There’s been much to enjoy from Doctor Who‘s last few seasons – Peter Capaldi, Michelle Gomez, the odd standout episode here and there – but ultimately, it’s been a bit scattershot in quality. It took a while for the Twelfth Doctor’s era to find itself, which meant it lacked the cohesive quality of David Tennant and Matt Smith’s eras. Seasons 8 and 9 were enjoyable TV, don’t get us wrong, but not up to the expected quality of the show.
With season 10, though, Doctor Who finally got its groove back. It seems that, as this was the final run for both Peter Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat, they decided to go all out in making it a year to remember. Due to the erratic scheduling of the Capaldi era – there was no season at all in 2016 – season 10 was hands down the best run of the show in a good long time.

The Doctor Who series 8 disc release features a wealth of bonus material including the terrific Earth Conquest doc. Here's Pete's verdict...
If you’re reading this review, then there’s a good chance that you’ve both seen the twelve episodes that make up Peter Capaldi’s debut series and know exactly what we’re going to say about them. Series 8 of Doctor Who has been hailed by many as the best in several years, and one of the best since the show’s revival in 2005. It’s a verdict that we here at Den of Geek find it hard to argue with, frankly. From the light-hearted opener Deep Breath to the action-packed and slightly bonkers finale Death In Heaven, with thought-provoking episodes like Listen and Kill The Moon along the way, Series 8 has been a confident start to a brand new era for the world’s longest-running sci-fi programme.

Doctor Who's eighth series averaged 7.4 million viewers across its 12 episodes.
Statistics released by the BBC show that Peter Capaldi's debut series also attracted 18.9 million requests on BBC iPlayer.
Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi turned down audition for 1996 TV movie
The figures are equal with Matt Smith's final series, and only slightly down on series six, which averaged 7.5 million viewers in 2011.
However, Capaldi's opening episodes attracted an average of 100,000 more viewers than Smith's first series in 2010.
Showrunner Steven Moffat said: "We never take it for granted, but the miracle has happened again - the nation has taken a brand new Doctor to its heart."
Danny Cohen, Director of BBC Television, added: "It's been an outstanding debut series for Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who and I'm very grateful to Peter, Steven Moffat and everyone involved."

Michelle Gomez fans, rejoice – we may not have seen the last of Missy after all.
It may not come as a complete surprise, but it seems the ever-teasing Steven Moffat hasn’t ruled out a return for The Master’s new female form.
The hows and whys? Moffat is taking some inspiration from the classic years on that front, it would seem.
“I always rather enjoyed how they handled this problem when the wonderful Anthony Ainley was playing the part in the 80s,...
