At about 8:40 min in the captain calls for, "Battle stations. Torpedo and gun action." Rarely did submarines conduct an attack in this manner. Either a torpedo attack was made, in which case the call made was, "surface attack, torpedoes". Or guns were used and then the call was, "Surface attack, gun" meaning the deck gun. But attacking with a deck gun risked a great deal. The sub was put at greater risk as the enemy ship would most likely be closer (than with a torpedo attack) and often received much more fire than the sub could deliver plus, it put the deck/gun crew at risk and the gun crew had little or no cover. One of the notable characteristics of combat aboard a US submarine is that while the possibility of being killed was higher the probability of being injured was much lower. Not many submarine veterans wore Purple Hearts unless posthumously, if your submarine was hit it usually went down with all hands. So the first choice of weapons was nearly always torpedo unless the enemy vessel was to small to justify an expensive torpedo, they were out of torpedoes, or the enemy was lightly armed.
