‘Ally McBeal’ Sequel With New Lead In Works At ABC From Karin Gist; Calista Flockhart Eyed To Return
Exclusive: Exactly two decades since David E. Kelley’s Ally McBeal ended its five-season run on Fox, the Emmy-winning legal dramedy starring Calista Flockhart is plotting a comeback with a sequel series, which is in early development at ABC, I have learned.
Written and executive produced by Karin Gist (Mike), I hear the new show will follow a young Black woman who joins the law firm from the original series (or its current incarnation) straight out of law school. The young woman is believed to be the daughter of Ally McBeal’s (Flockhart) D.A. roommate Renée Raddick, who was played by Lisa Nicole Carson on the mothership series.
I hear Flockhart has been approached to reprise her title role from the original in some capacity and to executive produce the follow-up. A decision on her potential involvement likely won’t be made until a script has been written.

New to Netflix in September are two kinds of undead: Season 5 of "The Walking Dead" and the revived-from-cancellation A&E series, "Longmire," which was saved by Netflix.
As far as movies, there's the restored version of the Oscar-winning 1962 epic "Lawrence of Arabia," Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," the first three "Rambo" films, the terrific "The Bank Job" with Jason Statham and "Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom" with Idris Elba.
There are also period dramas you might have missed from last year with Jessica Chastain ("Miss Julie") and Mia Wasikowska ("Madame Bovary") and hey, "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl!"

Now that the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse has been expanded to include Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Mud star Tye Sheridan as Cyclops and Drumline: A New Beat star Alexandra Shipp as Storm, it's time to focus on other aspects of the film as production looms closer. While promoting "A Most Violent Year," Oscar Isaac spoke about "X-Men: Apocalypse" and playing the villainous Apocalypse, including his powers and special effects. "One of his major powers is being able to change all the molecules in his body," he explained. "So I'll be changing all the molecules in my body. It's gonna be a lot of fun." Isaac went on to say that the character won't be completely CG. "It'll be a mix [of practical and digital]," he revealed. "I haven't had a script so I haven't had a chance to look through the script and see what the exact requirements are, but I think it'll be a mixture of physical, aided with some robotic technology." Meanwhile, director Bryan Singer updated his Twitter account with news that Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), Tye Sheridan (Tree of Life), and Alexandra Shipp (Drumline: A New Beat) have been cast as Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm.

So...that didn't go over well. Lifetime's already-controversial biopic on late R&B star Aaliyah premiered to near-universal scorn over the weekend, with fans and the singer's former collaborator Timbaland slamming the film on social media and even spawning the Twitter hashtags #Lifetimebiopics and #LifetimeBeLike, which humorously postulate a number of other potentially-wrongheaded celebrity hagiographies on the network. The rapper/producer was especially harsh, urging fans not to watch and later re-posting several #Lifetimebiopic memes, in addition to a series of videos in which he blasted the film: "A lot of people keep asking me if I’m watching that bullshit," said the hip-hop impresario on Instagram. "Evidently not. No way. Not Timbo." Particular scorn was heaped on talk-show host Wendy Williams, who executive-produced the film for the network, with a number of memes taking her to task for her involvement: A photo posted by Timbo the King (@timbaland) on...

Fresh from starring in VH1’s Drumline: A New Beat, Alexandra Shipp is taking on another major role. Shipp will play singer Aaliyah in an upcoming Lifetime biopic and she stopped by Big Morning Buzz Live to tell fans that as a kid, she tried especially hard to rock the R&B star’s style.
While in middle school, Shipp saw a photo of Aaliyah posing with Justin Timberlake. Shipp loved the singer’s tube top sweater and matching long sleeve fingerless gloves. “I went to three malls with my mom,” said the actress, describing her search for the items. “I was gonna wear [them] on the first day of school!”
But after trekking around Phoenix, a Macy’s employee told Shipp that the outfit was probably custom made for Aaliyah. As a kid, Shipp may have cried about not dressing like the singer, but doesn’t playing the R&B...

“Drumline: A New Beat” and “Saturday Night Live” performed better than expected in last week's Nielsen Twitter TV ratings, but both programs were still easily trumped by AMC's “The Walking Dead.” VH1's follow-up to Nick Cannon‘s 2002 marching band movie “Drumline” was panned on social media, but in doing so reached a Twitter audience of over 3 million (on the back of 363,000 unique tweets), making it the third most tweeted-about programming event of the week. Saturday's episode of NBC's long-running sketch comedy show “SNL,” meanwhile, ranked fifth thanks in part to host Chris Rock‘s controversial opening monologue and a subsequent sketch.

“Drumline: A New Beat” won't just pick up where the original 2002 feature film left off. According to director Bille Woodruff, the VH1 original movie will put a new spin on the story of the Atlanta A&T University drumline, with stepped up routines, a gay love story and a female lead. “The story will be different because it's about a girl, a female coming into this world that many people think of as being more male driven, and trying to get respect,” Woodruff tells TheWrap. With Drumline: A New Beat premiering on VH1, we thought it would be fun it to revisit the original 2002 film. A classic in its own right, Drumline, starring Nick Cannon, was deemed the most sports movie ever made, while others dubbed it the fifth best black college film. Here at VH1, we value it for all its life lessons that helped shape our college youth and taught us what it means to be “one band, one sound.”
1. Never step out of line
2. Keep your composure
Especially when they are just begging you to lose your cool.
3. If you’re going to have swagger make sure you have the talent to back it up
“I’ve had it with your no talent, wannabe gangster ass! You wanna prove once and for all that I’m better than you? Strap up!”
(Check out more awesome quotes from Drumline here.)
