David Wnendt, the German director behind controversial coming-of-age movie “Wetlands,” Hitler satire “Look Who’s Back” and teen crime drama “Sun and Concrete,” is once again pushing boundaries with his next feature film project.
Backed by distributor-producer Constantin Film and with Seven Elephants lead producing, Wnendt has embarked on the feature film adaptation of the award-winning novel “Athos 2643” by Nils Westerboer.
Wnendt, who will both write the screenplay and direct the theatrical film, promises an “emotional and spectacular experience that will take the audience into the vastness of outer space,” according to a press statement.
“Athos 2643” has been described as “‘The Name of the Rose’ in Space.” In the distant future, a mysterious crime unfolds on the lonely Neptune moon of Athos. An artificial intelligence responsible for life support is suspected of murder. An inquisitor specializing in artificial intelligence is sent to solve the case.

Here’s a first look at Hagen (working title), the German-Czech fantasy drama epic, which now counts Fremantle as its worldwide distributor.
Based on Wolfgang Hohlbein’s bestselling novel ‘Hagen von Tronje’, the series is a reimagining of the medieval Nibelungen folk saga, which is widely considered as an inspiration behind modern fantasy franchises such as George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings.
Super-indie Fremantle has jumped to acquire rights outside of German-speaking territories, with the agreement covering the six-part series and accompanying feature film. Fremantle’s stablemate at German conglomerate Bertelsmann, Rtl, has German streaming and TV rights.
Fremantle plans to launch the series at its Fremantle Presents showcase this Friday (March 1) at the London TV Screenings. This follows an agreement between Rebecca Dundon on behalf of Fremantle and Friedrich Radmann on behalf of Constantin Film.

It's clear that writer/director David Gordon Green and his co-screenwriter Peter Sattler had to fight an uphill battle when making a sequel to William Friedkin's 1973 film "The Exorcist" in 2023. Not only did the filmmakers have to remain cognizant of what narrative ground the four or five previous films in the series had already covered (more on that number below), but they had to somehow rise above the thousands of "Exorcist" knockoffs that have arisen in the last 50 years to provide a fresh take on the material. No easy feat, seeing as how the Tubi library, as of this writing, currently has 49 films with "Exorcist" or "Exorcism" in the title. Apart from "Alien" and "Emmanuelle," "The Exorcist" may be one of the most imitated films in cinema history.
To address the "Exorcist" sequels, Green merely employed the same tactic as he did with his "Halloween" movies: ignore them entirely and reboot the story.

“The day after Alfred Herrhausen’s murder, I wanted to make a film about it,” says German producer Gabriela Sperl. “Because I knew the official story we were being told just wasn’t the truth.”
This was back in 1989 and Herrhausen, the charismatic chairman of the board of German financial giant Deutsche Bank, had just been blown up, his armored Mercedes-Benz shredded by a 15 lbs bomb hidden in a bag on a bicycle parked next to the route Herrhausen and his security convoy traveled by every day.
It was a shocking and surprising act of assassination, quickly blamed on the Red Army Faction (Raf), a far-left German terror group which, a decade earlier, had killed a number of prominent capitalist figures, including Jürgen Ponto, the head of Dresdner Bank, and Hanns Martin Schleyer, the president of the German employers association. Netflix is getting into the "let's kill Nazis violently" sub-genre of World War II films with the upcoming "Blood & Gold." This movie may not be on your radar just yet, but it seems like the kind of title that is destined to build up some buzz once it arrives on the streaming service next month. To that end, a new trailer for the German war flick has been released online that offers an extremely fun look at what promises to be a murder-heavy tale of revenge.
What's particularly entertaining about this "special trailer" is that it gives the film an old-school, grindhouse makeover that gives us a little bit of a Quentin Tarantino flavor, with "Inglorious Basterds" being the obvious touchstone. But it feels more at home with the fake trailers that were attached to 2007's "Grindhouse," even though this is a very real movie that you can watch in just a few weeks.

Helping a selection of five European films to connect to Latin American distributors, Efp’s Film Sales Support (Fss) program has awarded grants to three sales agencies to step up their digital campaigns for this year’s hybrid Ventana Sur market.
Two companies from Germany have received support this year, as well as one from Spain. The unspecified amounts are to help the companies to “broaden their online presence and solidify business communications with buyers from Latin America attending Ventana Sur this year,” according to a press statement.
The new initiative underscores the fact that Ventana Sur has become an ever larger distribution springboard for European salles agents and their European films. “Ventana Sur is also a platform for European films, and this year sales are happening online. Johnny Depp has been asked to resign from his role as Gellert Grindelwald in the “Fantastic Beasts” films, but the film is shooting in the U.K. now and hopes to hit theaters in the summer of 2022, so Warner Bros. will likely be moving quickly to find someone to recast in the role. While we’ll update you with the news of who actually gets the part when that time comes, we did some nerding out and did our own fan casting for who might be able to replace him. Incredibly there are some actors who have yet to star in a Harry Potter movie, so here are some we had in mind.
Colin Farrell
This one would make the most sense, as Grindelwald spent the majority of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” disguised as Graves, who in a last minute reveal at the end turned out to be a transfigured Depp.

Enfant Terrible
Oskar Roehler is one of Germany’s most well-traveled directors, so his desire to mount a portrayal of Rainer Werner Fassbinder in his latest feature Enfant Terrible isn’t surprising. Produced by Markus Zimmer through Bavaria Filmproduktion, Roehler taps Oliver Masucci (who played Hitler in the adaptation of Look Who’s Back) to play Fassbinder. His supporting cast consists of Katja Riemann, Hary Prinz, Anton Rattinger, Felix Hellmann, Erdal Yildiz, Jochen Schropp, Sunnyi Melles and Isolde Barth. Roehler premiered his 2004 title Agnes and His Brothers in the Horizons sidebar in Venice and competed in Sundance’s World Dramatic competition in 2009 with Lulu and Jimi.…...

Constantin Film has been named Germany’s most successful producer and distributor of German films for 2015.
The Munich-based company was presented with the “Ffa Industry Tiger” by the German Federal Film Board (Ffa) at an awards ceremony in Berlin last night.
The award came with $3.8m (€3.4m) “reference” funding for the company to invest in future film projects and theatrical campaigns.
Constantin attracted more than $2.9m (€2.6m) in production “reference” funding for five in-house productions, including the year’s leading film at the box office Fack Ju Göhte 2 and the comedy Er Ist Wieder Da, and distribution “reference” support of $968,000 (€851,000) based on the performance of nine releases.
“2015 was a superb year for us,” Constantin’s CEO Martin Moszkowicz said as he accepted the Industry Tiger Award. “[Fack Ju Gothe 2] was the best film in the company’s history.”

One told me she loved me, and asked me to hug her. One, to my relief, started hitting me." Director David Wnendt told the paper his aim was to make people realize the feelings that led...
