This feature contains major spoilers for both The Dark Tower movie and novels.
There’s an old adage in the film industry that you’ve probably come across if you’ve listened to enough podcasts or watched a few interviews with those in the business, a familiar nugget of received wisdom that most filmmakers will elicit, perhaps with a contemplative shrug, or maybe whilst wearing a pained grimace of world-wearied experience: nobody sets out to make a muddled movie. In the case of the eagerly-awaited Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, there’s no arguing that like virtually all movie projects in existence (and perhaps even more than most), the genesis of this film was undoubtedly rooted in love.

Anybody that appreciates good theater and good moviemaking will be in awe of Arthur Penn’s marvelous visualization of this tale of a determined woman achieving the impossible — teaching a child that can neither see nor hear. The knock down, drag ’em out scenes between Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke are unique, to say the least.

Fans of the world’s most demonic doll are in for another blood-spattered treat as Chucky continues his reign of terror behind the locked doors of an insane asylum in Cult of Chucky, coming to Blu-ray and DVD on 23rd October 2017, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica (Dourif) is wrongly convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new group-therapy tool — a “Good Guy” doll — a string of grisly deaths plague the asylum and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all. Andy (Vincent), Chucky’s now-grownup nemesis from the original Child’s Play,...

It’s been amazing to watch Don Mancini shepherd the entire Child’s Play franchise for nearly 30 years now, successfully navigating these films through various eras in modern horror, all while keeping the spirit of everyone’s favorite possessed killer doll Chucky very much alive and kicking.
This week, Cult of Chucky made its debut on various formats and platforms—Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, and the rated version is also now available on Netflix—which meant it was the perfect time to post our interview with Mancini here on Daily Dead. Here’s the catch though: what follows ended up being a very spoiler-filled interview at times, just because there’s so much that I’ve long enjoyed about this franchise, and wanted to dig into a lot of different topics with Chucky’s creator while I had the opportunity.
So, if you haven’t had the chance to see Cult of Chucky just yet,...

Chucky the demonic doll has been terrorizing audiences since he first appeared in Child’s Play in 1988. That legendary horror film has spawned six sequels, with the entire franchise coming from the pen of screenwriter Don Mancini – who made his directorial debut with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky. Mancini has remained at the helm of the series and, to coincide with the DVD release of an unrated cut of the latest instalment – Cult Of Chucky – he recently held a Q&A session on Facebook.
During the session, Mancini was questioned about a particularly noteworthy death scene, which takes place in the main asylum setting. In it, Chucky murders a patient who’s strapped to a gurney by ramming an oxygen tank into the floor, causing it to launch upwards – shattering a glass skylight, sending countless shards of glass down onto his victim and decapitating her. The end of the shot occurs...

The Child’s Play franchise is undoubtedly one of horror’s time-honored cornerstones, but it’s not without its faults.
Seed of Chucky, for instance, is considered by many to be one of, if not the most contentious entry into Don Mancini’s cult slasher series. Released in 2004, critics lambasted the horror sequel for its shortage of scares and flat humor, though at least based on early reviews, the recently-released Cult of Chucky (our verdict) heralds a return to form.
When it comes to Seed of Chucky, however, Mancini is quick to defend the divisive sequel, after the writer-director told EW that the 2004 thriller has arguably aged better than any of its peers. Said he:
“That’s the one that honestly, its reputation has grown the most, arguably because it had the furthest to go.”

Let’s talk memorable movie killers for a second. Since Mrs. Bates first slashed her way through the shower curtain in Room 1 of that roadside motel in Psycho (1960), franchise-minded murderers have had a hard time of it in the consistency department, regardless of how strong they may have lunged out of the gate. Established classics of the genre, like Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street have all given birth to an array of sequels, remakes and reboots that may have extended their nasty protagonists’ shelf life, but none could approach their origins in terms of frights or filmmaking quality.
The exception to this rule of inconsistency and ever-diminishing returns in serial killer movie franchises seems to be the maniac who may have been the most unlikely to succeed, or certainly to endure, to begin with. He would be Charles Lee Ray (played with customary intensity...

Even though it won’t be seeing a theatrical release, a strong argument could be made for Cult of Chucky being one of the most anticipated horror movies to drop in 2017. Not only will it include returning favorites such as Jennifer Tilly and Alex Vincent, but it will also carry over the darker tone that director Don Mancini established in the previous film, Curse of Chucky.
As you may know by now, the sequel will debut on October 3, being made available on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand. Not only that, but according to IGN, it’ll also be coming to Netflix on that very day as well. Thus, you have one more option as to how you can get your Chucky fix.

Horror was in a weird place in the early 1990s. Most of the big franchises of the ’80s had more or less run their course, and in their place were a handful of new “icons” that would be turned into franchises whether it was warranted or not: the Child’s Play movies continued to be a growing concern, as did Candyman and Hellraiser and Leprechaun. One attempt to launch a new franchise that never quite took was 1991’s Warlock, which inspired two sequels of varying quality before calling it quits. All three films are now gathered together on Blu-ray for the first time as part of the Warlock Collection, the latest in the Vestron Video Collector’s Series from Lionsgate.
The original Warlock is genuinely something special—maybe not a new classic, but certainly a really good version of what it is. It’s a film with an impressive...

Described as a combination of “A Nightmare on Elm Street and Twin Peaks,” Channel Zero: Season One – Candle Cove makes its UK DVD and Blu-ray debut next month, thanks to Second Sight.
Inspired by a Creepypasta blog post by Kris Staub, Syfy’s spine-chilling six-part anthology series was created by Nick Antosca (Hannibal) and stars Paul Schneider (The Tunnel) and Abigail Pniowsky (Arrival). Channel Zero: Season One – Candle Cove has been critically acclaimed by TV and horror fans alike and now arrives for its UK home entertainment release on 9 October 2017.

Prepare to swear allegiance to the Cult of Chucky.
Four weeks out from release, Universal Pictures has conjured up a whole host of creepy stills – stills in which the Devil Doll checks into an asylum, much to the dismay of those haunted patients desperate for some sense of normalcy. But Chucky has other ideas in mind.
Building off the nightmarish events that transpired in Curse of Chucky, Don Mancini’s direct-to-video horror sequel primarily takes place in a mental hospital, where Nica (Fiona Dourif) is being nursed along the road to recovery. Also starring Summer H. Howell, Alex Vincent and Jennifer Tilly, who’s now considered to be a cornerstone of the Child’s Play franchise, Cult of Chucky is tailor-made for long-time supporters of the Devil Doll, but it’ll be fascinating to gauge how the film fares with lapsed fans and the moviegoing masses.

Even though each and every entry into the Child’s Play film franchise has its supporters, odds are that some of you reading this were quite relieved when director Don Mancini returned the series to its roots with Curse of Chucky. Likewise, all signs point toward him continuing that trend with the much talked about Cult of Chucky.
That being said, it’s hard to argue against Mancini having a very clear vision, thus making him the right hand to guide our favorite Good Guy for the foreseeable future. And by bringing back Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay and keeping series stalwart Jennifer Tilly around, he’s certainly doing a fine job of staying on course.
But what may be most exciting of all is hearing that his brain seems to be packed with a myriad of ideas as to where to take Chucky next. Here’s what Mancini himself...

Those of you out there who happen to be fans of the Child’s Play film franchise will likely agree with me in saying that aside from Brad Dourif’s legendary performance as the voice of everyone’s favorite Good Guy, the first movie may not have worked as well had they not found a child actor to ably pull of the role of Andy Barclay.
Luckily, Alex Vincent stepped up to the plate, making his character believable and capping it off with a one-liner that would make even the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Bond proud. And, most fortunate for enduring lovers of the series, Vincent has since returned to reprise the role in a surprising post-credits scene in Curse of Chucky that’ll be expanded upon in the upcoming Cult of Chucky.

In 2003, Freddy vs. Jason arrived in cinemas, a film that I’d credit for kicking off the versus-style motif of Hollywood crossovers. In the time since, we’ve received other mashups such as Alien vs. Predator, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and, perhaps the biggest movie to be produced within our lifetime, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid.
Like any of us, those seated in prestigious positions can also dream. As it so happens, Don Mancini, director of the upcoming Cult of Chucky and the man responsible for bringing the Child’s Play film franchise back to its roots, has a cool idea for a crossover. And when you really think about it, it kind of makes sense.
Granted, pitting Freddy against Jason was a no-brainer because they’re both titans in the horror genre, but Mancini would like to see something he calls “Child’s Play on Elm Street.” When...

If you haven’t quite had your fix of killer dolls after this morning’s deluge of creepy stills for Annabelle: Creation, we’ve got you covered.
The folks over at Bloody Disgusting have relayed the latest action shot for Cult of Chucky and unsurprisingly, it’s drenched in blood. Not only that, but it also heralds the return of Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) – albeit in doll form. Not seen in the possessed form since 2004, Tilly has since made appearances across Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, and Curse of Chucky, and is effectively a fixture of the Child’s Play franchise.
And at least based on this new still, Tiffany hasn’t lost her appetite for carnage. Sitting comfortably in the back of a blood-drenched vehicle, Jennifer Tilly’s pint-sized doppelgänger is smiling from plastic ear to plastic ear, and we can only imagine what poor soul has fallen pray...

Whether it’s Call of Duty or The Fast and the Furious, space is often floated as a potential setting for ‘Title X’ when all other options have been exhausted, and the creators involved want to inject some excitement into a series that is beginning to spin its wheels.
More often than not, in the film industry that proposition is often tossed around as something an in-joke – a stupidly ambitious pitch that’s only made in jest. And though that may be true, that hasn’t stopped Don Mancini from proposing that Chucky’s next outing should catapult the pint-sized Devil Doll into the cosmos. Keep in mind that there’s a very good chance that Mancini is merely toying with the audience here, after he spoke to The Movie Crypt (via Bloody Disgusting) to promote the upcoming release of Cult of Chucky, the seventh instalment in the long-running slasher saga.

Considering that we live in an era populated by remakes and reboots – especially in the horror genre – you really have to tip your hat to the Child’s Play franchise, which, for the most part, has kept true to the same continuity all these years. Sure, there were a few tongue-in-cheek detours that remain cult favorites, but to not completely start from scratch with recent installments is indeed an extreme rarity these days.
I guess you could say 2013’s Curse of Chucky was a clean slate of sorts, but it returned the franchise to its roots, a trend we saw as continuing with the freshly dropped first trailer for Cult of Chucky. As exciting as that was, today we’re offered an even deeper look at Don Mancini’s twisted vision via a red band preview, which can be viewed up above.

The Cult of Chucky begins its reign of terror in the horrifying first teaser trailer for Don Mancini’s direct-to-video slasher.
Angled as the seventh installment in the famous Child’s Play franchise (and the goriest, if Mancini is to be believed), Cult of Chucky is a direct continuation of the 2013 cult hit Curse of Chucky, when horror fans were introduced to Fiona Dourif’s character, Nica Pierce.
Four years on from her first dalliance with the demonic doll and Pierce now finds herself locked up in a mental institution, wherein she’s forced to undergo therapy that includes cradling an eerily life-like Good Guy doll to help fend off Ptsd. It’s the stuff of nightmares, really, and if anything, Dourif’s haunted lead is only reminded of Chucky’s looming presence. Directing from his own script, Don Mancini’s horror flick also pays homage to the underlying legacy...

Back in 1998, my bestie Martin and I headed off to Sutton Uci (now Sutton Empire) to check out brand new horror movie Bridge of Chucky – evidently the audience theatrically for this one wasn’t going to be too huge as the only showing of the movie was at 23:30 but that didn’t stop us heading along to find out who Chucky had in his crosshairs this time.
Now, 19 years on (so depressing!) we have another movie in the offing in the form of Cult Of Chucky which sees the demonic doll back to haunt us once again showing that franchise (and Chucky) will not die.

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

With the Blu-ray release of Assault On Precinct 13 in November comes perhaps the best of said themes, as we delve into a Santa’s sack of cinematic treats.
Carpenter’s 1976 budget siege thriller, inspired by classic western Rio Bravo and George Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, follows the skeleton staff of a police station about to close for the last time as they and the few remaining prisoners fend off a marauding band of, erm, marauders.
