- After Annie decides to leave the agency and work for McQuaid, she discovers a possible link between McQuaid and the Chicago bombing. Meanwhile, discovers that Auggie covered up Annie's heart condition.
- Calder's superior Deputy DCI Joseph Nichols hints that not suspending Auggie for covering up Annie's heart condition can cost Miochaels his own job, so Auggie is suspended. Annie, having noticed Roger's presumed murderer Allen Langer in McQuadi's apartment while paying a friendly visit, now suspects him and applies for a job, which he eagerly grants. Auggie helps her copy his computer files, notably concerning a top-secret black ops elite team Flint, which McQuaid later tells her about as well as Boaz's long employment, seemingly spontaneously while seeking a romantic relationship. The trail leads to a secret basement, which was used to practice the Chicago bombing, which Arthur is shown, after McQaid's deputy Caitlyn Cook, who suspiciously followed Annie, helped fight off two henchmen. - Annie sees Nick talking to the dog walker that Roger said was following him. She hangs up with Auggie as Nick rejoins her. He says it was "a work thing" at the door. She stays for coffee.
Joe Nichols with the DCI calls Calder Michaels to a meeting tomorrow morning.
At Auggie's house, he pulls pictures of the tenants in Roger's building, but Annie doesn't see the dog walker. She does see him in security camera footage from the train station where Roger was killed. Auggie says they have to share what they know, but Annie points out the investigation will be taken away from them and she has the best access to McQuaid. Auggie reminds her she's suspended, but she says that's part of her plan.
Later, Annie goes to talk to Joan at Langley. Annie resigns. Joan tries to talk her out of it, urging her not to lose faith, but Annie's mind is made up.
That night, she meets Ryan McQuaid for a drink and tells him her news. She asks for a job. He doesn't want her working from him to prevent them getting together, but she reminds him he's always saying she can have it all.
Annie checks in with Auggie on her way in to work at McQuaid Security. He has ID'd the dog walker as Allan Langer, who worked for McQuaid until three years ago. Auggie gives her a flash drive that can wireless sync with McQuaid computer if it's nearby, but his computer will freeze for the five minutes it's working. He checks that Annie isn't emotionally involved with McQuaid, she assures him her head is in the game.
Calder meets with Joe, who informs him Auggie could be a problem and was involved in hiding Annie's heart condition.
Annie arrives at the flashy headquarters of McQuaid Security, dressed for her new high powered gig. She goes up to Ryan's office, but he's not in. Caitlin Cooke finds her and shows Annie to her office, giving her a stack of paperwork and her first assignment. She frostily informs her that as a probationary hire Annie will have a clearance level of 1 and there are no exceptions.
They're interrupted when Annie is called to a meeting. She walks into a reception in her honor, hosted by McQuaid. "I got to see Annie work first hand on a few operations. Working side by side I witnessed a dedicated patriot who will pursue a target at any cost, and a comrade who will gladly share a bourbon with you at 10 a.m. in a hostile country. Ladies and gentlemen, we are lucky to have her."
Caitlin is annoyed that Ryan is promoting her to the field right away.
Arthur finds Annie and welcomes her aboard. He tells her Joan is upset, but he understands her wanting to try the private sector.
Later, Arthur talks to Joan on the phone. Joan is sure Annie is up to something.
At night at Auggie's, Annie reports she still hasn't be able to get near Ryan's computer. Auggie checks that everything is OK and Annie assures him it is.
The next day, Annie meets Ryan in his office with the drive. She sits away from his computer to draw his attention and asks why he hasn't given her an assignment yet. She asks if he's holding something back and he turns to his computer to get her one. She distracts him by asking for a drink.
At Auggie's house that night, he reports on an encrypted file McQuaid has on former employees with tactical training code named "Flint." The file includes Allan Langer, and also the Chicago bomber Borz Altan. There are payments to Borz until just before the bombing.
"Annie, there's a version of this that ties McQuaid to Chicago," Auggie warns.
Later at Langley, Calder calls Auggie into his office to ask if he covered up Annie's medical condition. Auggie plays dumb, but Calder doesn't buy it.
Calder goes to see the doctor who treated Annie after the car accident. Under threats, the doctor says that he found Annie's heart condition that night and put it in her medical file. He's surprised it's no longer there.
Annie drops in on Arthur at McQuaid, wanting to use his clearance to access the database. But she won't tell him why. He says no.
Ryan calls Annie up to his office with an assignment in South Africa. Then he tells her her instincts were right and he has been keeping something from her. He tells her that Borz was part of a black ops group that he employs outside his company that has contracts with the DOD and other federal agencies and he's committing a federal crime by even telling her about it. He tells her it's code named Flint.
He hopes to get closer to her and doesn't want secrets between them.
Annie goes to meet Auggie and tells him what McQuaid says. He suggests it's counter espionage 101 and he's just throwing her a bone to keep her at bay. Auggie tells Annie he thinks she's being played and he needs to tell Joan. Annie begs him to trust her to do it her way -- he gives her a day.
Annie goes in to McQuaid HQ and sees Arthur. She tells him about Flint and says she's trying to help McQuaid. She asks him to ask his top level contacts about Flint and verify they do work for the US government, as opposed to something much worse.
At Langley, Calder sits Auggie down with evidence of his hack. Auggie continues to play dumb. When Calder reminds him how they worked together to bring down Henry Wilcox, Auggie still doesn't talk. So Calder tells him he's opening a full investigation into the hack and Auggie is not allowed to handle anyone til it's over.
Arthur and Annie meet outside the office. His contacts were all very tight lipped. One denied it existed but said if such a thing did exist, it would be contacted via fax. Another friend at the NSA was able to get the physical address of that fax.
Annie drives out to what looks like a rundown warehouse in the middle of nowhere. She grabs her gun and picks the lock, going inside. There is a fax machine plugged in on a desk, but the building seems empty. Then she sees an open padlock above a door in the floor. She takes out a flashlight and goes down in her spike heels. She hides when she hears footsteps behind her. She grabs Caitlin Cooke out of the shadows.
Caitlin accuses her of spying on McQuaid for the agency and says she's been following Annie. She saw her meet with Auggie and Arthur. But she says she has no idea about the facility they're in now.
Annie sends Caitlin ahead in the darkness to investigate, but soon Annie is grabbed from behind. Her gun is knocked out of her hand. Caitlin is also attacked and she fights back. Men come at them but the women fend them off until Caitlin is able to get Annie's gun. She kills one of the men and fires at Allan Langer, but he gets away.
Caitlin recognizes the man she killed as a former McQuaid employee, but has no idea what he's doing there. Annie doesn't quite believe her.
At Langley, Joan confronts Calder about his plans to go after Auggie. She subtly reminds him that Calder has his own secrets (his escort) and she's sure he'll do the right thing.
Back at the facility, Arthur has joined them. It looks like a bomb went off in the room. They hold up lights and walk through a floor plan drawn on the floor. Annie recognizes it as the Chicago office. Caitlin verifies that if McQuaid was going to use a bomb in an op, he'd use one in the practice run.
Annie suggests if the chemical signature matches the bombing, they'll know it's where the bombing was planned. None of them want to believe it. Annie says it's time to take it to Langley.
At Langley, Annie, Auggie, Joan, Calder, Caitlin and Arthur discuss what they've found. The bombing chemical matches Chicago.
Caitlin gave Auggie access to McQuaid files and he found that before Chicago, McQuaid Security was about to go bankrupt.
Caitlin has to admit that Chicago was a game changer for the company.
Calder orders McQuaid brought in.
Joan stops Annie. "I know you don't work for me anymore, but great job," Joan says.
Auggie checks in with Annie, who is questioning all of her instincts. Auggie suggests a drink. Annie agrees, right after she goes home to change into something that doesn't have Caitlin's blood on it. Calder checks in with Auggie and puts him on the McQuaid case, dropping his investigation into Annie's altered records.
Annie returns home to change and finds a seemingly scared McQuaid waiting in the shadows. He was tipped off about the manhunt for him. She plays dumb as he tells her that he's innocent and thinks he's being set up. She draws her gun and tells him she's taking him in.
"How could you think that I did this?" he asks.
She tells him about seeing Allan Langer at his house, and he acknowledges Allan is an employee. But when she says he had Roger killed and she saw the bunker, he says he has no idea what she's talking about. He insists again that he's being set up, and for all he knows she could be the one doing it since she joined his company three days ago.
He tells her that a spy's last resort is his intuition and right now his is telling him to trust her. He says she has the best instincts of anyone he's ever seen and asks her to trust her own and believe him. He goes to leave, but she tells him to stop.
"If you think I am capable of this atrocity, then shoot me. Because I'm not going to spend the next six months in some dungeon at Langley waiting for whoever set me up to carry out the rest of their plan. I have to get to the bottom of this," he says.
She lets him leave.
At Langley, Joe drops on Calder, who tells Joe he's not going to reprimand Auggie, especially after he uncovered the McQuaid involvement in Chicago.
Annie arrives late to meet Auggie for a drink, but he's heading back to Langley to help try to track down McQuaid. He asks her if she thinks McQuaid will reach out to her, but she says no. Auggie apologizes for thinking she was compromised and tells her she did great work.
