The heightened security with machine gun armed soldiers and policemen constantly patrolling was intensified after the Manchester Massacre. With a pall over the festival, one minute of silence was observed for the 22 murdered and flags hung at half-mast. In addition to that, the sudden death at 57 of the Busan Film Festival deputy director Kim Ji-seok and that of the James Bond star Roger Moore brought the film world into a new perspective as we join the larger world to face the random indications of human mortality. Employees at a Portuguese elevator factory first panic and finally dance when they get the impression their jobs are on the line in Pedro Pinho’s The Nothing Factory, a grainy, nearly three-hour opus that unexpectedly morphs from vérité-like neorealist drama into that unicorn of cinematic genres: a neorealist musical. This winner of a Fipresci critics prize in Cannes comes not only on the heels of, but also situates itself somewhere between, Marco Martins’ dark, documentary-like austerity drama Saint George and Miguel Gomes’ six-hour Arabian Nights trilogy, which looked at Portugal’s contemporary woes through a phantasmagorical and wildly inventive...

The couple met with the hit man at an Olive Garden in Houston. The plan was to kill her ex-husband in a car-jacking gone awry — while his ex-girlfriend would be kidnapped, and then killed.
They were willing to pay thousands of dollars. There was only one problem: The man they were meeting was actually an undercover police officer.
Valerie McDaniel, 48, and 39-year-old Leon Jacob — reportedly a “prominent” Houston veterinarian and her boyfriend — were charged on Friday with solicitation of capital murder, both accused of hiring the fake hit man to kill their exes.
They face five years-to-life in prison if convicted.

It was early in the development of The Americans that the head of FX told the show’s creator what his series was really about — and was absolutely right. Joe Weisberg had planned to generate drama in the fake marriage between deep cover spies Philip and Elizabeth Jennings on ideological grounds: Philip was beginning to feel too comfortable in America, while Elizabeth stayed true to her Mother Russian roots. (The ideological argument) seemed like a good solid idea for what would create tension in the marriage, but...

Given his relationship with Robert Rodriguez, it may be more surprising that he didn't appear in the first season. However, it has been officially announced that Danny Trejo will be appearing in Season 2 of From Dusk Till Dawn as a new villain known as The Regulator:
"Austin, TX- March 11, 2015 -- El Rey Network and Miramax announced today that Danny Trejo (Machete, Machete Kills) has joined the sophomore season of Robert Rodriguez's "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series." Trejo has been cast in the roll of "The Regulator," a horrifying agent of evil who has been summoned to perform a deadly errand. Trejo appeared in the "From Dusk Till Dawn" film franchise as "Razor Charlie."
Trejo has had a prolific career in the entertainment industry, yet his road to success has been hard earned and anything but typical, spanning imprisonment to helping young people battle drug addiction, to acting and producing.

FX Networks and Productions CEO John Landgraf told an investor conference Wednesday that "we have really now achieved a scale that allows us to truly compete with Netflix and HBO," predicting further ratings and financial upside for his group that is part of Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox. Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference in Beverly Hills, he also said the company will likely stop acquiring shows under so-called 10/90 deals, such as Anger Management with Charlie Sheen, George Lopez's Saint George and Partners with Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence. FX made a deal with the studio of Saint George that, if the first season drew high enough ratings, the sitcom would be renewed for a second season of 90 episodes (similar to the Anger Management deal). Will it be renewed or be cancelled instead? Stay tuned.
On Saint George, a recently divorced successful entrepreneur (George Lopez) struggles to balance the parenting demands of his All-American Anglo ex-wife and the cultural expectations of his overbearing Mexican-American mother. The cast includes Lopez, Jenn Lyon, Olga Merediz, Kaden Gibson, David Zayas, Danny Trejo, Diana-Maria Riva, Joey Pollari, and Tobit Raphael.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

Following a 10 episode run with low ratings, FX has reportedly decided to cancel Saint George. There won't be a second season of the sitcom.

This is timely — Wind Dancer, the company of Home Improvement co-creators Matt Williams and David McFadzean, has put in development a TV series, in which an anonymous Good Samaritan leaves cash for strangers throughout Los Angeles. The project is not inspired by the current Hidden Cash frenzy, in which an anonymous millionaire hides money-filled envelopes in La, posting clues about their location on Twitter to amass 355,000 followers since launching the social experiment in San Francisco about a week ago. Instead, Wind Dancer is adapting Good Sam, the debut novel of the company’s president Dete Meserve, which is being published next Tuesday, June 3. In it, a female TV news reporter in Los Angeles is looking for the Good Samaritan (aka Good Sam) who is anonymously leaving $100,000 cash on strangers’ front porches throughout the city (trailer below). Williams and McFadzean executive produce with Meserve and Wind Dancer head of production Judd Payne.

Airing against Ncaa basketball on CBS and TBS last night, George Lopez‘s sitcom Saint George drew 721,000 total viewers on FX, down 9% from last Thursday and a new series low for the comedy as it approaches the midpoint of its initial 10-episode run. Compared with its series premiere, last night’s fourth episode was down 40%. In adults 18-49, it delivered 401, 000 viewers, down 15% from last week and off 28% from the premiere (see ratings chart below). Saint George hails from Lionsgate TV and sibling TV distribution company Debmar-Mercury and is produced under Debmar-Mercury’s 10/90 model. That means a straight-to-series 10-episode order which, if a ratings threshold is met, triggers a 90-episode back order. Lionsgate/Debmar-Mercuty’s FX sitcom Anger Management, starring Charlie Sheen, is a product of the same model. Its original 10-episode order, fueled by a big initial interest in Sheen post-Two And A Half Men, hit the ratings target...

George Lopez knows his public intoxication arrest is no laughing matter. Still, the comedian couldn't resist making himself the butt of his own jokes on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
"Well, you know, apparently I'm a bigger Justin Bieber fan than I thought I was," Lopez, 52, cracked during Thursday's episode. "But you know how they always say whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but whatever happens in Canada, everybody knows."

George Lopez recently ran afoul of the law, getting arrested at a Canadian casino for public intoxication. On Thursday (March 13), he appears on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to apologize to his fans and explain what went down.
When asked what he's been up to since the last time he appeared on Ellen's show, Lopez cracks, "Well, Ellen, recently I lifted myself off the casino floor in Canada. ... Apparently I'm a bigger Justin Bieber fan than I thought I was. But you know how they always say whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but whatever happens in Canada everybody knows."
He also makes a few jokes about how polite the Canadian police are and how, when he fell asleep on the casino floor, someone commented, "I didn't know the dog whisperer drank that much."
But in all seriousness, Lopez says, "Since then I have not had a drop of alcohol.

George Lopez returned to TV Thursday night, and 1.2 million viewers tuned in to join him. The comedian's new sitcom vehicle, Saint George, launched on FX at 9 p.m. Those numbers are nothing compared to the premiere of 2012's similar FX comedy effort, Charlie Sheen's Anger Management, but Saint George also had nowhere near the buzz. What the new sitcom does share with Anger Management is heavy ratings scrutiny during this first batch of episodes. After taking a break from the small screen following six seasons of his self-titled ABC series, the actor-comedian will once again play himself in what he dubs "an edgier" sitcom, Saint George. The half-hour, multi-camera FX series, co-created by Lopez, David McFadzean and Matt Williams, follows the life of Lopez as a successful Mexican-American entrepreneur with a host of relationship issues. Hey, remember the Firewall & Iceberg video show? Well, after a variety of technical and medical mishaps has put the show on the shelf since early January, Dan and I were finally back in action yesterday (though for various boring reasons, we had to wait til today to publish, so don't be confused by Dan's "Happy Tuesday, boys and girls!"), and more bearded than ever before! On this week's show, we talked about the Oscar telecast, the Alfonso Cuaron-directed pilot for NBC's "Believe," the return of "Cosmos" to Fox, FX's George Lopez sitcom "Saint George," and a variety of reader questions that allowed Dan and I to object to "Dads," "Mixology" and "How I Met Your Mother" all in the same segment. What viewers can expect from Saint George, a new half-hour comedy series starring George Lopez, comes not from a description of the show, but from FX's expectations of it. It's the second time the network has used the 10/90 model (usually a broadcast prerogative), meaning that if the first 10 episodes get decent enough ratings, the series is automatically given another guaranteed 90. It's a choice that sets a network up to churn out comedy series that are financially viable to produce in the long-run, and will likely play well in syndication. Business-wise for FX, it makes

Boy, George Lopez sure knows how to party.
The comedian and star of the upcoming FX comedy "Saint George" (How's that for irony?) was arrested for public intoxication following a stand-up performance at Caesars Windsor casino in Canada on Thursday (Feb. 27), TMZ reports.
Law enforcement sources tell the website that casino security alerted police after discovering Lopez passed out on the casino floor. Though officers placed the comedian under arrest, no charges have been filed. He was simply placed in the drunk tank to sober up.
Lopez was released on Friday, set to fulfill his performance obligations that evening.
"Saint George" premieres Thursday, March 6 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt on FX.
