In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at White Lung's Below, directed by Richard Bates Jr. Richard Bates Jr. made an impressive debut with Excision, a gory coming-of-age horror with a powerful central performance for AnnaLynne McCord. In it, a young woman who has an obsession with blood and bodies, goes very far to get back at the people who hurt her and save her sister. It plays like a mix between John Hughes and Jörg Buttgereit, and is exactly as fucked-up as that sentence seems to imply. While Richard Bates Jr. never really fulfilled the promise of Excision, films like Tone-deaf, Trash Fire and King Knight...

This Star Trek: Prodigy article contains spoilers through Episode 6.
For its first five episodes, Star Trek: Prodigy has mostly established its own identity, free and separate from the rest of the Trek franchise. Yes, a holographic Captain Janeway is an essential part of the crew, and yes, several episodes have touched on themes we’ve seen before. But, in terms of making nitty-gritty references to the larger canon of Trek, Prodigy has kept things pretty low-key. Until now…
After taking a brief hiatus, Prodigy Season 1 is back with episode 6 titled just “Kobayashi.” In it, Dal (Brett Gray) takes a 24th-century version of the famous Kobayashi Maru test, and in doing so, brings along some classic Trek characters for the ride. And, if some of these lines of the dialogue sounded familiar, they should have. With one exception, all the dialogue spoken by Dal’s greatest-hits holodeck crew comes from existing Star Trek episodes and films.

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 1.
Star Trek captains are like secret agents or base jumpers: they’re constantly trying to figure out how to not die while, at the same time, recognizing that the dangerous situation they’re in are partially their fault. In Star Trek: Discovery’s Season 4 premiere episode — “Kobayashi Maru” — Captain Michael Burnham is forced to relearn the most hardcore starship captain lesson in all of Trek: You can’t always win and you can’t always save everyone.
The basic idea of the Kobayashi Maru has its roots in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and since 1982 has created a warning for the entire Star Trek canon: Even if you think certain main characters are protected by plot armor, the non-win scenario is always there, threatening to make Trek get real. In Discovery’s “Kobayashi Maru,” this idea comes back in a big way,...

King Knight is the latest twisted yet brilliant movie from director Richard Bates Jr. I have been a big fan of his movies since his debut Excision almost ten years ago and thought there was no better time to remind people of his movies now that King Knight is doing the festival rounds.
First up is the aforementioned Excision. And what a debut it is, as we see ‘a disturbed high school student with aspirations of a career in medicine go to extremes to earn the approval of her controlling mother’. And that is only the tip of the iceberg. With a fantastically varied cast including AnnaLynne McCord, Ariel Winter, Malcom McDowell, Ray Wise, John Waters and Traci Lords it’s an expertly-crafted and grotesque story which you will not forget in a hurry.
The director’s second movie was completely different though. How you go from Excision to a...

What makes a good witch nowadays? A deep sense of spirituality and communion with nature? Devotion to a tight-knit group of like-minded free spirits? A successful Etsy shop and a sick set of Tarot cards? Remember how hard it was to beat computer games in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s? Just when you thought you were doing great on The Oregon Trail, your entire family would die of dysentery or some other floppy-disk catastrophe. Now, imagine what that gameplay would be like if it were set in the Star Trek universe, complete with old-school 8-bit computer graphics. You’ve just imagined a new web-based Star Trek game you can play right now, called, appropriately, Star Trek: Kobayashi Maru. In the new trailer for the game, George Takei calls it an “all you can eat buffet of pain.” He’s not wrong! The game is hard.
Free to play online, Star Trek: Kobayashi Maru has just been released from Scopely, the makers of the popular mobile game Star Trek: Fleet Command. To be clear, Kobayashi Maru is not an extension of Fleet Command. It’s web-based (not mobile) and,...

Interview: Director Orson Oblowitz on the Challenges and Lessons He Learned While Making Trespassers
Set to hit theaters in Los Angeles and New York tomorrow is Orson Oblowitz’s home invasion thriller Trespassers, which stars Angela Trimbur and Fairuza Balk (two of this writer’s favorite actresses), as well as Zach Avery, Janel Parrish,g and Jonathan Howard. The story follows two couples who Airbnb a house in the middle of the desert for a weekend to try to work out their respective issues, but things go horribly awry once they find themselves in a fight for their lives.
Daily Dead recently chatted with Trespassers director Orson Oblowitz about his initial interest in taking on the project, as well as the casting process, the challenges of creating the film’s visual style, how working on the project transformed him as an artist, and more.

Check out the trailer for Tone-Deaf, a new horror-comedy that shows what happens when you move next door to Robert Patrick.
It may have been a little while since the days of Terminator 2, but judging by the trailer for Tone-Deaf, it’s safe to say that you still do not want Robert Patrick coming after you. That’s at least the immediate takeaway after viewing what happens when Amanda Crew’s Olive moves next door to him.
In the new film, which played at the SXSW Film Festival, Crew portrays a young woman who after losing her job, and ending a tortuous relationship, goes in search of her “eat, pray, love” life moment by spending the weekend in a remote house. Secluded. In the countryside. Her only neighbor is Patrick’s Harvey. According to the synopsis, Harvey is an “old-fashioned” type of widower. One who might, just matter of factly,...

Trent Haaga has spent more than 15 years establishing himself in the realm of indie filmmaking. An esteemed graduate of Troma University, where he got his start as the writer on Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger 4, Haaga also penned Deadgirl and Cheap Thrills (and numerous other projects), and has made appearances in over 50 films to date. While Chop, a 2011 micro-budget horror comedy that has been grossly overlooked, may have been Haaga’s first-ever time in the director’s seat, it’s with his follow-up effort, 68 Kill, that he cements himself as a filmmaking force of nature who continues to build a strong foundation as a purveyor of cult cinema.
With a screenplay based on Bryan Smith’s book of the same name, 68 Kill introduces us to Chip (Matthew Gray Gubler), a trailer-dwelling nice guy who pumps sewage for a living and is completely infatuated with his out-of-control girlfriend, Liza (AnnaLynne McCord...

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

2016 was chock-full of big blockbuster releases, many of which either failed to make a sizable profit or were incredibly divisive among audiences. But out of the ashes rose a beautiful flower: the indie film. Yes, independent movies had a wonderful year, some even breaking per-theater records and making their way onto my favorites of 2016 list, which also includes a Denis Villeneuve film, a comic book series, collectibles, an excellent comprehensive horror documentary, and more.
Arrival: Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a beautiful take on language and how communication (or the lack of proper communication) can either doom or ensure our survival as human beings on this planet. The way Villeneuve tells a story is the perfect fit for a film like Arrival because its focus is small but the ideas are big, much like his previous works, Enemy, Sicario, and Prisoners.

The way Villeneuve tells a story is the perfect fit for a film like Arrival because its focus is small but the ideas are big, much like his previous works, Enemy, Sicario, and Prisoners.

This has easily been the hardest time I’ve ever had whittling down my favorite genre offerings for the year. I was fortunate to watch so many great movies throughout the course of the last 12 months (over 150—new and old!), and considering the quality of projects from both the studio and independent sides of the business was exceedingly high, I probably could have featured 20 films on this list, and still would have at least a dozen more I could recommend to fellow fans. 2016 was definitely one of the best recent years in horror and that’s pretty rad.
Beyond the realm of movies, horror also had a strong showing on TV, as it seems almost every single network these days has something of interest if you’re looking to immerse yourself in horror on the small screen. I was also fortunate enough to attend several amazing genre events in 2016, making...

2016 has been an exceptional all-around year for horror and sci-fi films—from the indie realm, we’ve been gifted with an enormous amount of brilliant cinematic stories throughout the past 12 months, and we even saw studios step up their game with an almost unprecedented amount of quality releases.
And along with this wealth of top-notch entertainment, we also saw an incredible number of fantastic female characters over the course of 2016—some heroic, some villainous, but all endlessly engaging in their own right. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to celebrate some of my favorite female performers from this year who gave us complex, interesting, and wholly compelling reasons to keep falling in love with genre cinema all over again (and again).

The question “why horror?” has been answered again and again. Studies have shown that, for willing participants, the voluntary release of fear is a healthy thing. What I have to say will not apply to everyone, then, because not everyone wants to be frightened. Many of us have recently been frightened, in a new, giant, eclipsing way. Those of us who love horror, then, have a greater need for it now.
For centuries, horror has been used as a spurning, inspiring emotion in art. Euripides uses terrifying imagery and events in two landmark works: the Oresteia, an examination of how a democratic justice system can conquer chaos, and The Bacchae, a bleakly violent warning to Athens as it approached catastrophic war. Far before such issues were accepted in public discussions, Oscar Wilde wrote of the fear of sexual aberrance in The Picture of Dorian Gray. Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle...

Calling your movie Trash Fire is a bold move. Not only does it practically dare critics to write snarky headlines, it lets any and all potential viewers know that this thing is probably not going to be very fun to watch. And while it doesn’t include any literal blazing piles of garbage, Trash Fire is spiteful and unpleasant from beginning to end, using every technique at its disposal—from stinging dialogue to grotesque prosthetics to morbid black comedy—to make the audience uncomfortable. But if you find hateful people spewing venom at one another punctuated by random acts of violence amusing, then buckle up, you sick fuck. We’re about to go on a ride.

Ever since 2012’s razor-sharp Excision (or 2008’s short film Excision, technically), writer/director Richard Bates Jr. has been slicing and dicing the horror genre with his pitch-black brand and stinging social takedowns. Excision tore into religion and social awkwardness, while Suburban Gothic employed a goofy paranormal detective – but Trash Fire only crescendos his darkest thoughts.
Humor pushes through vile, narcissistic, masochistic appropriations of false appearances, making Bates’ previous films look like kiddie content in comparison. No character bothers to filter their intentions, berating one another with the most toxic, hurtful dialogue that’ll have you laughing your way to Hell. Bates writes a painful arc that’s constantly torturing those caught in their own emotional inferno, holding onto signature quirks despite his most serious vision yet. It’s a lit fuse that never stops burning, until humanity is nothing but blown-away dream.
Adrian Grenier stars as Owen, whose life is a catastrophic disaster.

Like a Halloween moon that glistens deviously once a year, the first-ever Brooklyn Horror Film Festival came, saw and conquered New York City this past weekend. It was a heartwarming start for a little festival that blew up bigger than founder Justin Timms could have ever imagined, after a whopping 18 out of 22 screenings/events played to sold-out crowds. Not only did Erlingur Thoroddsen’s closing-night World Premiere of Child Eater sell out its first screening at Bushwick’s Syndicated Bar + Theater + Kitchen, but a late-night screening had to be scheduled based solely on demand (that too sold out). Not a bad start for some horror lovers who had nothing but a dream and the determination to succeed.
Trends in horror have recently embraced more arthouse, indie genre films, and this year’s Brooklyn Horror Film Festival was a perfect example of current standards. Timms’ opening night film, Mattie Do’s...
