Parody done well

Meta, parody and fourth-wall jokes are a tough line to walk. Community did it well many times, and poorly sometimes too. Supernatural took it too far and all subtlety was lost. IASIP generally sticks to background jokes and undercurrents (like Mac's weight gain), although there has certainly been some loss of subtlety as the character traits become more extreme (Mac's homosexuality and Dennis' neurotic narcissism being the biggest examples... other characters like Frank and Charlie have always had extreme traits, so it's hard to read any changes). This process is sometimes called Flanderization, just as an aside.

Recent seasons of IASIP, like the revival seasons of Futurama, contain some recycling but also still quite a lot of originality, cleverness and inventive humor. This episode had some recycling in it, too -- a lot of the jokes were well-tread material, like Mac's desperate need to be loved by his mom and Dee's obsession with making it in comedy. But it also deftly executed fourth-wall jokes in rapid succession in a way that did not have to be understood to be enjoyed. That's key: whether you see it as fourth-wall humor or not, the show works equally well. It's basically two shows for the price of one. Three, if you count Old Lady House.

If you enjoyed the concepts behind Cabin in the Woods, Community or EdTV/ The Truman Show, I think you will enjoy this. I did.

Old Lady House

The "satirizing sitcom conventions" is a plot that has been done countless times before but iasip manages to do it in a way that doesn't feel stale

That one reviewer really compared this to yahoo-era community... that's just insulting.

Past few seasons haven't been as good as the earlier seasons but they were still pretty darn amazing, and so far... this season is one of the show's best.

Warning: Spoilers
Very minor spoilers:

The premise of "Old Lady House-A Situation Comedy" is so simple and so well executed! The jokes are very tight and the way they went about showcasing two side characters with the gang as a framing device is excellent.

They really showcase the character dynamics between Mac and his mom, Charlie and his mom, and the relationship both moms have with each other. It is very much a "so messed up it is hilarious" which feels very sunny. They really chose to play up the polarizing energy and relationship between Mac and his mom, he thinks she is an angel who loves him very much and he truly cherishes her, while she is over all of it, she wants nothing more than to be left alone to chain smoke until she keels over. She is the only character who never smiles in the episode and it just gets me.

I watch this episode if I have had a really hard day and it lightens the mood every time.

I can't decide if this episode is bad...

Or really bad.

I think ive only see it twice...MAYBE 3 times.

I think I'm hoping theres more...or I'm missing something.

It is a forgettable episode....so forgettable that i cant remember if its good or bad...or un-re-watchable.

It just falls completely flat.

I MAY give it one more watch...but i don't think I'm missing anything.

It just isn't funny.

And referencing another reviewer...I LOVED Community.

Took me a while to come around, but that show is easily rewatchable...until the last 2 seasons. Yahoo season was one of the worst things ive ever watched.

I never comparedy love of sunny woth my love of community. Hmmmm.

Sunny at its peak vs Community at its peak?

Neck and neck. They are both amazing.

But...last few seasons of Sunny have felt like Community's yahoo season.

Whatever sunny had....they ain't got it anymore.

May be able to pull out a kirk Gibson like season or episode...but i fear its best days are behind it.

That makes me sad.
