con last summer. But it’s fun to watch the villainous Taskmaster do one of Captain America’s ticks with his shield at the end there. It’s also nice to see David Harbour going full-on grody for a couple shots.

Disney and Marvel have officially begun development on the hotly anticipated “Captain Marvel” follow-up. The 2019 blockbuster starred Brie Larson as ex-u.S. airforce fighter pilot Carol Danvers in the McU’s first solo female superhero movie. “Captain Marvel” earned the studio over one billion dollars in profit worldwide, proving that women can lead major box office successes. According to Deadline, Marvel is eyeing a 2022 release for the sequel, tentatively known as “Captain Marvel 2.”
Marvel has tapped relatively unknown writer Megan McDonnell to pen the screenplay. McDonnell’s only previous credit is the forthcoming Disney+ series “WandaVision,” a brand new McU series starring Paul Bettany, Kat Dennings, Kathryn Hahn, and Marvel regular Elizabeth Olsen.
The first “Captain Marvel” was the 22nd Marvel Studios film and its first with a solo female lead. The blockbuster hit was directed by the writer/director duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Boden and Fleck...

What I love about a new, "special look" at Marvel's Black Widow is that it features three women who have all been recently nominated for Academy Awards, but it doesn't say that Oscar nominees will be kicking butt. Scarlett Johannson, Florence Pugh (Little Women) and Rachel Weisz are joined by David Harbour as one big, Vussian family, fighting crime with their superpowers and what not. Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) directs. Black Widow will be released in U.S. theaters on May 1. Watch the latest video below....

Fans got a closer look at Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” Monday night, courtesy of a new trailer in which Natasha Romanoff squared off against the villain Taskmaster — and a small army of other Black Widows. Watch the clip above.
The new trailer begins similarly to the one that came out in December. We see Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) reuniting for her former comrades in the Soviet Union-era assassin training program that made her who she is. That includes lovable Red Guardian (David Harbour), who might be out of shape but, at least in one quick glimpse, appears to still have quite a kick left in him.
After that, more scenes of general action and mayhem as Natasha fights her way through “new enemies” — which includes the aforementioned squad of other Black Widows. We also get a slightly closer look at Taskmaster, who gives off a serious Winter Soldier vibe while also...

"Natasha, my sister. After all this time - what brings you home?" Disney has revealed a new "Special Look" TV trailer for Marvel Studio's Black Widow movie, kicking off the summer on May 1st. It's good timing as this trailer is also out on the same day as Scarlett Johansson's double Oscar nominations, not to mention Florence Pugh's nomination, too. This new stand-alone solo movie is directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland, and is set between the Civil War and Infinity War movies. David Harbour has opened up about his character Red Guardian in the upcoming film “Black Widow” from Marvel Studios in a new interview with TheWrap.
“He’s this guy who is closely linked to Natasha back in the day. I don’t think it’s been quite revealed exactly how, but I think you can see in the family dynamic that he was a bit of a fatherly figure to her. And a number of years go by and he’s past his prime. So he gets back into his superhero outfit, and it still fits, but it’s a little tighter than before. I think the great thing about the Red Guardian is he really is– he was the Captain America of his day for Russia. And he was the great hope of Russia, in a certain sense,” Harbour said.

The long-overdue Black Widow teases a return to family roots for Natasha Romanoff, as played by Scarlett Johansson. She's joined by Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David Harbour as 'family' members, with William Hurt as well. This teaser video is released as Johansson is receiving well-deserved plaudits for her performance in Marriage Story and Pugh should be receiving acclaim for her remarkable turn in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Little Women. While the action in this trailer looks far too similar to action in every other Marvel movie so far, I have hopes for something different between the action scenes, since Cate Shortland is directing and the plot appears to center on the women in the Marvel universe. It definitely leans more on...

Ten years after making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in “Iron Man 2,” Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is finally getting her long-awaited standalone movie in summer 2020.
Disney has debuted the first trailer for the standalone “Black Widow” movie, and it looks like the kind of hard-hitting action epic McU fans have been waiting for over the last decade. Johansson reprises her McU favorite opposite an ensemble that includes Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, and indie sensation Florence Pugh. A fight between Johansson and Pugh’s characters is teased in the trailer and it looks to be one of the movie’s highlights.
“Black Widow” is directed by Cate Shortland, making it the first McU tentpole to be solo directed by a woman director. The Australian filmmaker is best known for movies such as “Somersault,” “Lore,” and “Berlin Syndrome.” The “Black Widow” script, credited to Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson, is...

Surprise! Without warning, Marvel Studios dropped the first trailer for “Black Widow” at midnight Pacific time, and you can watch it for yourself above.
Per usual for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film’s first trailer, the actual plot of the film is very much obscured, so don’t expect any real details. All we know for sure is that: 1) it’s the first to come out after “Spider-Man: Far From Home”; 2) it’s set immediately after the events of “Captain America: Civil War”; and 3) it follows Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) as she reunites with former members of the (former) Soviet assassin squad she grew up with to defeat an even greater threat.
Oh, and we also 4) know the film takes place well before “Avengers: Endgame,” which is how Natasha is even alive in the first place.

Justin Kurzel and Shaun Grant, the Australian directing and writing team behind “Snowtown” and the recent “True History of the Kelly Gang,” will reunite for a TV series adaptation of “The Narrow Road to the Deep North.” The series is being set up at Fremantle.
The underlying novel by Richard Flanagan, published in 2013, chronicles a century dominated by war, with the forced labor on the Thai-Burma Railway as its dramatic heart. The story is told by an Australian doctor who was taken prisoner during World War II and became an unlikely and uncomfortable hero after the war’s end. The book won the 2014 edition of the Man Booker Prize.
Fremantle’s director of scripted entertainment, Jo Porter, will produce the adaptation as a limited series. Other Fremantle executives involved include Chris Oliver-Taylor, Amy Noble and Nat Lindwall.
“Richard Flanagan’s novel has been hailed as a masterpiece around the world.

Writer-director Justin Kurzel and his Snowtown Murders and The True History Of The Kelly Gang writer collaborator Shaun Grant have boarded Fremantle’s series adaption of Richard Flanagan’s acclaimed novel The Narrow Road To The Deep North.
The Narrow Road to the Deep North, set against the backdrop of the horrific Burma Railway in 1943 and across the Pacific during World War II, charts the cruelty of war, the tenuousness of life and the impossibility of love, as seen through the eyes of an Australian doctor and prisoner of war. Fremantle’s Director of Scripted Jo Porter will produce the limited series.

Back in 1970, Tony Richardson’s “Ned Kelly” hit upon a neat idea: What if you got an honest-to-God rock star, Mick Jagger, to play Australia’s most notorious 19th-century folk hero? A neat idea is all it was, though, and the listless, unconfidently acted movie that resulted was duly forgotten. Nearly half a century later, however, Justin Kurzel’s thrilling new take on the legend gives Kelly some glam-rock swagger without any need for stunt casting. Lithe and volatile and recklessly stylized to the hilt, “True History of the Kelly Gang” has moves like Jagger, but a head still teeming with language and history. Adapted from Peter Carey’s Man Booker-winning 2000 novel, Kurzel’s roughhousing, ripely acted interpretation does full justice to the book’s rugged dirt-poetry vernacular and rich biographical particulars, while staging Kelly’s criminal rise and fall as a vision all its own: a wildly gyrating sensory assault of blood,...

Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel is heading to the Venice Film Festival — as jury president. Variety reports the “Zama” and “La Ciénaga” filmmaker will lead the competition jury at this year’s festival, making her only the seventh woman to hold the position in the lauded festival’s 76-year history. Over the course of the last two decades, the festival has beefed up on its female leadership representatives in the jury pool: in 2017, the jury was led by Annette Bening, while Catherine Deneuve and Gong Li tackled the gig in 2006 and 2002, respectively.
In announcing the presidential pick, festival head Alberto Barbera called Martel “Latin America’s most important female director and one of the top female directors worldwide,” adding that she had achieved such a vaunted status after making just “four feature films and a handful of shorts” over the course of her still-young career.

Marvel Studios has yet to make its upcoming Black Widow standalone movie official, but every fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe knows it’s coming with a cast that includes franchise veteran Scarlett Johansson and newcomers Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, and O-t Fagbenle. Rumors have circulated for some time the Black Widow movie is a prequel, which was all but confirmed by “Avengers: Endgame” considering Johansson’s character sacrificed herself in order to obtain the Soul Stone. Unless the McU plans on bringing Black Widow back to life, then her upcoming film will serve as a prequel much in the same way “Captain Marvel” did.

Note: This article contains major spoilers about the events in “Avengers: Endgame.”
“Avengers: Endgame” brought a definitive end to many characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but as everyone following these movies knows, every ending is really just a new beginning. Marvel’s slate looks busier than ever, but “Endgame” only goes so far in terms of explaining the next steps. Here, we dig through some of the most pressing questions that viewers may have after watching this weekend’s biggest release and what they might mean for the future.
How will these events impact “Spider-Man: Far From Home”?
Though “Endgame” ends with the resurrection of the youngest Avenger, Tom Holland’s darling Peter Parker seems to be (quite understandably!) taking Tony Stark’s death very hard. [Editor’s note: Some mild spoilers ahead for “Avengers: Endgame.”]
By the end of Anthony and Joe Russo’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe was forever altered, at least until this month’s “Avengers: Endgame,” which promises to provide a satisfying conclusion to both the world-changing “snap” that killed off half the known universe and end the franchise’s so-called Infinity Saga. While both Disney and Marvel have remained predictably mum on what’s to come for the McU after the Avengers-centric series presumably concludes, they’ve been unable to avoid setting aside a slew of dates for upcoming features, along with lining up new titles, directors, and casts to kit them out.
Over the coming years, Marvel and Disney have already staked out a number of future release dates for new McU movies, including eight locked-in dates that run from 2020 until 2022 — only one of these, “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” is confirmed for one of these dates.
