Despite the slightly farcical ending, where we get the Lady Felicia Botham moment, I'd class this as an excellent episode of Father Brown. Series three in particular has had too many frivolous, slightly silly episodes, I get that it's afternoon telly, but an episode like this is more grown up, and all the better for it. Rich content, we get triumph over adversity, with Doctor Chandraty overcoming racial prejudice, we get the intriguing story of the land, and of course the rather startling unveiling of the killer.
Much of the success of this one I would say comes down to the performance of Haydn Gwynne, who is absolutely terrific as Jane Milton, such a brilliant, charismatic actress, she steals the show with a moving, powerful turn. Williams is as entertaining as ever, and physically funny here.
I know the ending is nuts, but the sight of Lady Felicia stepping up to hit a six in high heals and that hat had me in fits of laughter, a hilarious moment.
Quality episode. 9/10
