- The disruptive Major Ballard, head of a troop of Indian Sepoys, arrives at the hospital, desperate to return to the fighting. Establishing that, like himself, Matron has lived in India, he asks for her personal attention but she discovers that he is going blind. As a career soldier he is angry at the thought of being invalided back home and Matron has to stop him fighting a potentially suicidal duel. After he has gone she pulls out a photo of an Indian man. Jaco, who has been trying to locate Joan's lover Anton, is attacked and, when Kitty tends to his wounds, he mistakes her for Joan, inadvertently revealing her secret. Whilst the volunteers are staging a concert for the patients Joan slips out to meet Anton, who has escaped from a POW train but she is followed by Sergeant Soper, who confronts her.—don @ minifie-1
- Matron Grace Carter has to deal with the brash and demanding Major Jocelyn Ballard who is desperate to return to the front. Ballard is from an Indian regiment and when he learns that Grace speaks Punjabi, he insists that only she treat him. As some of Grace's past life is revealed so is the real reason for his desire to leave the hospital. After Joan's friend Jaco is beaten by some of the locals, Kitty rushes to the site to help him. Believing he's speaking to Joan, Jaco reveals her secret. It's Staff Sgt. Soper however who later finds Joan, finally reunited with her German fiancé, Anton Erlich. Meanwhile, Flora thinks they should celebrate the fact they've been at the hospital for 3 months and decides to organize a fun evening - which somehow turns into a far more extravagant affair that she had initially planned.—garykmcd
