A very good episode

Warning: Spoilers
I don't quite agree with the reviewer who criticizes Humphrey's logic about why it is a murder and not a suicide.

While the reviewer's reasoning is not without some merit, (particularly his reasoning that a gunshot in the stomach makes suicide seem unlikely). Humphrey's logic, though, that Sian would have carried a towel into the shower seems reasonable to me, especially when coupled with his logic that there are much better places, on a secluded island, to kill yourself undisturbed, if that is what you're choosing to do.

For me, the lapse in mystery logic--which I have garnered from watching far too many mysteries--is that when you use a pillow to muffle the sound of a gun shot, there inevitably are particles of that pillow (feathers or whatever) inside the wound, that are impossible to get out or hide. Finding that evidence would have indicated to the detectives that it was murder, not suicide.

In any event, I continue to be impressed with the level of sophistication with how the murders are done in these locked room mysteries.

In this episode, the explanation for why there was no towel in the shower was cleverly thought out, in my opinion.

I am also exceedingly happy if, in fact, Humphrey has found himself a girlfriend. The subplot about Humphrey's awkwardness over women he might like to date, was way past expiration, IMO.

Solid end to the series.
Sleepin_Dragon8 November 2022
On the eve of JP' wedding Humphrey investigates the death of a young Welsh girl, and falls for a girl who hails from his part of the world.

Normally the series finale offers up something big, something a little special, this isn't that, it's just a good, solid episode. The crime was interesting enough, but it was Humphrey's love interest that created the interest here.

Favourite scene had to be the wedding, it looked gorgeous, as did the cast, JP and the bride looked sensational.

Maggie O'Neill was the standout for me, she was great, sometimes when people put on a Welsh accent it can be agonising to watch, hers though was really rather good.

I'm so used to seeing Sally Bretton in Not going out, nice to see her in a serious role, and I have to say, she is seriously beautiful.

Nice that it puts Cowbridge on the map, I'd recommend it, it's an affluent, picturesque place.

Overall, the wedding, Humphrey's love interest were lovely, the mystery was pretty average.

7/10.

No gunshot residue test done
kboult-8637915 November 2020
In other episodes where the victim supposedly shoot themselves the police officers check their hands for gunshot residue but in this episode they don't for no reason.

A very good end to a season!
harrykivi27 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The fifth season has been a ride, to say the least. "The Complex Murder" and "Dishing Up Murder" were good. "One for the Road", "Posing in Murder" fine enough. "A Personal Murder" almost great. Only "Lost Identity" and "The Blood Red Sea" were not very good, but even they were okay to watch. "Flames of Love" ends the season on a pretty high note.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. Everything looks and sounds good. The acting is very good all around. Tom York gives a much better performance than seen in "Breaking the Chain", Maggie O'Neill is relishing her time on screen, Owain Arthur's good. The list goes on and on...

. The murder mystery is very intriguing with interesting characters, fine twists and turns. The solution to the mystery was quite satisfying too with a control-freak of a boyfriend committing the crime.

. The humor of this episode is mostly quirky as well. JP's wedding was a heartwarming watch (even though I still think he got married way too quickly).

But....

. The are moments, where the jokes just do not work. The scene, when Goodman sat on a yogurt, was cringe-worthy at best.

. There are some over-obvious clues here too. It was pretty apparent from the start: Leo had more to do with the murder than he was just an innocent passer-by.

Overall, a very good episode.

Vacation, death and a wedding.
ctyankee119 January 2018
This episode starts with a lot of drinking and dancing, friends and mates sitting laughing and talking.

Later that night a woman that was on the island vacationing with her boyfriend of 2 years is found dead an apparent suicide. Sian was her name she was only 19 and her boyfriend much older.

After investigating DI Goodman's police crew find Sian had an affair with another man that was also visiting the island. This couple made out they did not know each other. Goodman is not sure it is a suicide yet. There is also a woman named Perrie who left her husband and newspapers reported her missing but she was alive and well and wanted a different life.

There are beautiful scenes in this episode like many scenes in this series but in this one there is a special wedding. Officer JP Hooper is getting married. The wedding takes place in a church. It is a very happy time for everyone including me.

DI Goodman still talks to much as usual but at the wedding he gets an idea and believes Sian did not kill herself and leaves the wedding to prove who did it.

I can do without the drinking it does not work as entertainment for me, I don't drink. I do like the series though. They are entertaining, funny and full of mystery.

Season five wraps up
safenoe15 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Anyway, I've been enjoying reflecting on Death in Paradise after becoming a fan when it debuted over a decade ago. Anyway, here we have Flames of Love, which is the season five finale. Kris Marshall by this time had been the DI for three seasons, so it was Ben Miller as DO for two seasons and one episode (the first of season three), with Marshall coming on board in season three, episode one. Marshall departs in episode six of season four, so his total tenure was almost four seasons init.

Tom York (not famous musician Thom York) is guest star, along with Aimee-Ffion Edwards. Worth watching init.

Confusing deduction and easy to point fingers in the right direction
tgfbrofam13 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was an okay episode although after they find the body and start deducting things, Humphrey proclaims it "makes no sense" that she went into the shower rooms with her wash bag but without a towel just to turn around and kill herself. An easy explanation for that is she hid the gun in the bag, took out the toiletries that were on top of the gun, sat in front of the shower door to prevent people close to her walking in on her dead and shot herself... This has been the case in real life multiple times.

The only thing that points to murder is the fact that she shot herself in her stomach instead of the head or heart which is where most suicide victims shoot themselves right?? So it's just absurd for them to instantly presume it's murder JUST because she didn't have a towel but had her wash bag. What if she was just brushing her teeth and changing her sanitary products? I've done that multiple times personally.

It wasn't that hard to deduce who did murder her also, the boyfriend was controlling and abusive and it was obvious she didn't want to go home with him or be left alone with him.

All in all, it was quite a pushed, almost forced episode.
