- Luke is arrested, and Phil is surprised by Claire's reaction. Mitchell has a new job offer to ponder. Cameron helps Gloria uncover the secret recipe for her family's sauce. Jay is set to receive an award from the Chamber of Commerce.
- Phil's insecurities about not being a rebel are triggered by Claire's reactions to Luke and Alex's surprising behavior. Even worse, Phil's adopted duck family continues to ignore him, while Luke feels ignored by every girl he's interested in. Haley, Dylan, Andy, and Beth spend time together, forcing Haley to be honest with herself about her romantic intentions. Cam and Mitch's attempt to sell their homemade hot sauce leads them to discover an exciting opportunity to partner with another family member. Jay struggles to prepare for an event honoring his success in business, and in doing so, motivates Mitch and Gloria to pursue their own business endeavors.
- Claire and Phil have their hands full when Luke gets arrested for driving without a license, then they catch Alex sneaking out of a liquor store, but that's on top of Phil dealing with some personal insecurities. Elsewhere, Cam tries to convince Gloria to recreate and sell her family's hot sauce while Mitch helps Jay shoot a video to accompany his Titans of Industry award. And Haley and Dylan have an awkward encounter with Andy and Beth at the movies.
- Opening scene: Phil is walking around the kitchen in Claire's robe. The ducks have imprinted on her and he's trying to get them to switch to him. Unable to coax them to follow him, he wonders if he doesn't 'have the scent right' so he reaches into Claire's wine glass to dab a bit of her wine on his neck.
Cut to an interview with Phil. He retells the story of the ducks, from finding them, to nursing them, and then Claire being the only one around when they were born. Hence their imprinting on her. She's sitting next to Phil on the couch, snuggling with the ducks, while he recants the tale.
Cut back to Phil in the robe. They get a late night phone call informing them that Luke has been arrested.
The next morning, while Phil is at the table eating breakfast, Luke comes downstairs. Phil starts calling him different names because as Phil says, 'I know it's not my well-behaved son Luke who'd never take our car out without a license and get arrested'. Turns out, Luke took the car out that night to go to a girls house so he could make a play on her under the guise of offering sympathy over her departed cat. Claire and Phil ground Luke. Phil makes his first punishment cleaning out the duck village.
That same day, Cam and Mitch are at the farmer's market selling the Tucker family sauce. It was a good year for tomatoes on Cam's family's farm and so they made extra batches for them to sell. Cam says it's a famous sauce and that a death row inmate requested it for his last meal... regardless, Cam and Mitch are having little luck selling it at their stand.
When they venture out from their stand they realize that Andrew and Simon are raking in the bucks with their hand-caught artesenal trout jerky. While at their stall, Simon offers Mitch a job at his firm. Even though they don't get along in social settings, Simon respects Mitch's work as a lawyer.
At the Pritchett home, Gloria is trying to teach Joe how to tie his shoes while Jay is working on his video for his Titans of Industry award. The video is awful and cheesy, but he's trying his best because he will be among the greats.
Meanwhile, Haley and Dylan are going to see a movie. They get in just before it starts and the theater is crowded. The only two adjoining seats that remain are next to Andy and his fiancée Beth, who just happened to go to the same movie. Haley takes the seat next to Andy and the storyline of the movie hits too close to home for her - minus the zombies it sounds a lot like the 'will they/won't they' relationship she has developed with Andy. Andy, on the other hand, appears completely unperturbed and unaware of the similarities. After the movie, Haley is trying to rush out with Dylan but Andy and Beth catch up to them and invite them to get a bite to eat together. Haley tries to decline but Dylan agrees, in part because he needs to take his medicine and needs Haley to hide it in his veggie burger.
Phil and Claire head out to the impound lot to pick up the car Luke was driving last night. Claire says that she likes that Luke is being a rebel because the magic and the trampolining has made him soft. Phil takes this personally. Before he can tell her what he thinks they spot Alex at an ATM outside the liquor store even though she said that she would be at school studying all weekend. Phil calls Alex and she lies to them, telling them that she's at the school library. Claire doesn't let Phil tell Alex that they've caught her in a lie because Claire doesn't think it's a big deal. She wants Alex to loosen up. When they hang up, Alex goes into the liquor store causing Claire and Phil to resume their argument about how Claire wants the kids to rebel so they aren't, as Phil says, 'like their namby-pamby dad'. Their argument is interrupted as they see Alex come out of the liquor store, crate in hand, and get into what Claire calls a 'sketchy repair van that is probably being driven by some middle-aged pervert with one long finger that they met online'. Claire tells Phil to follow them.
After the market, Mitch and Cam go to Jay and Gloria's house to return Manny's easel. Jay asks Mitch if he wants to help him make his titans video. Jay just ends up yelling at Mitch and decides they should just go eat lunch.
At the lunch table, Cam is telling Gloria how to eat the sauce, saying that she needs to swirl it in her mouth. Gloria is trying hard to be nice. When Cam tries to explain to Jay his sauce-eating strategy, Jay dismisses him and has everyone try the sauce Gloria's aunt Miranda used to make. Gloria just inherited the recipe because she is the oldest girl who didn't marry a Peruvian. Mitch tries the sauce and loves it. Cam is obviously threatened - mentioning that his family sauce was buried in a time capsule and that his family sauce was so secret it was only written down in one place.
Mitch asks to see the recipe and Cam knocks his hand, causing the recipe to fall into the pitcher of water. Cam tries to blot it off but the ink runs, ruining the recipe and Gloria's great uncle's napkins.
During this time, Manny comes over to the Dunphy house to help Luke clean the duck village. Manny notices that there are only 2 ducks and so they set off to find the missing third duck. They venture next door in search of the duck and find their classmate, Tammy, sunbathing in the backyard. As they're looking for the duck she catches Manny and asks if he's watching her sunbathe in a bikini. Luke managed to duck out of sight. Manny explains that he's looking for the missing duck as he finds the duck and scoops her up. This causes Tammy to warm up to and make friends with Manny.
Meanwhile, Jay is still working on his Titans video as Mitch is manning the camera. Cam tries apologizing to Gloria for ruining the sauce recipe. Gloria is angry at him and he says he may have done it on purpose because he was humiliated at the market. Gloria says she'd only seen her aunt make it once when she was 8 and so there no way she could remember. Then, she hears a car backfire and the recipe begins coming back to her. She remembers her aunt chopping cilantro louder so they couldn't hear the noise of gunshots. Because of Joe's toys she hears more sounds like a pig's oink and police sirens. The rest of the recipe comes flooding back.
Back at the restaurant they're talking about the movie. Dylan says the guy in the movie decided to spend the rest of his life with a zombie he didn't love. The hostess comes to bring them to their table. Dylan and Beth follow her while Hayley stops Andy to ask him why the movie didn't bother him. He said that Beth stood by him when he gained all the weight so he moved past Haley and focused on Beth, believing her to be the right person. Haley says she's happy for him.
On the car ride home, Beth suggests to Andy that they invite Haley and Dylan to the wedding. In Haley's car, however she's breaking up with Dylan because she feels like everyone is moving forward while they're moving backwards. Dylan gets out of the car.
Phil and Claire lose the van and go back to their house only to find the van in their driveway. Phil runs into the house and Claire runs after him. Running into Alex's room, Phil heads straight to her closet and punches the male in her closet. Unbeknownst to Phil, it's Luke's friend Reuben. Alex just wanted something easy to offset the stress of college.
Claire sees this act of bravery - Phil didn't know that it was a scrawny 17 year old in the closet - and it makes her apologize to Phil for insinuating he was too soft. They makeup.
Back at the Pritchett house, Gloria and Cam make Gloria's family sauce. Cam loves it and wants to sell it at the market. Gloria is afraid to do so because of a bad experience she had trying to sell her family's homemade hair relaxer. A confusing label led to misunderstandings with the customers regarding how long they should leave the relaxer in. Mitch, meanwhile, confides in Jay that he's torn between taking the job with Simon, whom he hates, or taking the big scary step of starting his own firm. Jay uses reverse psychology on Mitch and Gloria to get them to choose to do the things that scare them. Jay then turns his camera back on to record his video which is then the voiceover to the episode wrap-up: Alex is shown annoyed with Reuben, Gloria and Cam are shown selling her sauce at the market, Mitch is shown registering his firm, Luke is shown with a female caller at his door (the one with the cat who recently passed), and Joe declares to Jay that he can tie his shoe.
Later, Phil and Claire are going to the Titans of Industry dinner. Claire is repeatedly shouting Phil's name so he'll listen to her but Phil is on the phone trying to he get car out of the impound lot. Once they get his last name right, he finds out they still haven't got his first name correct. He starts shouting 'Phil' repeatedly into the phone, like Claire does to him, and suddenly the ducks stop following Claire and start following him.
