Watch it for Don Frye
BandSAboutMovies20 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Fifteen years ago, two teenage girls were murdered at Merrymaker Campgrounds. Everyone thought it was just an animal attack, the case was closed, the camp was condemned and the killer never found. But whatever or whoever it was, it still waits in the woods, ready to kill again. This film from director John Woodruff - his first full-length movie - was written by Jonathan Murphy. They had previously worked together on the project The Stalker Experiment.

Larisa Oleynik plays Anita Bishop and you may remember her from 10 Things I Hate About You, Mad Men, The Secret World of Alex Mack and The Baby-Sitters Club. That's not the only person you'll recognize in this movie. Heather Tom from The Bold and the Beautiful shows up, as does Christian Oliver (Snake Oiler from the Speed Racer movie) and Don Frye. That's right - former UFC fighter and New Japan Pro Wrestling monster heel and the man who turned Yoshihiro Takayama's face into pudding, Don Frye!

Seriously, this film is worth watching just for seeing Frye. He should be in The Expendables. He's a legit tough guy, after all.

Oliver plays Roland Baumgarner, a writer who wrote a famous book all about the murders. He's been invited to cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the new Merrymaker Camp. That seems like a bad idea. Guess what? It is. The horror that Roland wrote about has now come back to potentially end his life.

Not *that* bad
nickyb-7913119 November 2019
Really not awful. Like a TV movie. Camera, light are ok to a professional level not like the usual indie wannabe film makers. My subwoofer liked the deep bass which was the best thing about this movie. This in the days of blockbuster brick and mortar would be a filler on the shelves. Had to be very poorly produced to be a 1 star; this is edited well and uses proper lighting for night scenes with actors that appear to be trained at a college level so gets a 3. Watch if you're bored but not good enough for a planned night in.

Regretted that I watched this to pass the time...

Warning: Spoilers
A cliched unsatisfying story and ending. The writing was so so, limited effects which was good as the effects shown are slightly below average, racial tropes and jokes are problematic and offensive, and this is not a horror film. It has elements of horror but it is a who done-it. I would have liked to have seen deeper secondary character development.

The only possible upside in this movie for me is that the main character can now write a second novel telling the full truthful story, and I would not watch that film.

Some of the monsters in the film get away with their actions while others are demonized.

This is a very unsatisfying film and I'd like to give it one star but people really put effort into it.

Novel idea
goatrope6715 March 2020
I read the naysayer reviews and thought they may have missed the point. This a fun twist on the camp murders. Some of the dialogue was silly. Some of the acting was overblown. But it was fun. It also had some comedic relief throughout. Overall it's not high art but it's worth a watch.

Think about it!!
hdg-719023 November 2019
If you sit and watch this movie and instantly think it sucks or is crappy and belongs in the trash then you aren't really watching it. Sitting and watching this movie I personally thought it was great for the simple fact it peruses what an older horror movie is like. It's not like any of the newer horror movies with the guts and the gore and that was obviously not the intention from the director. It was very clear he wanted it to be original and he did very so make it original. From the acting to the music and everything in between I thought this movie was amazing!! In order to understand the movie and how it was made you have to realize and understand it's not a movie full of big names and what we are all so used to nowadays. Just sit, watch and think about movies from back in the day that are honestly just like this one.

Underrated summer camp mystery/slasher
Wuchakk1 September 2020
A summer camp in the northeastern USA is reopening after it was shutdown 15 years earlier due to the mysterious deaths of a couple girls. The author of the book that made the camp famous is invited out for the celebration (Christian Oliver), but people start dying again. Larisa Oleynik & Christine Donlon run the camp while Don Frye plays their stepfather. Erin Daniels appears as the author's wife.

"Animal Among Us" (2019) is an Indie horror in the summer camp murder mold à la "Madman" (1981) and, of course, the 80's "Friday the 13th" flicks. Unlike those movies, however, it's less of a slasher and the last act is twistier, which some criticize as "convoluted."

The average rating on the internet is excessively low and simply not accurate. This is a well-made low-budget camp slasher with defined characters, an atmospheric score, a fairly compelling mystery and all-around proficient filmmaking for what it is. There's a bit o' humor, mostly surrounding the campy Bigfoot-hunter, but otherwise it's a relatively serious murder mystery taking place at a summer camp.

On the feminine front, Christine Donlon has a striking face & eyes while Whitney Davis is an alluring Latina. Jasmine Dustin, Camryn Molnar and Gracie Young are also on hand (the latter two in very brief roles) but more coulda been done with them.

The film runs 1 hour, 30 minutes, and was shot in Lebanon, Ohio, about 25 miles northeast of Cincinnati, with some scenes done in Los Angeles.

GRADE: B-

My Review Of "Animal Among Us"
ASouthernHorrorFan10 January 2020
"Animal Among Us" starts out as a classic horror with decent characters, and interesting set-up points. There is a strong push to sell it as a creature feature. Which is done pretty well. Unfortunately, other than a few thrilling moments, the first hour drags, and the energy is almost non-existent. Which is disappointing considering it had an exciting start.

The acting is good. A couple of the characters seem to stall out somewhat, mostly the stereotyping does more to trip up an otherwise straightforward thriller, than they do to advance any story. It is clear these were put in as simple fodder for the killer. Still, there is some nice character interaction, quality acting, and good drama in a lot of the film.

The horror was a bit of a disappointment. There was some good kills that happened in "Animal Among Us" but they happen so quickly that you never get to enjoy those moments. Other than that, the horror elements offer atmospheric scenes of traditional creature horror. Until you get to the last third of the film. A surprise reveal, a horror trope switch off , and then a few more twists just muddle the story.

Overall "Animal Among Us" disappointed me a bit. It had a interesting start, great tease of some indie creature horror, and promise of some classic storytelling. Unfortunately the film isn't what I thought it was going to be, the pace was sketchy, and far too many surprise twists just ruined the entertainment value. It will have its fans, "Animal Among Us" has moments that work, but I have seen this type of gimmick ending done better without hurting the story.

Decent Effort at best
kyleallencole927 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this flick, but it was a super letdown. By the time everything towards the end unfolded, it was a total mess. They definitely should of done a different plot line and made this a straight up creature flick with lots of attacks and gore. Instead what we got a less of a creature flick and focused more on some type of messed up family storyline instead. Quite a bit of plot holes as well. The lunatics in this one, thought the author was the real monster since he cashed in on their painful family history. This was definitely a revenge flick than anything else.

I will say this, definitely not a bigfoot or sasquatch monster flick, which was highly disappointing.

The acting and scenery though was perfectly done so that was decent. Really no bloody or gory special effects to speak of and the ending was a complete bore. Sorry I just was hoping for a better flick.

does your shirt say squatch on it?
shaunephillips282 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The title of my review is something said in the movie and what made it official that I was watching a bad movie.

Before that, the movie was borderline. Parts of felt well shot. Other parts felt poorly acted. I think whoever directed the movie was trying his best, in bad circumstances.

What sealed the deal that this was a crapfest was the reaction given to a diry and bloodied girl strolls out of the woods and the guy says, does your shirt say squatch on it?

What kind of reaction is that. In what world would that be something someone says? I think I might put that quote on a shirt.

Just watch it!
dlnoko22 November 2019
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The story is clever, the acting is more than decent. The characters flow together. The cinematography, sound, and lighting work well together. They stay within their special effects capabilities.

So everyone giving this less than 4 stars needs to chill. Of course it is not a big budget movie with huge stars. That's the beauty of indie films. I think they did a pretty great job. Like I said, just watch it.

A decent B-movie.
lord-blade19 October 2020
Low budget, but well done. A nice, original twist on a classic trope that was very well presented. There's good acting, along with the classic campy nonsense. A decent "monster". And some really interesting plot twists I didn't expect. An enjoyable little film.

I found this movie a reasonably good watch, the acting isn't terrible, the plot is pretty good so long as you actually watch the whole film. If you quit half way through you will have missed a big part of the story.

Crisis Averted
nogodnomasters13 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Professor Roland Bumgarner (Roland Baumgarner) is married with a child and one on the way. Pretty co-eds throw themselves at him and he doesn't mind. He is best known for his fictionalized version of the Merrymaker Campground murders. Anita (Larisa Oleynik) and Poppy (Christine Donlon) Bishop are the owners of the infamous campground soon scheduled for a re-opening after a seven-year hiatus. Burl Wolf (Don Frye) is the rough step-father. There is also a Mexican woman (Whitney Davis) who was recently attacked. Jonathan Murphy plays a Bigfoot blogger like Dana Carvey as he searches for Sirquatch.

What is clear is that the folks who work at the campground are hiding something. That is the only real mystery outside of some minor twists. And even with that, there are limited options.

The film created great characters. At one point I" disliked" all of them because they were all rascals. The main problem was the scriptwriter (Jonathan Murphy) didn't know what to do with these characters once he spent all this time to create them.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Ignore the negative reviews. They're from those who don't appreciate the genre and retro horror story.

Plus, it has a really good ending!

Fun, campy thriller with great writing
radiohigh19 November 2019
I loved the writing in this film. A lot of twists I didn't see coming, along with great acting and beautiful camera shots, made for an enjoyable watch. I'm not too big of a horror fan, so because this film was more thriller and psychological, I give it an 8/10!!! Looking forward to getting it on DVD.
