Big mistake to do to Jules (Courteney Cox), Ellie (Christa Miller), and Laurie (Busy Philipps): don't promise cronuts if you can't deliver. Andy (Ian Gomez) learned that lesson the hard way. But at least the coffee was good for Jules. It was almost like she was on a sitcom where they drink a lot of coffee. (And this ep was intended to be shown a couple of weeks later, apparently.) Travis (Dan Byrd) wanted to get Laurie a gift but made the rookie mistake of not knowing Laurie's favorite flower, candy, and perfume. Works for Grayson (Josh Hopkins), who was prepared for Jules not liking him acting like a typical male by getting her roses. Or he could graduate to where Andy was, who could sense what Ellie wanted without saying a word. Sadly, Stan (who aged 2 full years since last week's ep) thought of Ellie as the fun one and Andy as the working member of their family. Andy wasn't going to take that lying down; he was going to take Stan to the beach the next day. The good beach: North Gulf Haven. Bobby (Brian Van Holt) joins them and even tosses a towel right on a prime location. The towel that contained the car keys, in which was all the food, chairs, toys, and sunscreen they would need for their day at the beach.
Jules and Grayson were invited to join Travis and Laurie for brunch. Both of them thought with Travis and Laurie being a new couple, there was no way they could pull off a brunch. But of course, this is a sitcom, so Laurie even had her own version of a mimosa, which contains Prosecco. (that's Italian sparkling white wine) And the J and G Travis made in the froth of their lattes (he could make a better letter than Jules could with a pen) and the two options for fresh-squeezed orange juice made them think they might pull it off.
JULES: Laurie made rosemary-plum jam from scratch. The only thing I've ever made from scratch is...Travis.
Jules was concerned that Grayson and she were supposed to be the polished, experienced couple and they never pulled off a brunch like this. She couldn't even get Grayson to top the romantic stories Laurie and Travis were telling. And Jules being Jules, she was not going to take this lying down.
Tom (Bob Clendenin) came over to Ellie's house and told her he found an unfinished book in one of the boxes she sold at the yard sale. A young adult book written by Ellie...sorry, Jocelyn Bradshaw...a few years ago about two siblings who discovered they could travel back in time so they go and uncover the mystery of their past. Ellie wants it never to be mentioned again, but Tom was desperate to find out how the story should have ended. Unfortunately, Ellie never finished it because it was driving her crazy. She stopped drinking and even started being nice to people. (GASP!) Tom was desperate for an ending, so Ellie promised to give him one...in exchange for a computer, some wine, a panini, a cashmere wrap, and her truck filled up with gas. She tried coming up with a good ending, but Tom knew more about what was in the novel than Jocelyn did. (ELLIE: You don't plan to hobble me later, do you?) Thankfully, they figure it out. OK, it'll never get published, but Tom liked how they bonded. Ellie? Not so much. (Don't even get me started on Tom's book club.)
Andy and Bobby weren't having much luck trying to get anyone (Tom hung up on Andy when he tried to call Ellie), but fortunately some people went into the water and foolishly left their picnic basket unattended. But after Stan dug a hole bigger than him to find "buried treasure" and Bobby thought he saw two mermaids in the water who were about to kiss, it was time to call it a day. He admitted to Stan that he lost the keys and they'd have to break a window to get in, but Stan said he could have his keys. As in THE keys. Andy and Bobby were happy, but now they'd have to race Stan back to the car before he broke a window. Fortunately for Stan, Ellie was smart enough to put sunscreen on him before he left, and Stan was kind enough to say what a fun day it was. Uncle Bobby even got to see a mermaid's ta-tas. (ELLIE: And that's why Uncle Bobby lives on a land boat next to a dumpster.)
Jules and Grayson arrived home and immediately set to making dinner for Laurie and Travis. Well, Jules did, as she was the resident nutter. (JULES: Do we have pheasant?) While Grayson went out, Jules made a seafood tower completely by hand. And proceeded to trip and have it all crash to the ground. She was devastated, but Grayson said it didn't matter how good the crème brûlée was that Travis and Laurie made. They only had to make each other happy, not outduel another couple. And both said they were very happy. Travis and Laurie came by and admitted they rehearsed that brunch to the last detail to get everything right. Even the part where Laurie almost clonked Travis on the head with the pitcher of orange juice. (LAURIE: We practiced that, like, 14 times. At one point, his childhood stutter came back and I had to hit him again to get rid of it.) They practiced because they thought nobody would take them seriously as a couple, and all four of them promised to stop trying to impress each other.
