One of the only Adventure Time episodes that disappointed me
FairlyAnonymous4 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Adventure Time is a great show. The creator's know how to create a universe without forcing exposition into your face. Everything is done slowly and gradually (though maybe not deliberately). Which is why I hope that this episode actually comes around to something important later on.

Either way:

This episode was just bad. There is no other way to put it. The entire episode has this border gimmick where there is a 2D universe going on outside of the main plot. While this gimmick is mildly important to the plot, it didn't really change the plot in any way and was never explained.

The premise of the episode revolves around LSP (who is rather obnoxious) who is trying to get a new boyfriend after a failed attempt to time travel back to find her ex-bf Brad. The interesting thing is that she does meet a new guy and they take off real quick... so quick that she actually sleeps on his couch after having several drinks. While this isn't entirely inappropriate, I feel like the show is purposely trying to irritate the CN censors. It turns out Brad is trying to run a very important business that requires a deal with PB, and he successfully strikes a deal.

Brad has dinner with PB to negotiate, but LSP gets jealous and ruins everything and sends her new BF through the time-traveling device in the wrong way which ends up vaporizing him. The episode never "says" if he dies or lives, however a tiny version of him can be seen on the border of the screen, so obviously he lives in the 2D plane.

While the premise isn't horrible, but is bad is that the episode is needlessly dark. Adventure Time has a constant theme of having cute innocence with violent and dark undertones. The problem with this episode is that there are no cute moments. Everything in it is dark. LSP goes insane and tries to burn PB, PB tells LSP's boyfriend to EAT CYANIDE if he gets in danger, and in the end: LSP is TECHNICALLY A MURDERER! As far as LSP and PB know, the dude is dead. LSP is a murderer.

As much as I love season 5 picking up its pace on plot and backstory, it is starting to have reoccurring issues revolving around death. Within this season, a lot of characters have gotten axed and nobody within the show questions it. In this episode PB doesn't get mad that LSP sort of killed someone who was very important to the candy kingdom. She just shrugs it off. Earlier in the season PB actually lead someone to their death without really caring. Even more recently, she killed off hundreds of her loyal servants on a whim. This is a major plot problem because by all standards everyone in the show is becoming a murderer.

There is nothing wrong with plot development, but the show's humour now seems to be dark, dreary, and cold. There aren't any real light-hearted, crazy, non-sequitor jokes anymore. Everything must be "serious" and none of the main cast seems to mind. What ever happened to Finn caring about justice? Lately he shrugs when people die and doesn't mind PB's evil. The black humour would work better in this episode (and previous) if people reacted to it or at least acknowledged it. I'm starting to get nervous that Adventure Time might be trying to hard to appease older audiences by making everything cold.
