A Journey Can Be Your Destiny
dickfluck-3370819 December 2019
In Episode 1 of this 2015 melodrama, the handsome, popular actor Ji Eun-ho walks from his dressing room onto the stage at a press conference, and a Q&A occurs.

Reporter: "What's the best thing about being famous?" Eun-ho: "It'll be easy to find the person I'm looking for."

Reporter: "Who are you looking for?" Eun-ho: "My fiancée."

Reporter: "What's her name?"

Before Eun-ho can answer that question, the story flashes back 20 years to when he was in high school and met and fell in love with Eun-dong, a girl in upper elementary school who had befriended him. By the end of Episode 1, Eun-dong has disappeared from his life, leaving him bereft and, unbeknownst to him, at the beginning of a long journey to find her.

That journey-their shared destiny-is at the heart of "This Is My Love." The journey will be long, winding, and filled with obstacles and mystery. In the language of '60s hippies, their journey will be "heavy." I found the series so heavy that I couldn't binge-watch the series. I needed a break from the tension now and then.

The two of them met-by accident, literally-when he was 15 and she was about 10, and they immediately formed a strong bond with each other. They swore allegiance to each other and sealed it with a handshake akin to a pinky swear.

Within days, however, that bond was torn when Eun-dong was orphaned by the death of her grandmother, adopted by a couple, and moved from her home in Chuncheon to Seoul. Eun-ho's twenty-year search for Eun-dong leads him to the press conference and his public declaration of his love for her. His search for Eun-dong immediately becomes a huge story in the media.

The characters, all played very well by an outstanding cast, include childhood friends and acquaintances of Eun-ho and Eun-dong; supportive parents and Eun-ho's sister; liars; and self-interested schemers.

The story of a twenty-year quest to find a loved one surely resonated with people on the Korean peninsula, which has been divided since 1945, when the Soviet Union and United States divided Korea along the 38th parallel and then occupied northern and southern portions, respectively. This division was to have been temporary, but it has endured for 74 years because Korea became-and still is-a pawn in the Cold War. Families with members on both sides of the divide have been separated from their loved ones for generations.

The excellent script, direction, and acting will keep you watching and wondering what will happen to the two lovers, whose lives and story play out in newspapers, on television, and in Eun-ho's book about his search for Eun-dong. I hope that you find this series as enjoyable as I did.

Beautiful Love Story
grow38629 January 2019
I found this series on Netflix and it is re titled "This Is My Love". I enjoyed the 16 episodes a lot. The male lead, Ju Jin Mo, is a great actor who is able to convey his emotions very well. The scenes portraying the hero and heroines in their youth and as young adults were wonderful too.

My first k-drama, and stll one of the best
from-nsj428 January 2019
If you don't want to watch a love story, then don't watch this drama, because it's a pure example of the genre. It's about two people who meet as young teenagers, then are separated. The guy spends the next 20 years looking for his lost love. The lead characters are played by 3 different actors/actresses in 3 time periods ten years apart.

The adult actress is Kim Sa Rang, who was Miss Korea in 2000, and is still a beauty.. It's a really sweet story, one that hooked me on k-drama, and if you like this genre, you should like the series. Reviews on other sites were much more positive than the ones on this site.

Sad, Sad, Unfortunate Love Story
PalmBeachG27 November 2022
Giving 9 stars because I really enjoyed it. I usually avoid watching dramas that involve children paternity rights however when I started this I didn't realize it had that element in the theme or I wouldn't have watched it. I watched the whole drama anyway once I found out since I was already into it and it was bothering me the whole time that our main male lead got robbed of raising his own son for 10 years. It is such a sad, sad unfortunate story but was glad to see how things turned out in the end. I was very disappointed in one element of the ending though - which is my reason for not giving this 10 stars - the son said that the next time he saw his real birth father he would call him "DAD" and we never got to see that. I think that should have been included in the ending; the female lead could have walked up holding his hand and he could have called him dad or something along those lines. This important part was left unfinished and left the viewer with a hole in their heart.

I have really fallen for Korean dramas! I first watched Marriage Contract which was sad but excellent. This series was even better and soooo romantic! Lovely characters, great story line and I love that there is no objectionable content. Highly recommend!

I like the love scene on the stairs
lmerana17 October 2019
I think the story was simple but the acting pf the characters seem realistic. I like the love scene on the stairs because it is so sweet and I can feel their emotions. I feel bad for the other guy though. It is very realistic to choose the one you love than the one you pity, but still it hurts.

Superb acting overcoming not as strong of a story

Warning: Spoilers
All of the actors did a superb job with their roles. While admittedly, there are some holes in the story line, I was thoroughly entertained by the series. And while many Korean dramas really let me down with the endings, I was actually okay with this one. He chose to leave the relationship in order to give everyone time to heal having faith that their love would endure the test of time like it had the times prior. I think Korean dramas more consistently offer great acting and stories than American dramas that go on endlessly. While I sometimes wish that Korean dramas were a bit longer, it is far better that they end than the American ones which go on and on with the main characters jumping into bed with yet another character.

Content questionable
archergem-6454521 April 2018
I found the story difficult, to use the term, difficult to swallow. On the premise that a young man fell in love with such a young schoolgirl very questionable, and to pursue this 'love' to later in life I'm sure would give many an expert, psychologist a field day. The lead female character had my sympathy, as I felt she was manipulated to everyones ends. No, although well filmed and acted, I didn't feel good watching this drama, hence low rating

Good plot, exquisite acting skill
madbird-6124314 September 2018
My friend recommend this drama to me or i will not watch it. The female lead is not pretty is only the 2nd lead in secret garden. Male lead is a bit too fat. But turn out the male lead's acting is superb. Second male lead act equally good. To be a false and handicapped husband, his look is not kind of typical villian, but is a sick man that will arouse your sympatby. The 2 marks is deducted because i do not appreciate very much acting of female lead. Seems she is of the same expression for most of the time.

But overall it is still a splendid drama. The plot is creative and is not illogical. Once you begin you cannot stop seeing it.

So Much Potential Doesnt Quite Hit The Mark
ljansen-8768218 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Really wanted to like this series and have been generous with the rating.

It is carried entirely by the leading male characters with a special mention to Kim Tae-hoon, playing a deeply complex emotional paraplegic who has lied and schemed to get the FL to marry him with both sets of parents colluding in the marriage. It is a one sided love. Money and having a caregiver is clearly the motive here.

The actor that totally carries this series and makes it bearable is the ML, Ju Jin-Mo. An brilliant actor and the only reason I watched the series. Will watch anything he is in because he ACTS!

The FL and the secondary women are all terrible actresses. So bad that one literally cringed when they were in scenes for any length of time. JustoOne facial expression throughout. All need to go back to acting school.

The script had potential but needed a ton more work. The wardrobe and makeup both were tepid. The Director could have tried harder with the night scenes, but at least they recognised and showed clearly that the lead couple had a steamy bed life which was very loving. Although its time this sleeping in long sleeve winter clothes was done away with..smh.

Unsympathetic Characters and Melodrama Prevent This K-Drama From Being Memorable
spasek20 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I've been watching movies and television for over 40 years. I only recently got into some Japanese and Korean shows. One of the best that I've ever seen was "Descendants of the Sun."

My Love Eun Dong starts off with a great premise of a young high school boy who meets a 13-year-old girl who changes his life and how he lives it in a most profound way. It's clear that there is a love there, but she is suddenly forced to move away with her step-parents.

Ten years later, they meet again, and as they finally strike up a relationship, Eundong disappears, leaving Hyunsoo heartbroken and wondering what ever became of her.

Another ten years go by, and Hyunsoo, who is now one of Korea's top actors, uses his fame and influence to try and find Eundong.

What Hyunsoo and Eundong both end up discovering is a web of lies and fabrication by her current husband and his mother, as well as her own step-parents, because Eundong has lost her memory due to an accident, and so she is "given" false memories to maintain the charade of what really happened.

As the story gets going and becomes intriguing to the viewer to find out how Eundong will get her memory back and reunite with Hyunsoo, it suddenly collapses like a house of cards by unsympathetic and largely unlikable characters as well as too much melodrama. There's enough melodrama to fill three seasons of any regular show.

I will say that the performances are very well acted, despite nearly all of them playing characters with such weak and mostly unlikable personalities.

The stand out here is Jaeho. He is the only paraplegic character that I've ever seen who is about as cowardly and despicable as the worst villains in any TV show or movie that I have seen. The director tries to make the viewer sympathize with him, but he's devoid of anything approaching having "good" character qualities except for how he treats his son.

Eundong is a woman who is unable to truly think for herself and find her own power within. She makes decisions mostly based on what others tell her to do. She suffers from being abused by others largely because she has little self-respect and self-esteem. She's a woman with a big heart for everyone but herself.

And Hyunsoo, the character that we're supposed to sympathize with as much as Eundong, is an immature lout who barks orders at everyone, including Eundong. He's a 30+ year old man who acts like a teenager. He has fits of temper that would turn off any woman who had any self- respect. There are a number of scenes that make you wonder how Eundong could ever be with someone like that, but after seeing Eundong's own issues, it's not hard to understand.

The acting and production are well done, but the story and characters, which had so much potential, largely fail across the board. This isn't romantic or loving, as the story tries to make the viewer believe. This is about power and control, two things that have nothing to do with love. You wade through half of the series waiting for things to work out, and then finding at the end, a very empty and unfulfilling resolution, which causes the viewer to say, "I watched this whole thing for this?!"

If you want to see a Korean production worthy of your time with memorable, likable characters, and love that has integrity and value, I highly recommend "Descendants of the Sun." Don't waste your time with this one.

Story line takes a nose dive toward the end.
barrytookas25 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you would like an outline of the story "spasek" has a very well written review in the reviews here, but I would like to add my reasons for my intense dislike of how this drama played out. First up I have to say that I am so frustrated by the union of such brilliant acting with such poor script writing. Mostly the characters are thrust into such ridiculous scenarios with the actors doing their best to make it believable, but it just leaves me really dissatisfied following a story that has little realistic continuity. My biggest problem with this K drama and many others is that evil is often rewarded or gets a free pass while good people suffer and are often only consolation prize winners, rather than "truth wins in the end" type conclusions.

My Love Eun Dong was one of the worst offenders I have seen so far. Eun Dong is subject to pressure from uncaring foster parents and hopeful potential in-laws who despite her feelings to the contrary want her to marry a man she has zero interest in. She only goes out with him in the first place to avoid the angry beatings from her step father. The so called boyfriend is told by Eun Dong that she has reconnected with the love of her life, so he then deliberately drives his car at speed into a truck, disabling himself in the process, (that for the next 10 years he blames her for), and tricks her into marrying him as she now has lost her memory as a result of the accident. He then lies that the baby Eun Dong was carrying at the time was his, and spends the next 10 years raising him as his own. The big problem here is that when he gets found out, instead of coming clean, the lies continue and he publicly ruins the reputation of all the innocent parties. This is all pretty typical drama, but the lying scumbag boyfriend, suddenly becomes the hero because he was a good father to the boy while the real father was awol only due to the evil deeds the now husband has committed. Almost every confidant from the real father's Dad to his sister sympathies with the evil husband because he has been such a great father. It is like someone who steals a car and gets caught with it 10 years later and the Police go, " well he kept it serviced and washed for the past 10 years he is now the rightful owner now, we can't take it from him. Don't get me started on the evil "President" Who sleeps with the private detective who is recording every move of Hyunsoo, who she is obsessed with, but would happily destroy him completely rather than lose him to someone else. After destroying Hyunsoo's reputation, business and career, we are prompted to feel sympathy for her because she loved him so much.

Please do not waste time on what should be and could have been a real feel good drama, unless you find it satisfying to see evil prosper.
