The Heptapods in Arrival (2016) bear an uncanny resemblance to the octopus-like creature appearing in this short by Martin Villeneuve. The fact that Denis Villeneuve's younger brother came up with this image some 14 years prior to Arrival (2016) has lead some viewers to speculate about "precognition," which is at the heart of the movie.
In 2002, Martin Villeneuve was tasked by a graphic design teacher to create a fake album cover from a popular singer. Rather than choosing some random artist, the 24-year old Villeneuve approached Quebec icon Jean Leloup and proposed a real collaboration instead. Leloup set out to compose an original text while Villeneuve handled the lighting and camera work.
The naked dancer appearing in a parallel montage with the footage of Jean Leloup was Martin Villeneuve's girlfriend at the time.
This short film was lost, never released, then found nearly 20 years later. A song by Jean Leloup, unearthed. A James Bond opening title sequence on drugs, a tribute to the 80s, a musical orgasm, an impressionist poem filmed spontaneously in one day, budgetless, back when Martin Villeneuve was studying filmmaking and graphic design.
