Nelson Mandela, the iconic anti-apartheid leader who went from 27 years as a political prisoner to eventually becoming the first president of a free South Africa, will be the subject of the 30-hour scripted TV series “Mandela.” The project is currently the works at writer/producer Josh Wakely’s Grace: A Storytelling Company shingle.
Wakely has secured the TV series life rights to the late Mandela via House of Mandela Entertainment, the media arm of the Mandela estate. Wakely will executive produce and write “Mandela,” along with South African writer/director Kagiso Lediga (“Queen Sono”) and producer Kweku Mandela (who is also Nelson Mandela’s grandson).
The project, which Wakely compares to a multi-season saga in the vein of Netflix’s “The Crown,” will center on Mandela’s life as he was sent to prison while aiming to end apartheid, the system of institutional racism and segregation that was administered in South Africa for generations.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Chris comes down the stairs with "The Exorcist" Director's Cut.)
In 2000, "The Exorcist" returned to theaters. But this wasn't the version of the film horror hounds were used to — it was a director's cut billed as "The Version You've Never Seen." This cut restored several deleted scenes to the film, including a new ending which lightens the mood a bit (whether or not that's a good thing is up to you; many critics found the additional ending scene superfluous). Most of the new additions to the film are small — a subliminal face here and there. But there's one particular restored scene that's become the stuff of legend: the infamous spider walk.

Isaiah (Kofi Siriboe) and Stevie (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) don’t meet cute in “Really Love.” They meet with understated beauty, at a time in their lives when ardor and connection will be tested by the dreams each has harbored for much of their lives. He’s a talented painter watching other art school classmates get representation and gallery shows. She’s in the last year of law school and sure to be courted by elite firms.
For her debut feature, director Angel Kristi Williams doesn’t make it easy on her protagonists. And her deliberateness of vision, trust in story and clear-eyed empathy suggest she’s a talent to keep track of. For their restrained yet smoldering performances, the two lead actors received a special jury acting prize at the 2020 SXSW film festival.

In an unusual show of consensus, reduced-price titles, a new PVOD title, and several independent films dominated all streaming charts. “Godzilla vs. Kong,” still #5 in theaters in its eighth weekend, followed its initial 31-day HBO Max play with PVOD availability. It placed #1 on both revenue sites, and was #3 and the best high-price title at those who rank by transactions.
The good news is “Godzilla vs. Kong” is thriving on PVOD at $19.99. The bad news is an awful lot of people don’t seem to be aware of the value of HBO Max, where it costs $14.99 for one month and allowed customers to see the same film in March. It suggests an ongoing marketing issue and, at the start of 2022, there will be another challenge when HBO Max customers realize that Warner Bros. titles no longer play day and date with theaters.

The summer movie season continues on its road to recovery and normalcy, with four new wide releases hitting screens. Still, studios are holding back their big guns for now, as roughly one-third of theaters remain closed and capacity restrictions remain in place at many locations. The past few months have shown promising box office results from films such as Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, but it may still take some time before the box office returns to its former glory, with the major test coming over Memorial Day weekend when Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II face off.
Coming in the first place this weekend will likely be Spiral, the ninth entry in the Saw franchise, this time with a new take that puts Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles. Rock also executive produced and worked on the story for the film,...

Making his directorial debut, Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz is both behind and in front of the camera for Georgetown, a real-life story of secrets and scheming in Washington. Waltz stars as Ulrich Mott, a charismatic social-climber who brings the who’s-who of D.C. into his orbit, including Vanessa Redgrave’s Elsa Brecht. The two get married, and eventually Elsa ends up dead, prompting serious suspicion from her daughter Amanda (Annette Bening) about Ulrich’s involvement.
Penned by Tony-winner playwright David Auburn (Proof) and based on the New York Times article “The Worst Marriage in Georgetown” by Franklin Foer, the film was shot in 2017 and premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival to mixed reviews. Ahead of Waltz’s forthcoming performances in The French Dispatch and No Time to Die, his directorial debut will now finally be released in the United States on May 14 followed by a VOD premiere on May 19.

"Try to get to know him before you condemn him!" Paramount Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie political drama titled Georgetown, marking the feature directorial debut of Oscar-winning Austrian actor Christoph Waltz. This already premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival a few years ago, but has been waiting for a release ever since. It never played at any other festivals which is a bad sign, on top of the release delay. Waltz also stars in the film as Ulrich Mott, an ambitious social climber, who marries a wealthy widow in Washington D.C. in order to mix with powerful political players... and get his hands on her money. The film's impressive cast features Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening, Corey Hawkins, Laura de Carteret, Dan Lett, and Amin Bhatia. This seems like such a sleazy story, but I guess that's the point, examining the lengths some people go to...

One of the more intriguing titles of this year’s Berlin Film Festival is the new Johnny Depp true life drama, Minamata in which Depp plays the famous Life magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith who in 1971 undertook the most challenging and important subject of his career in travelling to the small Japanese village of Minamata which had been ravaged by an outbreak of Mercury Poisoning due to gross negligence by Japan’s Chisso Corporation, the government itself, and even the Yakuza. The important and heartbreaking movie, which I caught at CAA in Los Angeles a few days ago, documents Smith’s efforts to chronicle the tragic effects of the disease and the Minamata inhabitants’ heroic efforts to fight back. As the film shows, Smith was an enormously gifted, if difficult personality, and had to practically beg a reluctant Life to give him this opportunity, but the results were eye-opening and...

Corey Hawkins (In the Heights) is set for a leading role alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Zackary Momoh and Uzo Aduba in HBO Max’s Americanah, the limited series based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-selling novel of the same name.
Americanah tells the epic story of Ifemelu (Nyong’o), a young, beautiful, self-assured woman raised in Nigeria, who as a teenager falls in love with her classmate Obinze (Momoh). Living in a military-ruled country, they each depart for the west, with Ifemelu heading for America, where, despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be black. Christoph Waltz is set to star opposite Liam Hemsworth in an untitled action-thriller series which is in the works at Quibi. Waltz is the latest name to join the Jeffrey Katzenberg-founded short form content company.
The series centers around Dodge Maynard (Hemsworth) who, desperate to take care of his pregnant wife before a terminal illness can take his life, accepts an offer to participate in a deadly game where he soon discovers that he’s not the hunter, but the prey. Waltz will play the character of Miles Sellers. The series explores the limits of how far someone would go to fight for their life and their family.
Produced by CBS Television Studios for Quibi, the series is being penned by former “Sopranos” writer Nick Santora and directed by regular “Mad Men” helmer Phil Abraham. Both will serve as executive producers, while Gordon Gray and Silver Reel Pictures are on board as non-writing EPs.

The rumours surrounding the return of Christoph Waltz as ‘Bond’ villain Blofeld to ‘Bond 25’ seem to have been confirmed with sightings of Waltz spotted on the Pinewood Studios lot during filming.

In the new film, Bond is living a tranquil retirement life in Jamaica – one that’s interrupted when Us agent Felix Leiter shows up and asks for help to rescue a kidnapped scientist which puts Bond on the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Andrew Levitas has carved out a unique place in the art world, having used his considerable skills across multiple creative platforms. A filmmaker, painter, sculptor, producer, writer, actor and photographer, Levitas is also the founder of Metalwork Pictures, a media production company that develops and produces original content, including his 2014 directorial debut, “Lullaby,” as well as “Georgetown,” “Last Moment of Clarity,” “The White Crow,” “Farming,” “Flower,” “At Any Price,” “Affluenza” and “The Art of Getting By.” When it comes to producing, Levitas says, “It’s purely about supporting other like-minded artists, specifically those who seek essential truth, and engage with their material in a very particular way. Beyond that, joy of creation is essential.”
Levitas is currently in production on “Minamata,” pictured above, starring Johnny Depp, Bill Nighy and Hiroyuki Sanada. HanWay is handling sales. The film, set in 1971, follows Life magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith’s journey to the...

With Georgetown, Christoph Waltz joins the steady stream of actors making their transition behind the camera to make their highly anticipated directorial debuts. And indeed, the two-time Oscar winner seems like the perfect candidate to make that leap: a character actor with a keen eye for a riveting script and larger-than-life characters. But unfortunately, despite […]

What must it be like to play poker with Christoph Waltz? For all the actor’s charms, subtlety doesn’t seem to come naturally to him. Granted, Waltz was a revelation as the unnervingly appealing Nazi colonel in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” but in most of the roles that have followed, he’s tipped his hand with each exaggerated expression, working his elastic face like some kind of live-action cartoon character.
That’s an especially odd approach to take in playing a con artist, as he does in “Georgetown,” since no one in the real world would believe a man who telegraphs his true intentions quite so transparently. But seeing as this is also Waltz’s directorial debut, signed under the name “C. Waltz,” he can surround himself with similarly vaudevillian performances from otherwise excellent actors — including Vanessa Redgrave and Annette Bening — whose natural tendency has been to underplay their characters’ emotions.

It isn’t especially difficult to explain pop culture’s recent obsession with liars and con artists, but Christoph Waltz’s “Georgetown” suggests that Washington D.C. was a magnet for megalomaniacal grifters long before Donald Trump reduced the property value of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Power has a funny way of attracting the most pathetic of people, and this half-formed, almost true dark comedy is nothing if not a story about the most pathetic of people. Alas, it stops a bit short of being anything else.
Based on Franklin Foer’s 2012 New York Times article “The Worst Marriage in Georgetown,” Waltz’s directorial debut — in which he credits himself as “C. Waltz” — opens with a winking title card that insists “this film does not claim to be the truth,” and spends the rest of its run time wobbling on a knife’s edge between different kinds of discomfort. Waltz himself plays Ulrich Mott,...

The fate of The Walking Dead’s mysteriously-absent major character, Heath, is finally confirmed and it connects to the story of Season 9.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the current episodes of The Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead viewers are, by now, accustomed to glaring divergences from its comic book source material, especially in the wake of – amongst many other things – the recent departure of the franchise’s protagonist, Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes. However, one divergence that hasn’t been discussed for some time is the mysterious departure of Corey Hawkins’s Heath, a major player in the comic book series, who saw his long-anticipated television tenure disappointingly cut short. Well, the truth about said departure has, at last, been confirmed. In the very least, it’s intriguing.
Angela Kang, who took over showrunner duties on The Walking Dead this season, confirms the fate of Heath in an interview with Business Insider.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors has been wrestling with something they promised to do at that fateful October 14th meeting when they stripped accused sexual predator Harvey Weinstein of his Academy membership. Questions have been raised about how to handle other existing Academy members accused of misconduct, from Brett Ratner, Kevin Spacey and Bill Cosby to Stephen Collins and Roman Polanski, who have both admitted to having inappropriate sex with a minor, as well as future allegations.
Following Tuesday night’s Board meeting, Academy CEO Dawn Hudson sent out an email to Academy members, below. The Board has approved the Standards of Conduct, proposed by a special task force that has assembled procedures for dealing with allegations of misconduct in the Academy ranks. Monday’s Brett Ratner investigation in the The Los Angeles Times, with testimonials from a half-dozen women accusing him of sexual harassment, continued what’s become a familiar pattern. First-hand accounts. Apologies and/or denials. And now, the career blowback begins.
Depending on who you ask, Warner Bros. cut ties with Ratner late this afternoon — or to hear Ratner tell it, he made the decision. Ratner said in a statement, “In light of the allegations being made, I am choosing to personally step away from all Warner Bros.-related activities. I don’t want to have any possible negative impact to the studio until these personal issues are resolved.”
The news came after Ratner lost his biopic on former Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner. “We are putting all further development of our projects with RatPac Entertainment on hold until we are able to review the situation further,” a Playboy Enterprises spokesman told The Wrap today.
