After kicking off their pre-sales campaign last week for the upcoming TerrorBytes: The Evolution of Horror Gaming documentary, CreatorVC is bolstering the roster of participants for the five-part series. For those who need a refresher, Denis Dyack is the director of the 2002 Lovecraftian GameCube horror title Eternal Darkness, along with being the director of the first entry in the Legacy of Kain series, 1996’s Blood Omen. Being a homeowner can sometimes be its own little horror story. Just this week, I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with a wet spot that showed up on my wall after it rained and how to handle finding a black widow in my backyard garden. In real life, I’ve got to either do it myself or figure out who to call to get it taken care of. In the world of Home Safety Hotline, a new game from the developers of Night Signal, all you have to do is call the titular service for any problems your having around the house. The game casts you as an operator helping callers figure out what’s wrong with their house, ranging from mundane problems, like bees or termites, to issues of a more supernatural nature, like bed teeth and attic gnomes.
The gameplay loop is a relatively simple one.

Since breaking triumphantly onto the scene with her Emmy-nominated web series “Her Story,” writer and actress Jen Richards has quietly carved a niche as one of the most influential trans women working in Hollywood today. Not only did “Her Story” break ground as one of the first successful trans projects written by a trans creator, it centered not one but two trans women (Richards and Angelica Ross) in fully-realized narratives that did not show them experiencing pain or violence. The show also launched both women’s acting careers; Ross now stars on “Pose,” and Richards landed plum roles in ABC’s “Nashville,” NBC’s “Blindspot,” FX’s “Better Things,” and now — in her most substantial role yet — HBO’s brilliant sex comedy mini-series, “Mrs. Fletcher.”
Adapted from the bestselling novel by Tom Perrotta, who also created the series, “Mrs. Fletcher” boldly and hilariously charts the sexual awakening of a middle-aged mother named Eve Fletcher,...

Full Motion Video (Fmv) games are finally back and better than ever. But what took them so long?
This article is part of our History of PC Gaming series.
In 1983, Fmv games introduced us to the future. At a time when graphics were defined by sprites and basic polygonal models, the arrival of the first Fmv (Full Motion Video) games felt like a gigantic technological leap forward for the industry.
The genre’s earliest pioneers, Sega’s Astron Belt and Cinematronics’ Dragon’s Lair, showed how you could use new innovations, such as the LaserDisc, to integrate pre-recorded videos, often of real actors and sets, into games to make them more immersive. But these ‘80s arcade cabinets were just proofs of concept. By the early ‘90s, developers began to embrace the CD as their format of choice on PC and consoles, and the golden age of the Fmv genre was born.

The follow-up to the excellent Her Story, Telling Lies, is more ambitious and riveting than its predecessor.
Back in 2015, Sam Barlow’s Her Story broke new ground with its investigative gameplay, which tasked the player with watching interrogation videos of a woman suspected of murder, digging up the truth of the alleged crime by using reason, deduction, and keen behavioral observation. The game won several awards for its innovative concept and engrossing narrative, and fans have been eagerly anticipating Barlow’s next project.
Releasing later this year, Telling Lies expands on Her Story’s formula in both scale and complexity, though the similarities are strictly conceptual -- a sequel this is not. You play as a woman who has come upon a confidential Nsa database containing surveillance videos that follow four people whose lives are intertwined in ways that are up to you to uncover. Release Date: June 27, 2019
Platform: PC (reviewed), PS4, Xbo, Switch
Developer: Frogwares

Genre: Action/Adventure
At its best, The Sinking City embodies the best of the greatest (or at least most notable) detective games of the last 10 years or so. It’s got the big budget and cinematic cases of L.A. Noire, the supernatural twists of Murdered: Soul Suspect, the attempts at non-linear deduction featured in Return of the Obra Dinn and Her Story, and it even throws in some Eternal Darkness-like insanity mechanics and Lovecraftian elements for good measure.
Sadly, The Sinking City ultimately feels like watching the top 10 episodes of a seven-season series you’ve never seen before. You get all the highlights, but a weak underlying structure ensures that few of...

After Nipsey Hussle died, Yg spoke at his memorial at the Staples Center, called him “black motherfucking Jesus” during an emotional Coachella set, and delayed the release of his own album. Their friendship was a close one that transcended gang ties; they spoke truth to power on the defining political protest song of our time, “Fdt,” a mafioso g-funk middle-fingers-raised eruption of disbelieving rage that combined Yg’s knack for agitation with Nipsey’s view that life for black folks in South Central is a marathon test of never-ending endurance.

Sam Barlow is a writer and game designer perhaps best known for his interactive movie Her Story, a murder mystery told entirely through police interrogation clips that was released in 2015. In it, viewers investigate a crime by searching and sorting through a database of videos, trying to piece together what happened and why. Her Story's dark, fragmented narrative proved to be an instant success for Barlow, receiving rave reviews and selling hundreds of thousands of copies almost overnight. Four years later, Barlow is set to release his next interactive opus, Telling Lies, a far more expansive movie game produced in partnership with Annapurna Interactive, the games imprint of Annapurna Films, known for producing some of Hollywood's biggest indies. And like Her Story, Telling Lies...

Telling Lies will try to build upon the brilliant Her Story with help from this cast.
Writer/designer Sam Barlow and Annapurna Interactive are teaming up to bring us a spiritual successor to the revolutionary indie game, Her Story.
Called Telling Lies, this title is described as a "spiritual successor to Her Story." It deals with the process of how governments can collect feeds from various personal cameras across the world. Specifically, it focuses on a stolen Nsa hard drive that features footage players must sort through in order to connect the stories of several characters featured in the footage. It will be a much larger game than Her Story, and it seems that it might lack the simple "hook" of the original's murder story. Instead, the draw will be discovering why all these people matter.

United Talent Agency (UTA) is expanding its foothold in the video game industry. The talent agency just acquired two esports companies — talent agency Press X and management company Everyday Influencers — it announced on Wednesday.
The acquisitions will add 90 top esports athletes and streamers to UTA’s portfolio, including “League of Legends” stars Aphromoo and sOAZ, along with streamers Imaqtpie, Pokimane, and Disguised Toast. This reportedly makes UTA the only talent and entertainment company currently representing both esports talent and streamers, as well as game developers.
“As we identify and adopt early trends within the digital ecosystem, we recognized that the acquisition of Press X and Everyday Influencers would be a forward-looking opportunity for us,” said UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer. “The gaming sector is projected to reach over $135 billion this year and esports and streaming are critical components of any strategy for growth. More than two years after it was first announced, an interactive program based on a 35-year-old film is taking shape. Eko, a media company known for the branching paths and viewer choices that define its videos, has shared the trailer for WarGames, a digital reimagining of the 1983 movie of the same name.
In the 1983 version of WarGames, a teenage wunderkind portrayed by Matthew Broderick inadvertently wreaks havoc at Norad after breaking into a supercomputer. Eko's modern take on that plot will update the original concept by linking it to current events. The project's trailer refers to recent hacking scandals, such as those that targeted Yahoo and Equifax, while using foreboding images to hint at its own fictional brand of cyberwarfare.
Eko inked a deal with MGM, which owns the rights to WarGames, back in 2015. At the time, the interactive media company was still known as Interlude, but it has since changed its name.

In October 2009, Kater Gordon’s writing career came to a sudden end. In the space of a year, she went from Matt Weiner’s personal assistant on “Mad Men” to his Emmy-winning co-writer of the season finale. Then, less than a month after standing next to Weiner on the Nokia Theatre stage, she was fired. Or, as a show insider put it: “Matt has reluctantly decided that their relationship has reached its full potential.” That awkward rationale highlighted the “Mad Men” narrative: It was Weiner’s show, and his whims were law.
“Mad Men” continued for six more critically lauded seasons as Gordon faded from the news cycle and from the industry. Now imagine that story in 2017, with Gordon coming forward with her sexual harassment accusations against Weiner. Her story would have legs; he would be forced to deal with the charges, Peak TV be damned. All of which suggests...

Demi Lovato Rocks 2017 AMAs Red Carpet With History-Making Transgender Politician Danica Roem: Pics!
Demi Lovato made a statement in more ways than one at the 2017 American Music Awards on Sunday night! The 25-year-old singer destroyed the stage with her hater-renouncing performance of “Sorry Not Sorry.”
But before she shut down the show, Lovato took a stance on the red carpet, bringing Danica Roem as her date. Roem made history earlier this month in Virginia by becoming the first transgender legislator.

Joy Bryant is coming forward to say “me too” — for both herself and her mom.
The Parenthood star, 43, penned an emotional essay for Lenny Letter, revealing that she was born after her mother, Joyce, was sexually assaulted.
“On October 18, 1974, Joyce gave birth to me, not in love but in shame, after hiding her pregnancy from my grandmother for six months,” she wrote. “I am the product of a fifteen-year-old girl and an older man she knew.”
Bryant continued, “It doesn’t matter how or why or when. It happened, and with both my mother and my father dead, I’ll never know the specifics.

Disney has ended a ban against the Los Angeles Times’ film critics following extreme backlash from film critic groups, news organizations, directors, and more. The Los Angeles Times published a two-part investigation in September about Disney’s business ties with Anaheim, which included a look at the company’s protection from future taxes and its effect on local elections, among other topics. Disney responded by blacklisting the newspaper. The Times informed readers the ban was the reason it did not get early screening access to “Thor: Ragnarok.”

Before Glenn Whipp broke the story of James Toback’s serial sexual harassment with testimonies from 31 women, there was “Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson’s Twitter feed. He has nearly 67,000 followers who love his films as well as his passionate takedowns of sexism. When the Harvey Weinstein story first broke in early October, Derrickson cheered on the women who told their stories and the journalists who reported them — and soon he received a Dm from a follower, actress Selma Blair, who had a Toback story to tell.
Derrickson is good friends with Glenn Whipp, a longtime entertainment reporter at the paper. “[Blair] was scared, because she’s a single mother, and she didn’t want to be sued,” Whipp said in an interview with IndieWire on November 3. “With the Times, we can’t offer legal protection, but typically what happens is that the news organization — not the individual — is sued, and...

The Jackson siblings are celebrating Halloween in style.
On Friday, Paris Jackson and her older brother Prince made a rare joint appearance on the red carpet while wearing Halloween costumes.
The pair stepped out together at the Heal La and Tlk Fusion Present the 2nd Annual Costume for a Cause at the Jackson family home in Encino, California.
Paris, 19, wore a plush purple dragon onesie with matching purple slippers and accessorized with some white face paint. Meanwhile, her 20-year-old brother wore a costume that was not so easily identifiable: a full-body black-and-white unitard which was covered in a design that vaguely looked like hair.

During Hemsworth’s segment, held just before the premier of his Marvel film Thor:Ragnorak, Damon slowly popped his head in view of the camera next to Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo and the film’s director Taika Waititi, in the backstage area of the show.
As the crowd began to scream and applaud, Kimmel joked, saying, “It’s the mighty Thor not the muddy bore, so maybe take a walk!

Way back in Murder House, I praised American Horror Story for the show's penchant to introduce some kind of plot contrivance, then immediately follow up on it. There weren't a lot of dragged-out elements; something was introduced, then it was followed up on, and that was basically how most of the season went. Pay-offs weren't delayed, but there was a continual process of setting up dominoes, then toppling them, and setting up more dominoes that drove the first season forward all the way until the ending (which I maintain was satisfying, particularly given how some seasons have sputtered to a halt).

Tempestad has been selected as Mexico’s official entry to the 90th Academy Awards in the foreign-language film category, and was also recently nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Documentary. It was also the winner of the Best Documentary at the last edition of the Cinema Tropical Awards, and its Dp Ernesto Pardo was nominated for an American Society of Cinematographers Award.
Its U.S. theatrical premiere is October 20 at Anthology Film Archives who is co-presenting with Cinema Tropical, its distributor.
Utilizing the direct testimony of two women whose lives have been torn apart by the cartel-fueled terror racking Mexico in the 21st century, Tempestad is an impressionistic portrait — at once lyrical and shattering — of the human cost of the country’s lawlessness.
