I fear for another season with season 3 quality
ellisday-954-3009191 January 2017
This episode was OK at best, nothing special at all really. I was hoping to watch something with different pacing that the other seasons but what I got was a slowly paced, forgettable episode with no foreseeable direction for the future for the season. As with homeland, the acting was dry but excellent from the cast, with each member adapting to their role. I especially enjoyed Quinn's role in this episode and am looking forward to his progression throughout the season. All this episode did for me was to hint at a slow season with a direction to a more political season, however I still hope from what I saw on the trailer to have a good season, but I cannot see it going anywhere amazing like in the earlier seasons. Hardcore homeland fans will enjoy it but see a decline in quality, but it was worth the watch, I suppose. I truly hope there is a good conclusion this year with this season, or if not a cliffhanger because I am tired on Homeland ending their seasons at the same standard as the rest of the season. 3.5/5

Bleak beginnings
mycannonball25 January 2022
This first episode isn't particularly enjoyable because Quinn is a beloved character and he's in a very bad place physically, mentally, and emotionally. I hope throughout the season he will improve and recover significantly more. Great acting. It's just so bleak though (and kind of slow).

Had expected more BANG in this premier.
norin-hans8 January 2017
Tonight - close to new years'celebrations I was expecting some "fire-works" to wake up the old man's body in the premier. Suppose they'll follow later. However, it's a comfort that Homeland is like it always have been, and will remain for may seasons to come. :) Anyhow - as an 80+ Swedish admirer of Homeland for decades, one is used to be disappointed by first episodes of every season - but stays, spell-bound, to the bitter ends... Greetings for 2017, h@nsO'Norin,80+(på S.H.)- Southern-Heights of Stockholm. PS. - What magic trick will they try (this season?) to bring back BRODY to life? AND - Shall Saul stand up to "THE END" -??

Good start but name of president elect is bothersome
stuartpc27 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
OK, so this probably shouldn't be a big deal, but since there are literally a gazillion names to choose from when naming a character, why would the writers of Homeland decide to give the president-elect a character name that is already taken by another character on a different TV show? Spelling is different, but her name Elizabeth Keane is the same as Elizabeth Keen from The Blacklist. I had a hard time concentrating on her character in Homeland because I kept thinking that I knew that name from some other show, and sure enough Mr. Google reminded me of what show I had seen that on. For some reason this bothers me. Makes me think that Homeland has gone into the just going through the motions phase of a TV series. All in all the show was OK, and I liked the build up to the premise of this season, but the name thing is throwing me for a loop.

Interesting

First I had hoped I'd live long enough to see the first woman president as I did the first black president. So at its core I don't care that the President in the show is a woman. I just have to wonder if this President is a woman because it was expected the Hilary Clinton would become President.

What's interesting is that in many ways the politics portrayed are more akin to Trump than what would have been done as Clinton. So if that part of the stroyline is done because of politics I hate it.

Having said all that, the ep for the start of a new season is as most other reviews say very so-so. Largely I think that was so it could start too many storylines. I think they tried to start too many stories in one ep and it caused it to crash mostly because the stories were subpar. Having already seen the season before, it does get better, but this was a hey batter batter swing and a miss.

Yawn-inducing

There's nothing in this episode that tells you what to expect from this season, this is the weakest opening episode in the entire series. I was expecting something spectacular after the somewhat disappointing finale of the last season. Hope the next episode will pick up the pace.

Not sure what to expect
YanDark31 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The episode was boring. It was quite bad actually. I'm rating this episode on how enjoyable it was, which isn't much.

Now, I understand that when you start a new season you need some time to set up the story. So I'm not writing this show off yet. But this show has also started a season poorly before and the season turned out to be terrible.

We don't know yet which direction this show will go, but it's always important to start the season strongly. A lot of the time on this episode was wasted on catch up and set up.

Maybe the catch up and set up are needed to get into the season, but they could've done a longer episode or a double episode premiere.

I'm also deeply disappointed about the direction the show has gone into. Every season is a standalone season now. It used to have a story, a main overarching plot, now it's just whatever is the flavor of the month, that's what they'll do.

I'm not quitting this show just yet, but we were all disappointed by the quality of this first episode.

Mediocre and sparkless
dierregi24 April 2021
In American movies and series there are overused recurring tropes, one of which is the "ungrateful character standing as a lone hero". Few tropes are as annoying as the beaten, weak, feeble, powerless character who doesn't accept anybody's help.

In this lacklustre opening of what feels like a useless series there are two main characters who play that trope: Carrie, who's kinda boring in her atoning mode of single mum saving innocent Muslims and dumping billionaire Otto because she's an empowered, heroic woman and Quinn, who survived all the terrible injuries of the past season to turn into the über annoying PTSD sufferer who hates everybody and himself most of all.

What about being grateful - Carrie to Otto and Quinn to Carrie - and not pretentious and a burden? Nobody- or hardly anybody- is grateful in contemporary fiction. Everybody is the new Garbo, they just want to be left alone.

Elsewhere a worn out political drama is developing around a peace-loving lady President opposite Saul and Dar... yawn.

What is this?!?

Very bad comparing to previous seasons. Politically correct on expense of quality and releability.
