- Father Brown and Lady Felicia visit the local barracks for the unveiling of the Dunkirk war memorial for which they have helped raise funds. The hero of Dunkirk was Colonel St Clare, who allegedly killed several Nazis with his broken sword but at dinner drunken Major Rawlings accuses St Clare of cowardice and is later found slain with the sword. St Clare is the obvious suspect but Father Brown, believing him to be innocent, discovers another person who remembers what happened at Dunkirk and has waited thirteen years before taking action.—don @ minifie-1
- Father Brown, Lady Felicia, Mrs. McCarthy and Inspector Sullivan are all guests at the local military base where there is to be a memorial to the battle at Dunkirk. The base commander, Col. Laurence St Clare, was one of the many heroes of that battle and was renowned for wearing his sword - now in the regimental museum - into battle. There is tension among the officers, particularly with Major Rawlings publicly accusing the colonel of murder. Not long after, Rawlings is found dead, stabbed with the colonel's sword. Military Police Lt. Anthony Graham leads the investigation and immediately suspects Sid Carter of the crime. Father Brown is chomping at the bit to get involved but even he doesn't quite realize that there are in fact two murders to be solved.—garykmcd
- Father Brown, a veteran padre, and other locals who helped raise funds for the local garrison's Dunkirk Memorial in honor of many fatal casualties attend the festive unveiling, but crime strikes: first the showpiece sword of CO Colonel St Clare, who abandoned lady Felicia after the disastrous expedition, is stolen, then soon after, while Sid engages in a 'military' competition' with MP lieutenant Anthony Graham, veteran Major Rawlings who got drunken at the dinner and accused the colonel of cowardice, is found outside, slain with the sword, his broken watch stooped at 12.43. The military insists to exclude even police Inspector Sullivan, already present, from the investigation, but like he points out finds stopping Brown, who prefers soldier suspects to Sid, wasted effort, while the father separates both crimes, seeks the key in the Dunkirk bloodshed and dismisses the credible murder confession.—KGF Vissers
