- Phil takes over Halloween decorating duties from Claire. Jay is upset when he wants to dress up as Prince Charming but Gloria buys him a Shrek costume. Mitchell has a problem in court with the stenographer working in a scary costume.
- It's time for Halloween again! Cameron's (Eric Stonestreet) Superman costume was...well, thankfully it didn't last long. He was taking Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) trick-or-treating, and she was dressed as Waldo. Not the best costume for Cameron if he's trying to find her, as he has a bit of difficulty with that. Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) didn't have time for a costume, as he had to deliver closing arguments in court. He didn't want to lose his fourth case in a row, and with the complicated case he had, it didn't help the stenographer showed up wearing a spider costume which was distracting the jury. The judge condescendingly blaming him for asking she not wear the costume and the opposing counsel mocking him didn't help, either.
Jay (Ed O'Neill) and Gloria (Sofía Vergara) got costumes as well. Gloria did. She was Princess Fiona, which meant Jay naturally had to be Shrek (2001). But he wanted to get dressed as Prince Charming, even donning a wig of wavy hair. It certainly turned Gloria on, so they put Joseph down for a nap and they had one of their own. Only Stella stole the wig and buried it in the backyard, so Jay had to go trick-or-treating as himself, but still wearing the Prince Charming jacket. He's upset that he had lost his hair because he had a good head of hair in his youth, and Manny (Rico Rodriguez) going dressed as Frank Sinatra and only knowing he sung My Way wasn't making him feel better. But Gloria straightened Jay out, saying he only had four more hairs when they first met. It was Jay being a happy husband, buying everyone costumes and being excited about Halloween that made her love him.
Phil (Ty Burrell) took charge of the Dunphy household's Halloween decorations this year because of Claire's (Julie Bowen) work schedule, and he decided he was going to create AwesomeLand, which featured all of the things he found awesome. (CLAIRE: That's a pretty big umbrella.) And now Phil had ANOTHER idea for AwesomeLand. He had everything, even a huge bunny coming out of a hat. Claire couldn't believe it, and then things really hit the not-so-awesome fan. Their new neighbors, Ronnie and Amber (Steve Zahn and Andrea Anders), were decorating their house in a scary fashion and were starting a neighborhood contest to see what house could be the scariest. Well, Claire's decorations once put a man in the hospital, so she wasn't going to take this lying down. She blew off work and converted the entire house into a scary insane asylum. (CLAIRE: I have plans for the bunny.) Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould) would be mental patients, she would be a sadistic nurse, and Phil could be the demented doctor.
PHIL: Twenty years of "no" but for this you'll dress like a nurse!?!?
Naturally, Alex's big problem with that was a woman being the nurse instead of the doctor (completely ignoring her parents' sex life), but Phil wasn't going to be sucked in. He refused to dress for the asylum theme. Which turned out to be a good thing, because Amber went ballistic, claiming she was in an insane asylum for six month. Phil and Claire were mortified and immediately changed it back to AwesomeLand. Not sure why Alex had to dress as Tess McGill from Working Girl (1988), but naturally Amber and Ronnie were making that up so they could win the contest. Claire was NOT happy about that and vowed revenge against the two.
Lily was upset with Cameron because they were supposed to participate in the Halloween parade at her school and were supposed to be in matching costumes. Cameron quickly switches to Wizard Whitebeard to match Lily's Waldo, but then he loses her (just like you'd expect) when it's time for the parade. To make matters worse, the parade was after school instead of during school, which meant he had to take off to coach football. Had he read the flyer, he would have known all of this. Of course, had Lily given him the flyer, she wouldn't have gotten mad at him for abandoning her. But that night, Mitchell pointed out to Lily that Cameron went all-out for her for Halloween. Cam spent all night making her Waldo costume, 2 hours on eBay looking for the glasses, and he even searched through ten boxes of Mitchell's stuff for his satchel from college to match the one Waldo carried. Oh, and Mitchell also found the flyer in Lily's backpack, meaning she never put it up on the refrigerator like she was supposed to. Lily felt bad and apologized to Cam. Thankfully, they still had a shot at the regular-sized candy bars.
Claire, realizing she was hooked on making scary Halloweens, apologized to Phil for the way she behaved. And also wanted to show him she had a head for business and a bod for sin. NOW Alex was grossed out.
