Now that the "Scream" series is under the stewardship of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, we're heading into a new era of Ghostface, with the sixth movie leaving Woodsboro and Sidney Prescott behind, and slashing toward the Big Apple as the Carpenter sisters trying their hardest to start a new life after surviving the previous film. "Scream 5" (aka just "Scream") was structured as a passing of the torch from the franchise started by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson to the new writing/directing duo, and according to star Melissa Barrera, Ghostface has a major advantage given New York City's massive population. Barrera had told Collider that setting the story in NYC is "like 20 times more mortifying, it's awful," and cited the bustling energy as a major contributing factor:
"Because you also see how, in a city like New York City, everyone is kind of doing their own thing and someone is screaming for help,...

Director Advait Chandan is too literal in his adaptation of the 90s classic but finds a warmth and political honesty the original lacks
Bollywood megastar Aamir Khan’s “Hanks-ish likability” is tested to the limit by his new project with his Secret Superstar director Advait Chandan: a Hindi remake of Forrest Gump, late 20th-century Hollywood’s pre-eminent Rorschach blot. Sending Gump eastwards opens new channels of history and culture with screenwriter Atul Kulkarni swapping in golgappa for chocolate boxes. Yet the source has largely been swallowed whole: the CG feather, the sappy score, the picaresque storytelling and parkbench philosophy, the running with and without callipers. Assiduously replicating its predecessor’s strengths and weaknesses, the one thing it risks is that a three-word summary – Hindi Forrest Gump – would tell you all you ever needed to know about it.
Tweaks of emphasis do become apparent. Unloading his frankly exhausting life story onto Chandigarh’s unluckiest commuters,...

It’s beginning to look a lot like the holiday season, which means different things to different people. For some, it’s the opportunity to spend time with loved ones; for others, a chance to finally dig out Phil Spector’s Christmas album and stick it on repeat for the next month. The end of the year also means that it’s time to look back at the best releases of the past 12 months, which is where I come in. Below are nine of the best comic books to hit shelves in 2021, running the gamut from superhero movie source material to the memoir of one of America’s most beloved political figures of the past few decades.

Tom King and Jorge Fornes sat down with Watchmen producer Damon Lindelof to talk Rorschach the comic as part of DC’s Fandome, and they revealed that they’re taking a bit of a different angle on the story’s famed, and frequently misunderstood, vigilante.
King and Fornes’ Rorschach sounds like it is going to be explicitly political, which isn’t that much of a shift from the original Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons tale.
“Rorschach, as I find a lot of nerds know, but some don’t, it’s a parody character. It’s making fun of Steve Ditko’s creation, Mr. A and a little bit of the Question,” King said. “Steve Ditko, post-Stan Lee became enmeshed in the philosophy by Ayn Rand…basically the idea is, [with] Ayn Rand, there is good and there is bad and there’s nothing in between.”

Legends of Tomorrow ended season 5 with a little bit of space, and the promise of more space, and now the first big casting announcement of season 6 fulfills some of that promise.
At the Legends of Tomorrow panel at DC FanDome day 2, Lisseth Chavez was announced as joining the crew of the Waverider in the upcoming season. Chavez will be playing Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz, a tech whiz with a history of alien abduction who “believes she has the ability to communicate telepathically with aliens.” That part is quoted because one gets the sense that this is an open question that will be part of the mystery of Legends of Tomorrow season 6.
Chavez most recently played Officer Vanessa Rojas on Chicago P.D., and had roles on Murder in the First, The Fosters, and The Oa prior to that.

When DC announced in July it would be publishing a 12-issue comic book series by Tom King and Jorge Fornés titled Rorschach, set in the same universe as the iconic Watchmen — little more about the series was revealed.
A month out from the title’s debut, King is ready to share some more information — although, fittingly for a series that named after a psychological test where interpretation is key, just because more details are becoming apparent doesn’t necessarily mean that all the details are immediately more clear.

Did you think the continued explorations of the Watchmen universe were going to end with Dr. Manhattan and Superman explaining the DC Metaverse in the pages of Doomsday Clock or Angela Abar taking that step in HBO’s Watchmen TV series? Certainly not. And certainly not in a world that is somehow more confused and even more disordered than the one into which the original Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons was published in 1986.
While the HBO TV series was a true sequel to the Moore and Gibbons masterwork, the comic book Doomsday Clock by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank was more of an expansion, exploring what it would mean if the metaphorical influence of Watchmen on the comic book industry was made literal with Dr. Manhattan altering the course of events of the DC Universe itself. HBO's Watchmen continues to hint at the final fate of Nite Owl. We explain what it all means.
This article contains spoilers for Watchmen episode 3 and the book.
Watchmen episode 3, “She was Killed by Space Junk,” introduced two major characters from the original book in the form of Jean Smart’s FBI Agent Laurie Blake and Jeremy Irons’ Adrian Veidt (formerly known as the heroic Ozymandias). Ok, we’re cheating a little bit here since Veidt has been present since the very first episode and everybody watching knew who Irons was playing anyway, but this is the first time they’ve bothered to confirm his actual identity. But two others loom large over the proceedings, even in their absence. The first is Doctor Manhattan, who has at least shown up on a TV screen from time to time on the show. Jeremy Irons explains his take on Adrian Veidt on HBO's Watchmen, and we give some perspective on the history of Ozymandias.
This article contains major spoilers for Watchmen episode 3 and the book.
The worst kept secret in TV is finally out. Watchmen episode 3 reveals what most of the audience knew all along: Jeremy Irons is playing Adrian Veidt, formerly the superhero known as Ozymandias. While there’s still plenty of mystery surrounding Veidt on the HBO series, notably what project he’s working on while he’s toiling away in “captivity” in some unknown location, the official confirmation of his identity means that it’s time for some of the larger Watchmen pieces to start falling into place.
For those unfamiliar, Adrian Veidt was a member of the second generation of masked crimefighters in the Watchmen universe, first rising to prominence in the mid-1960s alongside the second Silk Spectre,...

Jean Smart tells us about what it's like playing FBI Agent Laurie Blake on HBO's Watchmen, a character with a history from the book.
This article contains major Watchmen spoilers, for both the book and episode 3 of the HBO series.
HBO’s Watchmen episode 3, “She Was Killed by Space Junk” introduces viewers to FBI Agent Laurie Blake, played by Jean Smart. But fans of the original Watchmen book will already be familiar with Agent Blake, formerly known as Laurie Juspeczyk, and better known as the masked adventurer known as the Silk Spectre. Watchmen readers might be surprised at how much Laurie has changed since we last saw her in 1985, but the show also has to establish her for audiences completely new to the character. One of those people was Smart herself, who wasn’t familiar with the world of Watchmen when she first got the role of Laurie Blake.

Recently, Regina King attended the San Francisco “Watchmen” premiere, organized by HBO, presenting Damon Lindelof‘s (“The Leftovers“) bold, highly-acclaimed adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons‘ iconic, comic book series. A thorough departure from the majority of the graphic novels, Lindelof’s envisions a new alternate universe in which white supremacy has seemingly risen to power since the Tulsa Race Riot (Black Wall Street Massacre) in 1921, using the Rorschach mask as a symbol of hatred, many of the heroes readers are used to seeing are mere, revisionist propagandistic stories of an era long gone, the police force now the modern-day Watchmen.

The episode’s title, “Martial Feats of Comanche Horsemanship” references the painting that the camera ominously lingers on in Judd’s house during the wake. That painting is a 1834 work by George Catlin, known for his depictions of Native Americans. Weirdly the episode title has rearranged the...

HBO's Watchmen television series has a plot that seems fairly straightforward: law enforcement and masked vigilantes are fighting against a white supremacist group called the Seventh Cavalry. But there's a brief scene in the premiere in which sea creatures inexplicably fall from the sky that clues us into the fact that there are some other, crazier things happening. When Angela (Regina King) and Topher (Dylan Schombing) are driving home from school, sirens go off, and she stops the car so they can be splattered with small, gooey squid for about 10 seconds. She then calmly scrapes them off her windshield, and they resume driving.
Wait, what?
Truth be told, we don't know much about the squid thing yet. In the graphic novel upon which the show is based, Adrian Veidt wants to unite the world against a common enemy, so he plots to make everyone think the world is being...

Last Sunday, HBO’s “Watchmen” recreated the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 in its first episode, boosting Google searches of the horrific event, one of the most devastating in American history.
There have been previous attempts to bring the Tulsa story to the screen – Oprah Winfrey, John Legend and Tim Story all had projects in the works at one time or another. But “Watchmen” is the first to do so on such a grand scale, highlighting a very important piece of American history and making its themes current. “What is creating the most anxiety in America right now? For me the answer is undeniably race,” series creator Damon Lindelof told NBC News. “Superheroes cannot defeat racism.”
With that, “Watchmen” becomes a cutting-edge treatise on our present-day upheaval. The new series remixes the DC Comics graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, setting it in present day Tulsa, Okla., and not...

(Warning: The following story contains Major spoilers from both the first episode of HBO’s “Watchmen,” and the DC Comics graphic novel.)
With the premiere of HBO’s “Watchmen, we finally know how Damon Lindelof is tackling the acclaimed graphic novel written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons: with both broad strokes and targeted precision.
Lindelof has described his version of “Watchmen” as a “remix” of the original comic, and that’s true. Featuring a new story and a new host of characters, it’s set 30 years after the events depicted in the comic, swapping 1980s Cold War anxieties for a contemporary story centered on race relations and police authority.
But the show frequently also makes it clear that the world in which it exists stems directly from the events of the comic. Below, TheWrap has rounded up every way those events are referenced in the premiere episode,...

HBO's Watchmen introduces the Rorschach inspired 7th Cavalry. We explain how they came to be.
This article contains spoilers for Watchmen episode 1 and the original book. We have a spoiler free review right here.
Perhaps the best known (and strangely beloved) character from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen was the masked vigilante known as Rorschach. The brutal crimefighter was always a fan favorite, both because of his striking design (the mysterious mask which displays Rorschach Test patterns as it obscures his entire face) and his uncompromising, relentless drive to solve the murder of the Comedian that drives the original story.
So with Walter Kovacs, the original Rorschach, unavailable (by virtue of having been blasted into atoms at the conclusion of the book by Dr. Manhattan) for HBO’s Watchmen, how does the show manage to incorporate the story’s most recognizable character? By having others take up his iconic mask,...

When Damon Lindelof was a teenager in 1989, he and his comic book-loving father spent $35 on a bootleg copy of the script to Watchmen, Batman screenwriter Sam Hamm’s attempt to adapt Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seminal deconstruction of superheroes and their stories. Over sandwiches, Lindelof’s dad began reading aloud from the opening scene, where terrorists attacked the Statue of Liberty and were fended off by a superhero team calling themselves the Watchmen. The scene got so many things wrong about the source material, literally and thematically, that the...

HBO's Watchmen trailer offers plenty of clues about how the original characters fit in this new world.
Damon Lindelof is making a Watchmen TV series for HBO. While the big screen Watchmen movie adaptation divided audiences, fans have long dreamed of what it would be like if a cable network undertook a massive adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' towering, inescapable comic book masterpiece. Well, HBO finally took everyone up on that, readying a Watchmen TV series for a fall release.
However, this isn't another adaptation of the story that everyone knows. Instead, HBO's Watchmen is a continuation of Moore and Gibbons' work, moving the world forward to (presumably) the present day, and the action from New York City to Tulsa, Oklahoma. There's only one recognizable character from the book present in this HBO footage, although the legacies of nearly every major player from...

Seems like Rorschach has quite the following if HBO’s first teaser for its upcoming “Watchmen” adaptation from Damon Lindelof is any indication.
Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, “Watchmen” embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own, per HBO. The minute-long teaser shows off Jeremy Irons (who is apparently playing an older version of Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias) and features multiple mysterious groups — all wearing masks — teasing the “end of the world.”
The show, which is based on Alan Moore’s series, will debut sometime this fall. Watch the video above.

Even as Game of Thrones winds down, HBO has been ramping up another sprawling adaptation of a genre epic that defies almost every traditional expectation about episodic television. It’s Watchmen, based on the namesake comic book epic by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons and published by DC Comics in the 1980s. HBO released the teaser today, you can watch it by clicking on the image above.
Set in an alternate history where superheroes are viewed as outlaws, the new drama from executive producer Damon Lindelof is rooted in the same universe as the source material but strikes out in new directions with unfamiliar characters and a different story to tell. The cast includes: Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk.

Despite its ever-expanding roster of DC Comics characters, The CW will most likely never get to use its most famous one: Batman.
But with “Batwoman,” the CW is coming as close as it possibly can to The Caped Crusader, who remains off-limits for the foreseeable future. So the creative team behind the show decided to lean into that aspect: What is Gotham City without the Dark Knight?
But unlike “Gotham,” the Fox series that depicts the city before Bruce Wayne ever puts on his cape and cowl, “Batwoman” will see Gotham City after the Dark Knight has left. “It’s a post-Batman Gotham City,” Sarah Schechter, an executive producer for the series, told TheWrap. “What is it like after these heroes leave?”

Jeremy Irons has been cast in a lead role in Damon Lindelof’s “Watchmen” pilot at HBO, Variety has confirmed.
Irons joins previously announced cast members Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard. And as with those already cast, the exact details of Irons’ character are being kept under wraps. The project is an adaptation of the DC graphic novel from Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins.
This would be Irons’ second regular onscreen TV role should “Watchmen” get ordered to series at HBO. He previously starred in the Showtime period drama “The Borgias,” which ran for three seasons. In addition, Irons is no stranger to comic book projects, having recently appeared as faithful butler Alfred in the DC films “Justice League” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” He is also known for his Oscar-winning role in “Reversal of Fortune...

Zack Snyder’s Watchmen is an interesting film. While it doesn’t hold together particularly well as a narrative, it’s full of striking images, is shot beautifully and contains several excellent performances. Obvious highlights are Jackie Earle Haley’s Rorschach, the opening credits and the incredible Dr. Manhattan origin scene, soundtracked to Philip Glass’ score from Koyaanisqatsi.
Now, in a slightly confusing development, Malin Ackerman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have indicated in an interview with CinemaBlend that they’d be up for returning to their roles as Silk Spectre and the Comedian:
Malin Akerman: Yeah, all of the people that we worked with, we’re still friends. I mean, it was… we spent a lot of time together. If anyone will have me as Silk Spectre again, I will do it, sand the latex outfit. Maybe we go cotton this time. [Laughs]

Above: 1960 Us first release one sheet for A Lesson in Love (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1954).Starting on February 7, The Best Show in Town may well be Film Forum’s Centennial Retrospective of the gargantuan six-decade oeuvre of Ingmar Bergman. 47 films over five weeks, 40 of them brand new digital restorations. Usually in these circumstances I gather as many posters as I can find from a filmmaker's career, but collecting posters for all of Bergman’s work would be a monumental task. And so I’ve decided to cut to the chase and select my ten favorite posters for his films. Most American posters for Bergman’s films—especially those from the 60s and 70s—are unusually wordy and quote-heavy, relying on critical acclaim to sell the latest product from the master. But, as much a visual stylist as a cerebral provocateur, Bergman has inspired many poster artists to great heights over the years.

According to writer/showrunner Damon Lindelof ("Lost") , HBO has greenlit his "Watchmen" live-action TV series concept, greenlighting a pilot, to be directed by Nicole Kassell ("The Leftovers") based on DC Comics, landmark 1986, 12-issue comic book mini-series, by writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons:
Lindelof's genre writing credits include "Prometheus" and "Star Trek Into Darkness".
With the release of director Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" (2009) 'Director's Cut' & 'Ultimate Cut', the brand has developed and maintained a strong fan base over the years.
