As noted in the first of these two final episodes, "aloha" is a Hawaiian word meaning hello and goodbye.
So what feeling did the aloha from Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 19 and Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 20 give off?
Sadly, it was the latter, as Magnum and company said goodbye to their loyal viewers after five seasons.
And yet viewers' hope for another revival still floated in the Honolulu air.
Magnum P.I., debuting in 2018, was the last of Peter M. Lenkov's trilogy of reboot series, following the powerful Hawaii Five-0 in 2010 (which aired for a decade) and the less successful McGyver in 2016 (which ran for five seasons).
Magnum faced a stricter path right from the start. I mean, Magnum without the iconic mustache? What were they thinking?
But now, five seasons later, it's impossible to conceive of a bushy 'stache covering up any of Jay Hernandez's handsome face.

Magnum P.I. is ending for the second time shortly after the new year begins — a two-hour event is set for January 3 — but at least this time, we’ve had time to prepare. (NBC picked it up for 20 more episodes following CBS‘ cancellation.) “Maybe we didn’t know the show was going to end, but we had an inkling, so everybody wrapped it up really nicely,” Zachary Knighton (Rick) told TV Insider. “I think the fans are going to be really excited about it.” Perdita Weeks (Higgins) teased something “very, very surprising… not altogether good, but it’ll all be alright in the end.” She’s also said that the series ends in a “very sweet” way for Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins and hopes “people will be content with it because it is the end.” For Weeks, the show ending and saying goodbye to Higgins (“She was my life for five years”) is “bittersweet.

Magnum P.I. -- and its passionate fans -- have been through the mill.
The successful reboot launched on CBS in 2018, and we've been hooked ever since.
We've watched the trials and tribulations of Thomas Magnum, Juliet Higgins, and everyone in their orbit.
Compared to many other procedurals on the air, It's been fun, light, and infused with romance.
Unfortunately, the series has faced a lot of hurdles, many of which have left fans gasping for air. It's not often that a show is canceled and survives on another network, and when it does, hopes rise for a longer run or a fantastic finish.
Here we are at the end of the road again, and frankly, it's a miracle the fans are still so devoted to it because now two networks have now mishandled Magnum P.I.

NBC, the only broadcast network to have original, homegrown scripted series on the fall schedule with The Irrational and Found, will also launch most of its strike-impacted scripted slate the fastest.
The network has announced its midseason premiere dates, which include mid-January returns for Wolf Entertainment’s three One Chicago and three Law & Order dramas on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
That is a month before dramas on the other major broadcast networks are set to return with new episodes and a couple of weeks before any scripted series elsewhere come back. It is a testament to the well oiled machine that Wolf Entertainment is. As Deadline has reported, the company is capable to start delivering new episodes after as little as two months if starting from scratch with no banked scripts.

Private investigation acquired a modern twist on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 15.
Thomas and Juliet agreed to take on a missing person's case remotely from three clients scattered across North America.
The missing person was a gamer who played Battlecraft with them online.
A complicating wrinkle was that none knew the gamer's real name. But Higgins made short work of that problem, hacking his food-delivery account to establish his name and address.
They soon discovered that not only had Kilo, the gamer, been abducted, but that he had been taken for an insidious reason.
Kilo had worked at a fertility clinic, and his I.D. was used to gain entrance so the thief could steal frozen embryos to be held for ransom.
Kidnapping and theft soon escalated to murder with his discovery of Kilo's body. A couple of twists later, Katsumoto had the scheme's mastermind (using that term loosely) and her rogue accomplice in custody.

Magnum and Higgins uncovered a personal question they needed to answer while conducting a missing-person investigation.
Fortunately, that didn't slow them down during a complicated case on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 15.
Also, the couple got to experience the added wrinkles that technology could throw at them.
In what had to be a first for them, they held a virtual meeting with three clients scattered across Continental North America, three aficionados of the online game Battlecraft.
The trio reported that another of their number, Oahu-based gamer Artie, had gone missing, and they were concerned for his welfare.
Not surprisingly, Hpd wasn't willing to investigate an unresponsive gamer who hadn't picked up for only a couple of days. He hardly qualified as a missing person. Hence Thomas and Juliet's involvement.
Making things more difficult was that none of their clients knew the real name for Artie, an abbreviation of his lengthy gamer name,...

It wasn't Juliet's finest moment on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 14.
For the better part of five seasons, Higgins has been dishing out that condescension for which the British are renowned.
But for part of one day, the shoe was on the other foot after she flunked her private investigator license renewal test, which Thomas somehow passed.
Now that Juliet has become his partner in all ways, Magnum knew enough to keep his gloating to a minimum. He knew it was an "even a blind squirrel can find a nut once in a while" situation.
Higgins kept calm and carried on, pitching in unofficially however she could while Thomas and Rick raced to clear one of Rick's regulars who had been charged with murder.
It was enjoyable to see Rick coming to the fore from his usual behind-the-scenes fixer role, although it too often felt like Magnum taking part in...

Wasn't it fun to watch Magnum and Higgins switch places, if only briefly?
Still, Juliet found a way to help Thomas and Rick solve a complicated case on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 14.
It was great to see Rick step to the forefront after spending much of the past three episodes more in the background.
It was only fair that Rick stepped up in Higgins' absence since the client was one of his regulars accused of a crime he hadn't committed.
This is analogous to Kumu pitching in when her friend Ying got ripped off by a scammer on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 12.
It was ridiculous that a licensing issue would sideline Juliet. Wouldn't you think dealing with paperwork would have been among her duties?
They had a good reason for being late, doing a skip trace to save their client from forfeiting her bail money. Jamie, the examiner, should have...

Richard Roundtree, an icon of Blaxploitation film who starred as detective John Shaft in Gordon Parks’ 1971 action thriller, died Tuesday afternoon after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 81 years old.
His death was confirmed by Patrick McMinn, his manager since 1987.
“Richard’s work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film,” McMinn said in his statement. “The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated.”
Roundtree was a leading man from the very start of his lifetime in screen acting. After beginning his career in modeling, he secured “Shaft” at the age of 28, marking his feature debut. The MGM release earned $12 million in ticket sales off of a $500,000 production budget, helping to save the studio from bankruptcy. Gordon Katsumoto was the star of Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 13.
Not only did an undercover Gordie help Magnum and Higgins locate a missing chef and shut down a robbery ring, but he also got to indulge his cooking hobby as a chef at a high-end restaurant.
Even better, he participated in creating a thank-you dinner with Konoa, the recovered executive chef, for Thomas and Juliet.
It's always great when a supporting character such as Katsumoto gains added depth through a spotlight episode such as that.
It showed there's more to him than the dour detective who often rags on the two P.I.s for their borderline illegal practices.
So what are Magnum and Higgins up to on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 14?
According to the logline supplied by NBC, "Magnum and Rick race to find a missing witness who can exonerate an innocent man accused of murder."
That brings up a couple of questions.

With the fall TV season well underway, broadcasters are beginning to get a sense of whether they have a hit on their hands with their new shows — and if fans will keep showing up for long-standing unscripted favorites as the Hollywood strikes has kept scripted fare off the schedule.
Several of this season’s launches benefitted from NFL game lead-ins, including overall ratings winner “60 minutes” (CBS), which scored a 1.73 rating in the key 18-49 broadcast demo during its Sept. 17 debut, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day figures. This season’s runner-up for highest rating was Fox’s “Krapopolis,” which premiered as the most-watched animation series debut of the past decade with a 1.18 rating following an NFL doubleheader.
Other high-ranking premiere contenders include unscripted favorites like CBS’ “Survivor,” which scored a 0.84 rating, ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” which locked down a 0.64 demo rating, and NBC’s “The Voice,” which drew a 0.6 rating.

Katsumoto got to fulfill a fantasy.
Gordon, a closet foodie and amateur chef, showed off his knife skills while pursuing kidnappers on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 13.
His foray into a restaurant kitchen was part of a case, as Juliet and Thomas had been hired by the owner of the ritzy Chez Aloha to locate Kanoa, his missing executive chef.
Milo, the owner, thought the kitchen staff might better understand what had happened to Kanoa.
But since Magnum and Higgins had recently dined there, they needed someone the staff wouldn't recognize to get them to gossip.
Poor Katsumoto. He didn't realize that the high-pressure kitchen environment which he had entered didn't lend itself to talking.
He was also quickly dubbed "Microwave" since new chefs at such restaurants don't tend to stick around very long.
Well, Gordie didn't. But that was because the investigation took a different direction, eliminating the kitchen staff as suspects.

Let's hope that Magnum and Higgins keep away from marine life in this episode (and in the future).
After all, repossessing that stingray on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 12 must have cost them money (not that that's something new).
The stingray ate all of the tropical fish in the La Mariana aquarium, which had to be expensive to replace. And how oblivious would Rick be not to notice the different fish?
Of course, Rick was so distracted over his possible date with Piper that maybe any lack of observation wouldn't be inexplicable.
The last episode's case scaled up quickly as Thomas and Juliet searched for the scammer who had ripped off Kumu's friend Ying, which grew into a matter of human trafficking.
The case on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 13 promises to be less significant as the P.I.s are hired to find a missing high-end chef. (Let's hope it's a paying gig this time.

When will criminals learn to avoid victims connected to Magnum's inner circle?
This time out, Kumu's friend Ying had been scammed by a man who then disappeared on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 12.
Kumu knows people, so this crime against her mah jongg buddy wouldn't stand.
Let's face it. Kumu doesn't get enough screen time for someone in the opening credits.
She's been a rock when it comes to Robin's Nest and La Mariana. She was there for support when T.C. moved into rehab on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 11.
So when Kumu asked for help fo ripped-off single mother Ying, Magnum and Higgins dropped everything. That's only right after all that Kumu has done for those around her.
Tracking down scammers in China appeared daunting, as did combing through all the WhatsApp correspondence between Ying and Han.
Watching Kumu skewer Thomas for his lack of technological prowess was hilarious.

Two big questions need to be answered as Magnum P.I. faces what's likely to be its final ten episodes.
When did its producers find out the end was coming? It was announced to the public in late June, but those involved with the series had to know long before that.
And did that give them any opportunity to tie storylines up at all? Since all of its episodes were in the can when NBC decided to divide the season into two ten-episode blocks, probably not.
When Stephen Hill (T.C.) did an exclusive interview with TV Fanatic in mid-April, he remained optimistic about the show's future.
"I want to go ten seasons," he said then. "I'll take all the seasons I can get. I love it here in Hawaii." Who wouldn't?
Right before CBS lowered the axe on the series after the fourth season, its creators provided a season finale...

Magnum P.I. fans are some of the most patient out there.
The fans went into overdrive in 2022 when CBS canceled the beloved drama after four seasons.
They made their voices heard and got their show saved.
It's just a shame that, one year later, the series has been canceled again.
The good news is that the fans are resilient and are again devoted to getting their favorite show an additional season.
If the upcoming back half of Magnum P.I. Season 5 does turn out to be the final-ever episodes, we won't be left with a big cliffhanger.
Cliffhangers on broadcast TV shows keep us talking over the summer until fresh episodes are made available.
They usually leave us with plenty of talking points about how they will affect the following season.
Magnum P.I. showrunner Eric Guggenheim has revealed to TV Line that Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 20 is "quite satisfying."

Magnum P.I.’s Season 5 finale “absolutely works” as a series finale, despite not being planned as one, showrunner Eric Guggenheim tells TVLine. As such, he sees no need to make edits or go so far as to shoot new scenes to put a tidier bow on the cancelled island drama.

Dick Butkus, a Hall of Famer who was among the greatest, most respected and most feared players in NFL history and also had a long acting career in TV, film and commercials, died overnight in his sleep at his Malibu home. He was 80.
His family confirmed the news on social media.
After back-to-back All-America seasons at the University of Illinois, Butkus was picked No. 3 overall by his hometown Chicago Bears in 1965. A fearsome force on the field and rather gentle giant off of it, he spent his entire injury-shortened nine-season career with the club, redefining the linebacker position in the process.

Active from 1965-73, Butkus was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for both the 1960s and ’70s and was selected for the All-Time NFL Team in 2000. A six-time All-nfl selection and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, he played in eight consecutive Pro Bowls and...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 11 “Hit and Run.”] Heading into the second half of Magnum P.I.‘s final season, fans have a couple important questions: Is the show really going to end? And could there be a baby in Higgins (Perdita Weeks) and Magnum’s (Jay Hernandez) future? The midseason premiere answers the second. As the promos have shown, Higgins is late to join Magnum for a client meeting — and, also, late, as she stresses after trying to be vague. “It’s probably a false alarm, but over-the-counter pregnancy tests just aren’t reliable, so I’m going to pop by my physician’s to get a blood test,” she explains. Magnum stumbles over his answer — “That’s great, great that you’re getting tested, not great that you’re not pregnant not that being pregnant wouldn’t be great.” — and fortunately for him, the case interrupts. When you think about it, the big revelation on this week’s The Morning Show makes perfect sense. Of Course Hal was dumb enough to get so caught up in anti-Biden sentiment that he stormed the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The only thing wilder than Days of Our Lives‘ latest recast is the story behind it.
The role of Theresa Donovan, which has been portrayed by Jen Lilley on and off since 2013, is being taken over by a new-yet-familiar actress — one who’s already playing another character on the show. As confirmed in the credits for the Peacock soap’s Oct. 2 episode, the new Theresa is none other than Emily O’Brien, whom viewers have known as Gwen Rizczech (now von Leuschner) since 2020.

NBC is making changes to its fall 2023 schedule, with the broadcaster also setting premiere dates for the upcoming season.
The broadcaster had previously announced its fall schedule on May 12, just 10 days into the writers’ strike that largely shut down Hollywood productions. But with no end to that strike in sight and SAG-AFTRA now joining the writers on the picket lines, NBC is being forced to shake things up.
Most notably, the network is no longer planning on its Wednesday night “One Chicago” block, nor will episodes of “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Svu” air on Thursdays. Instead, NBC will air the season finale of “America’s Got Talent” on Wednesday, Sept. 27 and the People’s Choice Country Awards on Thursday, Sept. 28. The network will then air reruns of “One Chicago” shows at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 4 followed by new episodes of “Quantum Leap” and “Magnum P.I.” “Quantum Leap...
