“Don’t be such a dreamer,” says Bob (Esai Morales) to his younger brother, to which soon-to-be teen star Ritchie Valens (Lou Diamond Phillips), né Richard Valenzuela, quickly retorts, “My dreams are pure rock ‘n’ roll.” It’s the kind of blunt, overearnest exchange found in countless music-based biopics, but it also exemplifies La Bamba’s penchant for the cartoonishly archetypal. Indeed, everyone surrounding Ritchie is stripped of both nuance and agency as their roles in the film rarely extend beyond fueling or antagonizing the future icon.
Ritchie’s girlfriend, Donna (Danielle von Zerneck), the namesake of one of his biggest hits, is little more than a poodle skirt and a cheery smile, while his doting mother, Connie (Rosanna DeSoto), is the quintessential ultra-supportive parent. Bob is certainly the most fully fleshed out of this trio, but even most of his personal ups and downs are presented as being directly...

On the very first episode of his interview show The Director's Chair, Robert Rodriguez (above) talked with John Carpenter about his influences and how he became a filmmaker. In the in-depth and very informative interview, Rodriguez acknowledged that Carpenter was one of his inspirations. Now Rodriguez will follow directly in Carpenter's footsteps. He is in talks to direct a new version of Escape from New York, according to The Tracking Board. Carpenter's original, released in 1981, starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a convicted bank robber who was charged with rescuing the president of the United States after he crash-lands in Manhattan, which has been transformed into a lawless maximum security prison. The movie became a cult classic and inspired a sequel...

Last night news broke that Ben Affleck stepped down as the director of The Batman for the good of the film. I was kind of disappointed with the news because I was looking forward to seeing Affleck take on the challenge.
The director's chair is now wide open for someone to come in and lead the film into glory or failure. After Affleck dropped out, some fans immediately started to rally behind Kevin Smith for the job. The guy has a long history with comic books and even wrote the limited series Batman: The Widening Gyre. He has also recently been directing episodes of Supergirl and The Flash for The CW.
Smith also already shared two ideas for what he'd like to see happen with the Batman solo film saying:

While Quentin Tarantino may be a poster child for the hardcore film-lovers--what with his rejection of digital filming and projecting, and the upcoming roadshow for his latest movie, "The Hateful Eight."--the writer/director still has a solid appreciation for the medium of television. In fact, the filmmaker was originally planning on turning his sixth film, "Inglourious Basterds" into a mini-series before French director/producer Luc Besson convinced him otherwise (via "The Director's Chair"). With that in mind, it's not a huge surprise that Tarantino may be making the jump to the small screen for his next project.
Speaking with Premiere Magazine (and translated by Birth.Movies.Death), the writer/director opened up about what he's thinking about tackling next.
"It always takes me a while before thinking about the future. That said, I own the rights to this book [I've] wanted to adapt for a while, and the time may...

As the man behind "Rocky," "Rambo," and "The Expendables," it can be easy to dismiss the talents of Sylvester Stallone, given the simple, bruising physicality of much of his work. Sitting down with Robert Rodriguez for "The Director's Chair," he shares how it all began, the lessons he learned, and much more across the full episode, made available by El Rey network. And if you're wondering what has sustained Stallone across his decades in the game, it's his all or nothing approach that keeps him energized. Director Robert Rodriguez has possibly come up with the coolest idea for a TV interview show, especially for fans of cinema. "The Director's Chair," airing on Rodriguez's El Rey Network, shows the Desperado filmmaker sitting down for a casual chat with some of the best filmmakers alive. Previous episodes already showed discussions with John Carpenter, Guillermo del Toro, and a Quentin Tarantino two-parter. For his fifth and latest installment, premiering this week, Rodriguez talks with director Francis Ford Coppola, one of the greatest maverick filmmakers who gave us some of the very best the art form has to offer. Rodriguez's format for the show is not the typical Q&A most director's commonly sit down for (see more examples at elreynetwork.com). He has more of a conversation with them, casually interviewing them about their careers, their films, and both their successes and failures. Even if the only movies that Francis Ford Coppola ever made were the three Godfather films, he'd still be a cinematic legend. But he didn't just stop there: The Conversation, The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, Dracula, Apocalypse Now. The list goes on and on. He is, simply put, one of the Greats. That's why Coppola is such a welcome choice for The Director's Chair, a fantastic ongoing series on El Rey Network where Robert Rodriguez chats candidly with filmmakers about the entirety of their careers. In the past he's hosted Guillermo del Toro, Quentin Tarantino and John Carpenter, and they've all resulted in very worthwhile conversations about the realities of being a working artist in Hollywood. El Rey Network has been doing some pretty cool things since it launched earlier this year (like recently signing a deal to broadcast 255 martial arts movies from the Shaw Brothers collection), but our favorite has to be its The Director's Chair series where Robert Rodriguez sits down some heavy-hitter filmmaker friends for a lengthy interview. And considering the long, rich, history Tarantino and Rodriguez have together, we are expecting this to be a must-watch event for movie fans. In fact, the interview was so meaty, it's actually the first in The Director's Chair series to run two hours long. And since this is...

Sin City director Robert Rodriguez recently launched the El Rey Network, a channel aimed at cinema-loving, English-speaking Latinos. In addition to airing classic TV shows like The X-Files and Starsky & Hutch, El Rey also provides original programming, like a TV series based on Rodriguez's own From Dusk Till Dawn and a Q&A program called The Director's Chair where Rodriguez talks movies with some of the biggest directors in the game. Sitting down in The Director's Chair in August: The helmer's good buddy Quentin Tarantino.

Robert Rodriguez is a man who has so many ideas and ambitions that generally we don't find him directing projects like he used to. That's the sacrifice of an uber-producer. He more recently launched the El Rey Network which is currently home to the From Dusk Till Dawn series as well as Matador. Another program that's being launched is The Director's Chair which features Robert Rodriguez interviewing various directors. The first episode featured master John...

For those of you who may not know, aside from being a self-sustaining filmmaker, director Robert Rodriguez also has his own TV network now called El Rey Network. It launched earlier this year and has fun stuff like a series adaptation of From Dusk Til Dawn, but it also has more compelling programming for those interested in the filmmaking side of things. One such show is "The Director's Chair," an hour-long series that features Rodriguez conducting in-depth interviews with various filmmakers. His most recent victim was Guillermo del Toro, and the two had quite an extensive chat, but one of the more fascinating bits involved del Toro's process as he designs his incredible movie monsters for the big screen. Watch now! Here's a tease of Guillermo del Toro's episodes of "The Director's Chair" from El Rey Network: The rest of the episode features some great discussion about Pan's Labyrinth,...

"'Mimic' almost destroyed me. I went three years without being able to lift another movie off the ground."
If you're a Guillermo del Toro fan of any stripe or if you have Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network, I have fantastic news.
Next Wednesday, June 30th, at 9Pm Et/Pt (and let me tell you, saying Et/Pt out loud is tons of fun - try it!) Del Toro will be on El Rey's show The Director's Chair where Robert Rodriguez (always of El Mariachi to me) interviews filmmakers.
It should be an hour long discussion of Del Toro's career and if you haven't heard the man speak at length about himself and things that interest him, you really owe yourself a look-see.
I'm hoping for so many Mimic stories. That's classic Harvey Scissorhands right there.
