Pharrell Williams has set a gospel series, titled “Voices of Fire,” at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The show will follow the musician’s uncle, Bishop Ezekiel Williams, a well-respected musical genius in the area of Hampton Roads, Va., which includes Pharrell’s hometown of Virginia Beach. The unscripted series will center around the town, as it builds one of the world’s most inspiring gospel choirs.
The bishop and his core team of influential gospel leaders will venture out into Hampton Roads to find undiscovered talent, and with the belief that diverse backstories can give their collective voice a greater meaning, the group will be searching for people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.
Pharrell and the bishop announced news of the series during a conversation on Sunday at Essence Festival, which went digital this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Love is patient, love is kind, love is blind?! It's been less than four months since Netflix aired the reunion for their massive hit series titled Love Is Blind. And while some couples formed from the series are living their best lives, others aren't as lucky in the romance department. Earlier this week, E! News learned that Lauren "Lc" Chamblin and Mark Cuevas had called it quits after rekindling things off the show. "Mark and I were casually dating, but talked about remaining exclusive, especially because of Covid-19, but that's over now," Lc shared in a statement to E! News. "The main thing I learned from the show and past relationships is that I...

In Love Is Blind, Chris Coelen engineered a social experiment, designed to answer major two questions: Can love conquer all? And can people fall in love without ever seeing one another?
Hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, the Netflix reality series follows 30 men and women that hope to be loved for who they are on the inside, as they engage in a novel approach to dating. Over the course of 10 days, the singles go on a series of speed dates within “pods”—private chambers linked by an opaque wall—which allow for intimate conversation. Free from the distractions of physical appearance, and the physical world as a whole, they are able to engage in flirtation and courtship on the basis of a deeper kind of connection.
As the founding CEO of Kinetic Content, Coelen has dabbled in social experiments before, with series such as Married at First Sight. “We’ve...

“Love Is Blind” was not production designer Dave Edwards’ first foray into a reality relationship competition series that sought to walk its couples down the aisle; he previously worked on the reunions for Lifetime’s “Married at First Sight.” But the Netflix series provided new challenges: He had to design rooms that looked good enough for TV but also provided function and comfort for the contestants who spent hours within them, chatting with their potential true loves on the other side of a shared wall.
What were some of your visual references for the pods in “Love Is Blind”?
“Ex Machina,” the film, was one of the inspirations for the director [Brian Smith] and Chris [Coelen, executive producer] and the lighting designer and myself for a lot of this because for the majority of “Ex Machina” you have little light and the darkness as well, and we really wanted to play with that to add...

Netflix has greenlit two new unscripted dating shows, Variety has learned exclusively.
The new series further bolster Netflix’s lineup in the romance genre, following the success of breakout hits ‘Love Is Blind” and “Too Hot To Handle.”
“Indian Matchmaking,” which will debut on July 16, centers around couples paired by an elite Indian matchmaker. “Love on the Spectrum,” premiering July 22, focuses on young adults on the autism spectrum exploring the dating world.
Unlike “Love Is Blind” and “Too Hot To Handle,” both new shows are serialized, docuseries style formats that will follow several characters’ stories over the course of the season.
“Indian Matchmaking” and “Love on the Spectrum” will create a jam-packed summer of romance for Netflix, which just last week announced a new wedding show, “Say I Do,” from the creators of “Queer Eye,” which premieres on July 1. Rather than centering around a proposal like The Bachelor or a wedding like Love Is Blind, Netflix's Dating Around allows singles to focus on finding meaningful connections - from literal day one - with blind dates. Each episode follows one person as they go on five blind dates; all take place at the same restaurant, giving as much equal footing as possible. Now on its sophomore season, which is based in New Orleans, the single-and-ready-to-mingle cast includes Justin, Deva, Demi, Heather, Ben, and Brandon. Apart from awkward first-date banter, couples share past relationships, career goals, interests, and for some, a few goodnight kisses! If you haven't binged Dating Around season two yet, don't fret, because episodes are only half an hour. And if you're curious to see which season one couples made it past date number two, we have that info, too!

Dating shows have always been a guilty pleasure. Ever since the ’60s with “The Dating Game” and “The Newlywed Game,” audiences have been hooked. But in the modern viewing era, only one franchise has stuck in viewers’ hearts.
“The Bachelor” debuted in 2002, and nearly two decades later, no other show has managed to break through. But almost 20 years after the ABC franchise premiered, romantic reality shows are again having a moment.
Now, in our shelter-at-home world, audiences have found a trio of Netflix shows: the social experiment series “The Circle”; “Love Is Blind,” viewed in more than 30 million households in its first two months; and the raunchier “Too Hot to Handle,” which challenges horny 20-somethings to refrain from engaging in sexual activity while frolicking around a sun-drenched resort in swimsuits.
“We’ve been able to carve out a realistic and reflective way of how society is,” says Brandon Riegg, who heads unscripted originals at Netflix,...

Reality dating shows have been a guilty pleasure among audiences for decades, but a common critique of the fan-favorite genre is the romanticized (for lack of a better term) idea of dating on national television.
Aside from cameras following contestants looking for love — or fame? — in recent years, dating shows have been scrutinized for their choice in contestants. In a day in age where hit shows give lucrative platforms to reality stars, viewers question whether casts made up of genetically-blessed twenty-somethings are searching for a soulmate or a social media sponsorship deal.
With “Labor of Love,” Fox is hoping to avoid unrealistic dating show tropes by casting the most mature set of contestants in recent broadcast history with a 41-year-old established lead, Kristy Katzmann, and a group of male suitors ranging from the age of 36 to 46.

Netflix has begun to make itself known more aggressively as a player in the world of unscripted TV, dropping the cheaply-made and goofily tawdry “The Circle,” “Love Is Blind,” and “Too Hot to Handle” all since the year began. Now, the streamer encroaches on — and threatens to do better than — networks with less agility, and perhaps just a bit more shame.
It’s comforting, then, that Fox — the originator of pure and uncut reality-tv spectacle some twenty years ago — still has some fight left. Following in the footsteps of “Temptation Island,” “Mr. Personality,” and “Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?” comes “Labor of Love,” a show whose relationship to its premise is less urgent than its desire to provide humorous uplift in the form of vicarious embarrassment. No pleasure is truly guilty, but this may come close; that it’s a pleasure all the same, though, is all an entertainment-starved viewer may need to hear.

Would you get engaged to someone you've never met face to face? That's the question Netflix asks with its new show Love Is Blind. The 10-part reality series, which is hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, follows various single people as they go through a series of dates without actually laying eyes on the other person. You'll just have to tune in to see! The first batch of episodes hit the streaming service on Feb. 13 (just in time for Valentine's Day), with another group of episodes rolling out on Feb. 20, and the two-hour finale airing on Feb. 27. If you're used to the usual variations on dating reality TV shows, Netflix might have an answer for you. Their new series Love Is Blind, created and hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, combines several elements of your typical dating show with a big twist: the contestants don't get to see each other face-to-face until after they've made a decision about their relationship. If the unusual premise has sparked your interest, here's the lowdown on how and when you can tune in.
Netflix is testing out a different kind of release strategy for Love Is Blind. For this show, however, the 10 episodes are being split up in three separate, staggered groups, according to People. First,...

Also on tap is the sophomore editions of the sci-fi series “Altered Carbon” and the crime drama “Narcos: Mexico.” And look for the long-awaited sequel “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You,” which continues the story from the teen romantic comedy that was one of the most streamed films of 2018.

The singles on Netflix’s new dating show “Love Is Blind” won’t be able to see the person they’re courting, but you can take a look them all right now, in the trailer. (Spoiler alert: They’re all hot.)
Hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, the serialized dating show follows singles as they date, form relationships and fall in love, all without ever laying eyes on the person they’re dating. The couples will finally see each other for the first time after getting engaged, with the cameras following them as they attempt to form a physical connection to match the emotional one in the days leading up to their wedding.
Thankfully, the couples’ chances are helped by the fact that they are, to reiterate, all hot.

Directors Andy Delaney and Monty Whitebloom’s “Love Is Blind” should perhaps be titled “Love Is Arbitrary.” There’s no reasoning to how and why love manifests or dissipates in relationships, in much the same way the film’s character motivations flip and flop as script convenience calls. who struggles to recognize the broken people who populate her purview. Her ability to see only what she wants directly correlates to the film’s selective reasoning when it comes to contrivance and cloying poignancy.
