Warning: Spoilers
During an outing, two friends - Nadia and Marie - notice a superb red sofa for sale. Although they try out the sofa, amidst much giggling, they do not buy it. The next day or so Marie gets the surprise of her life when some removal men bring her the sofa in question. Delighted by Nadia's generosity - for who else could have made her this gift ? - Marie rushes over to thank her friend. However Nadia, who is not her usual merry self, firmly refuses to discuss the issue...

"Le canapé rouge" is a French "policier" movie made for television. (At least I watched it as one continuous movie. Other descriptions call it a mini-series in two episodes, which may mean there exists a variety of formats.) Nobody can accuse "Le canapé" of being humdrum, since it boasts a striking plot full of jaw-dropping twists. What begins as a tale about two giggling friends going shopping, quickly turns into a dark, twisty thriller about the horrors human beings are capable of, including adultery, rape and murder.

The movie also boasts an interestingly complex heroine who, through her daring, unearths a criminal of unusual cunning and cruelty. The setting in an attractive French city - La Rochelle ? - adds further to the interest.

On the minus side some of the developments in "Le canapé" seem far-fetched. For this reason I award it only seven stars. Anyway, "Le canapé" deserves far more critical attention than it's getting on imdb.

I can't say I was impressed by the intelligence of Marie's husband, a police inspector. For a professional sleuth he seems to notice very little of what's going on around him, even in his own house. Presumably he's one of those persons who would continue to grill steaks on the barbecue while a flying saucer landed right in front of them.
