Welcome to the last day of the decade. As we move from 2019 to 2020, it’s time for my annual look at year’s best and brightest. Yes, today I’ll be giving out some personal awards, revealing my top ten list, and basically just putting a final bow on the year. 2019 is about to end, so why don’t we go out with a bang? Let’s get started with the end of the year rundown folks! As always, below you will be able to see both my picks for the very best movies of 2019 as well as the best performances of the year. In terms of the films, I’ll be doing a top 30 list again, with a dozen honorable mentions, just because (I like including as much as possible on these lists…we know this by now). The same will go for the performances I’m keenest on,...

Following our top 50 films of 2019, we’re sharing personal top 10 lists from our contributors. Check out the latest below and see our complete year-end coverage here.
I’m not sure if it says more about the quality of international productions above domestic titles in 2019 or my own evolving tastes, but I’ve never had this many foreign language films in a Top Ten before. And it’s not just European countries like France and Germany. The Middle East, Asia, and Scandinavia are represented too. The consistent output of stellar dramatic work that resonated beyond borders was a truly stunning thing to behold and I hope it continues into the next decade.
Another common through-line here is the success of quiet, contemplative dramas that look to mine below the surface to find political, social, and cultural truth. So many titles on this list are dialogue-heavy confrontations in search of identity, strength,...

James Badge Dale is one of the hardest working actors out there. He’s always conscious, and very much cares about, the power of creative collaboration. Badge (as he prefers to be called) is the type of actor who disappears so effortlessly into his roles that every movie buff might think of a different project when his name pops up in conversation. He was Jack Bauer’s partner on the third season of “24,” shot Leo’s brains out in “The Departed,” and was the lead of AMC’s criminally underappreciated series, “Rubicon.”
Following his show’s cancellation, the actor found quite a stride in big-budget studio films, stealing the spotlight of movies ranging from “Iron Man 3” to “The Lone Ranger” and “Flight.” He’s been featured in phenomenal indie gems such as Steve McQueen’s “Shame,” and the recent, under-sung tension boiler, “The Standoff At Sparrow Creek,” which feels...

Exclusive: I hear that Jason Sudeikis and Evangeline Lilly have been cast in Till Death, the action thriller being helmed by Aharon Keshales, who co-directed 2013 breakout Israeli horror Big Bad Wolves.
In the film, convicted felon Jimmy gets early parole after serving twelve years for armed robbery. Upon his release, he vows to give Annie, his childhood love, now dying from cancer, the best last year of her life – unfortunately it’s not that simple. Keshales penned the script with Navot Papushado and Kai Mark.
The project comes from Dallas-based producers Cinestate and Arts District Entertainment, and is fully financed by London-based Media Finance Capital.
Uphe Content Group has already snapped up world rights to the package. Pic will go into production in January 2020.
SNL grad Sudeikis is making something of a genre departure on this high-octane action pic, following recent drama roles in Kodachrome and Driven, alongside his comedy work.

Welcome to July folks. Here’s something fun, which we do every single year right around this time. This article should come as no surprise, as you see me write this around the same point, but time really flies, doesn’t it? We’re officially in the month of July now and have entered into the second half of the year. That of course means one thing…well, it means a lot of things, but here it means one thing specifically: it’s time for my mid year look at the best of the first half! As of the writing of this piece, I’ve seen just over 175 movies so far in 2019, which is a bit more than the normal amount for me, for what that’s worth. It’s going to be a fairly thorough and doesn’t really omit any huge early year releases, so that’s good.

With April wrapping up, we can once again look back. We’ve officially finished up with the first third of the calendar. As such, I wanted to once again highlight the best of the year so far, consisting of my top ten and various awards for 2019 to date. Much like last time around, when I did the first quarter of the year at the start of April, I’m mostly limiting it to things that have already hit theaters. My only exception in the past has been that I’d include eligible titles from the currently ongoing Tribeca Film Festival, but since that’s still in progress, I’ll hold off. There are some others from the year that I’m fond of and might have otherwise included, but I didn’t want to cheat, so they’re on hold and will be given a special citation. Basically, it’s an arbitrary decision,...

Somehow, March is about to end. Ladies and gentlemen, as I seem to find myself saying around this point each and every single year…time really does fly. Believe it or not, we’re now a full three months into the 2018 movie calendar, which means we’re literally a quarter of the way through the film slate for the year. Wow. Just…wow. That got me thinking about what the best of the bunch so far this year has been, as I’m prone to do around this time each year. Since now is around the time when the film slate begins to transition into summer releases and counter programming independent fare ramps up, I thought it was the perfect time to praise the best of 2019 so far. Basically, anything that hit screens between January 1st and March 31st will be up for grabs here for my personal honors. Once again,...

After writing the DVD Obscura column for years at Movies.com, TheWrap’s Film Reviews Editor Alonso Duralde brings it to its new home. In an age where niche and classic movies are harder and harder to find via traditional streaming services, it’s still worth maintaining a collection of physical media that can’t disappear from the internet (or even from your own online library). Each month, Duralde highlights new DVD, Blu-ray and 4K releases in six categories: Indie, Foreign, Documentary, Grindhouse, Classics and TV.

Last month, Samsung announced they would no longer produce Blu-ray players. It gave physical media fans – like me, and presumably you, if you’re reading this column – pause. The reasoning could be because Samsung’s 4K technology has been subpar in compared to others. Or it could spell the beginning of the end – a […]

Last year’s Toronto International Film Festival featured debuts from some of the most acclaimed films of the year. However, when you have so many high-profile films at one event, there are some indie gems that tend to get lost in the shuffle. One of those was “The Standoff at Sparrow Creek.” After it’s successful debut at Tiff and positive critical reception, the thriller enjoyed a theatrical run earlier this year and is now ready to debut on digital and Blu-ray/DVD.

Here’s a film where the term “they don’t make em like this anymore” really does apply. A largely single location independent drama with stylized dialogue and a less than politically correct edge? Mixing David Mamet with Quentin Tarantino would normally mean an indie with a wise ass streak and a modern sensibility. Here, with The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, what we have is something far more old fashioned than that. Essentially a whodunit, this flick offers up a compelling tale that keeps you wired in right up until the very end. With a single minded focus, it tells a razor sharp story about as well as it can be told, complete with a hell of an ending, to boot. A drama/mystery, the movie is literally a standoff. Gannon (James Badge Dale) is a former cop who lives in the woods and is a member of a local militia.

January continues its slow roll on the Specialty side this weekend with very few anticipated limited releases. IFC Films has the headliner of the weekend with political thriller An Acceptable Loss starring Tika Sumpter and Jamie Lee Curtis. Chicago Fire director Joe Chappelle wrote and directed the title after finding inspiration from two documentaries by Errol Morris. Brooklyn-based Distrib Films believes it found an under-the-radar gem in last year’s Berlin Film Festival with The Heiresses, which took two Silver Bears at the event in the German capital.
Other openers this weekend include Screen Media’s 2016 Tribeca Nora Ephron prize-winner Adult Life Skills, as well as Freestyle Digital Media’s I Hate The Kids and Rlj Entertainment’s The Standoff at Sparrow Creek.

Writer/director Henry Dunham’s The Standoff at Sparrow Creek is a terrific mystery film with a twist, about a militia group -- with such actors as James Badge Dale, Patrick Fischler and Chris Mulkey as the diverse members -- that tries to discover over the course of one night, and in a single location, which one of its affiliates lost his mind, took a weapon from their warehouse and used it to kill several cops that were gathered at a funeral. The movie is finally arriving to theaters and Digital/On Demand this Friday, January 18, hence you can find my full 14-minute interview with Dunham in the video below. At last year’s Fantastic Fest, where his debut feature length film had its U.S. premiere, Dunham chimed...

The film begins in total silence to the point where you wonder if something went wrong with the sound. The camera pans through still trees until finding Gannon (James Badge Dale) on the ground with rifle ready to take out the deer we can assume is somewhere out of frame. It’s only when we hear the pop of guns in the distance that we realize first-time writer/director Henry Dunham has been meticulously ensuring that we process exactly what he needs us to before heading towards the solitary locale we’ll spend the rest of The Standoff at Sparrow Creek‘s short yet tense 88-minute runtime. Having Gannon visible when those blasts go off is deliberate because there must be no question that he’s the one man we can implicitly trust.

The banner year of horror that was 2018 was highlighted by many celebratory occurrences both on and off the big screen, and chief among them was the return of Fangoria magazine via Cinestate. To celebrate the eagerly awaited return of Fangoria (and its ever-expanding involvement in the realms of book publishing and movie producing), Lakeshore Records has teamed up with Fangoria and an eclectic team of musicians to release the ’80s-esque soundtrack Hollydoom as an official audio companion to the long-running magazine.

Happy almost 2019, dear readers! The holiday season is nearly over, but rather than let that get you down, why not indulge in some great horror movies coming our way over the next few months? Usually, the winter season of genre releases can be something of a mixed bag in terms of quality, but there some impressive projects coming out in the next few months that have me extremely excited as a horror fan. The two films that are my most anticipated are (of course) Us from Jordan Peele and Christopher Landon’s sequel Happy Death Day 2U, but I’m also very intrigued by what I’ve seen from films like Greta, Glass, Braid, Captive State, and Escape Room so far, and am really looking forward to seeing how those stories come together onscreen as well.

Writer/director Henry Dunham made a splash among critics and film fans alike earlier this year when his feature film debut The Standoff at Sparrow Creek made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Writer-director Henry Dunham's thriller The Standoff at Sparrow Creek has met with controversy and criticism well before any footage was actually shown to an audience. Initially titled "Militia" and produced by Cinestate, the project had acquired a reputation for being either too right-wing or too insensitive. Some real-life incidents regarding real militia didn't help. Actors and casting agencies walked away, refusing to cooperate. Seeing the finished product makes you wonder what all the fuss was about, for The Standoff at Sparrow Creek is an intelligently made chamber-drama (it could easily have been a theater-play), in which several characters clash with each other while cooped-up together in a time of crisis. In the film, members of a private militia gather at a lumber mill after a...

I’ve got a trailer here that you’ve got to watch for a new thriller called The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. The movie premiered at Fantastic Fest and was met with a lot of positive buzz.
This first trailer for the movie is certainly riveting and quickly got my attention and held me in. The story centers on a group of militia members who fall into a state of paranoia and anxiety after one of their members goes and shoots up a police funeral. The thing is, no one knows who did it and someone is hiding something.
