enjoyable mystery/horror anime
joelherro30 June 2014
I liked this show, but it could have been so much better.

It starts with Ryouta Murakami, a high school student who misses his long lost (girl) friend who he thought died in a freak accident when they were kids. Then one day a girl who looks just like his old friend, and even has a similar name, transfers to his class. He confronts her and she says she isn't his old friend, but he finds out she is a witch. He then goes on to meet other friends of hers who are witches too. They are being hunted down and murdered by the secret organisation that made them witches and Murakami helps them escape.

This show is kind of dark, with plenty of grisly deaths (most of which were censored in the copy I saw), but it also has some light-hearted moments, either to keep it from being too serious or just for the sake of being weird (is there such a thing as too weird in anime?). I personally would have preferred it to have taken the serious route, but it still works this way as the light-hearted stuff was mostly ecchi anyway, which isn't so bad. The story line was interesting and the characters were well developed (for only a 13 episode show) and the animation was great. So overall, I say, enjoy!

Brynhildr in the Darkness
Tweekums6 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
When he was younger Ryouta was unable to save the life of his friend Kuroneko; then one day he meets Neko Kuroha; a girl who looks just like Kuroneko. She has no knowledge of who he is though. It soon emerges that Neko is no ordinary girl; she has certain magical powers and she isn't the only one. A group of such girls have escaped from a local laboratory and are being hunted; Ryouta decides to help them. They can't just run away though as they must take a special pill every day or they will die and they only have a limited supply. If they are to survive they must either find where more pills are stored or find a way to make more. Over the course of the series we see just how much danger they are in as those responsible for their creation hunt then down with other witches… not everybody will survive.

Coming from Studio Arms it is hard not to expect something similar to the infamous 'Elfen Lied' as both feature girls with dangerous powers who have fled a sinister laboratory; it turns out this is quite different though. There is some bloody violence but it is nowhere near as gory or as frequent here and it isn't full of gratuitous nudity. There may be more gore when it makes it to DVD as some of the deaths appeared to be hidden by large amounts of 'censor steam' on the TV version. The story was enjoyable and the main characters were likable; even some of the apparently bad characters weren't entirely unsympathetic. The series looked good with decent character designs and backgrounds and the animation was good enough. Overall this was an enjoyable series which wasn't as dark as I expected but managed to keep me keen to watch each successive episode.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Confusion and mediocrity
amuru-8110517 May 2021
An excellent premise ruined by poor character development and pacing; slow and laborious initially and breakneck at the end.

Too little is answered; if Neko was unsealed how does she lose her memories at the end?

What actually is Valkayria and Neko; true witches or gifted humans?

What are the aliens? Who are all the girls who are made witches? What makes them attain the various powers they posses?

What actually happened to Neko during the 10 years that passed?

See what I mean?

If you are still inspired to see this series; you are truly a connoisseur of the genre, painstakingly separating the chaff from the wheat!

And this series, my friend is just that; chaff.

Worthwhile show to watch Warning: Spoilers
Hello Fellow Humans,

Brynhildr in the Darkness is about a species of aliens who take over girls or this mad scientist puts them into women. Not really sure. But this heartless scientist is killing girls and using them. They are called witches but they are science experiments and have powers from science it seems like. It has funny moments and happy moments and annoying things as well. First I have watched a ton of anime. I would probably be considered very knowledgeable. So I know this is a cartoon and not real life but when people draw cartoons they put real life into it. For example men in Japan if you look at anime are for the most part extremely shy and either nice or mean. Women in Japan are either smart or idiots and they fall in love with anyone quickly. Apparently women are super desperate and sexual while men are not sexual and run away. Again I know this is a cartoon. But with all the anime I watch this main male character is just a run of the mill anime male. He is of course super scared of girls and embarrassed when he sees them naked. I know when I was his age I would never have looked away especially if I was told by the girl to look. I mean in the USA 14+ year old boys are horny. It seems in Japan they aren't or maybe they just hide it better then we do. These girls are 16 years old so not children. But they have been kept in these horrible lab conditions. This guy helps them and whatnot. But for some reason he is extremely rude to some of them. Like the pink-haired girl he says she is flat as a board even though she is putting herself out there and offering herself to him. He is an idiot. She may not live for much longer and she just wants a date and a kiss and eventually wants more. But seriously would it kill you to take her out and kiss her and not say she is flat? During the swimsuit episode again he could have said you are so beautiful and yet he says she is flat. I don't get it. He is just a rude idiot and honestly doesn't deserve these girls. The large chested one ends up dying at the end and the guy never did anything with her. Seriously kiss her and take her out at least once. Give her a happy day she can cherish. Even if you aren't in love with her you can still be nice and give her something she desperately wants. This anime was twisted as these poor girls melted and died a ton. But I see humanity in this anime as well. Both with greed and doing anything you want to get what you want but also sacrificing for those you love and supporting others. So it has pros and cons. Also what is with Japan's fear of nudity with men? They all have public baths yet in Anime either the men are extremely uncomfortable seeing a woman or they can't stop looking. With the women they either like being looked at or they beat up someone looking or scream. It's just a body, don't freak out. If someone accidentally sees you don't beat them to a bloody pulp and if you see someone then take a mental photo and then without making a big deal look away and say sorry. But don't make a big deal of it. It's like with children you make a big deal when they bump their head they cry but if you don't they don't cry. Overreacting doesn't help anything. But yeah this show has your sci-fi and magic or technology that acts like magic in it. It has your sexy girls who are naked all the time in it. It has your stupid male character who is overly afraid of girls in it. It has enemies to defeat and you lose some and win in the end. Or so you think. But yeah it is a good anime for the most part. But it is frustrating at some parts. So it is a worthwhile show to watch.

Crazy good horror.
wyndon-8090318 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
VERY LIMITED SMALL SPOILERS nothing major. Very graphic anime with gore, some ecchi and its an emotional ride of highs and lows. Very different then anything I saw but im still new to anime less then a year and dont usually delve into horror. Episode 10 gave me the saddest and most horrifying scene I've seen in an anime yet. Short 13 episode anime. As kids Murakami the MC followed his crush when she said she can prove aliens, a terrible accident occurs and he blames himself for causing her death. Fast forward 10 years. With the MCs photographic memory he constantly relived that moment all these years and suddenly one day a student enters the classroom that's a eerily close resemblance to his childhood crush. This is an anime about witches experimented on that are on the run from an organization thay wants them back. The witches are powerful and can take care of themselves but there is a huge problem. If they don't have a certain pill made only at the facility then they die a most horrible and gruesome death. They have a limited supply that's running out! What does the MC and the mysterious girl have to do with all of this and what choices will they make. Filled with sadness, joy, selfless and selfish acts and gruesome horror. This anime kept me on the edge of my mind wondering what will happen next. I cluldnt stop watching. One of those great anime that makes you really care about multiple characters' well being and success and hoping they don't fail.

"Brynhildr" flirted with a good story but fan service killed it.
dameon_green3 June 2020
The story concept was really interesting however the execution was imperfect and the "Fan Service" was distracting enough it kept detracted from the story. If they had left a few of the secondary characters subplots centering around their loneliness and desire to experience the joys and pleasures of youth before death it would have been enough, the cheesy tropes and random naked girls subtracted from the promise and depth.

Pros:
  • Solid Music.
  • Good concept and some challenges were believable.
  • Character concepts were interesting.
  • Sacrifices and losses.
  • One of the few shows a harem makes sense.
  • An anime actually used basic lifesaving techniques.

Cons:
  • Excessive "Fan Service".
  • Predictable.
  • E10's loss and mid-show resolution was poorly handled.
  • Male protagonist is clueless beyond reason.
  • Disappointing ending.
