Jonathan Silverman (Josh Galloway) gives a wonderful and memorable performance as the comedian.
When I watched the episode, I prayed that the rape jokes just would be scripted. But I was sure it was true. It is clear from the comments and information.
Frankly, I am from a different country, religion and culture. I said with some nationalism: These are cheap American rape jokes. Of course they did. In fact, it is a subject that should not be within any borders in any culture. But the reality is unfortunately very different: The man accused of killing a young girl in my country was released. Today, the news that his girlfriend was found dead in that man's house was in the headlines. Also; Two separate series of a novel about women's rights were filmed at different times. It was about a gang-raped woman marrying her rapist.
However, the media started a tabloid poll instead of talking about women's rights in these two dramas: "Which actress in these two movies gets raped better!" Unfortunately, my country is not innocent in this regard.
These came to mind when I was listening to comedian Josh Galloway (Jonathan Silverman) jokes. In the show that Svu watches, Olivia's hard gaze, her look at the comedian is the right one. Because comedy makes rape seem like a normal occurrence. It normalizes rape.
However, let's take a closer look at this story in Svu, which reflects inconsistent and contradictory situations so well. While Olivia goes crazy at the jokes, behind her are men and women who applaud wildly. The most dangerous problem here is that the crowd applauds him rather than making those ugly jokes. Let's say you banned the comedian, what about those crowds? Will there not be many ugliness like him in them?
In short, it is not enough to kill flies. It is necessary to dry the swamp. Svu now tries to get to the root of the problems. He tries to ask new questions in this regard.
The writing of the story could have been better. It was predictable. It shouldn't have been like a public warning about the harms of the subject.
I wholeheartedly support Olivia's worldview and Mariska's efforts in this regard. I would also like to say that sometimes I find Mariska's attitude to impose on what it should be.
But I find her right. Because existential issues (human and women's rights, democracy, justice) are not politics. Propaganda is not. Fundamental entitlement. The opposite is the same as supporting rape jokes.
It is also the result of a corrupt mentality that people make jokes about rape and find existential discourses political. But we have a shortcoming in this regard that we cannot tell people.
However, arresting, banning or silencing is not a solution either. These are temporary solutions. Permanent solutions are required.
We can solve this mentality with awareness and education.
I have a solution. It could also be herpes.
In my opinion, a condition should be presented to those who will make jokes about women and rape and publish articles. Someone else should perform or broadcast the same joke about someone they care about, such as their mother or sister. If he approves, let him be. A mixture of soft sharia and tough democracy is a condition.
Because there is a lack of code and a disorder in the minds. This is what we call contradiction. Unfortunately, this situation in the world is official and common in civilian, individual and society. Like those who believe the earth is flat.
I will explain with an example for better understanding. In the story, Olivia tells the girl who wants to be baid herself to the comedian, give up her idea. (Should have) Let's also assume Stabler is still not gone and they are still partners. Stabler took the girl's offer positively, encouraging her to do it. However, if his own daughter wanted to be bait, he'd be all hell. And he vehemently refused. The contradiction is here. Any woman can act like this. Anyone else... We are different for the outside, we are different for the inside (our home). Sometimes we don't even realize the difference at all. Because we accept it as normal. We normalized it.
Olivia is still under the influence of ptsd. However, if I had a boyfriend who liked that comedian's rape jokes, I'd cold his too.
