“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened in second place at the South Korean weekend box office, a distance behind local holdover title “The Roundup: Punishment.”
“Punishment,” the fourth part of Don Lee’s “Roundup” action franchise, dominated proceedings for the third weekend in succession. It earned $5.53 million and advanced its cumulative total to $67.7 million, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Its earnings represented a still strong 58% share of the weekend theatrical market, but they were also down by 60% week-on-week, suggesting that “Punishment” may not reach the heights of the previous franchise elements.
In 2022, “The Roundup” earned $95.7 million (using current rates of currency exchange), while last year “The Roundup: No Way Out” earned $76.3 million.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” recorded $2.45 million between Friday and Sunday with a 26% market share. Over its full five-day opening in Korea, the film earned $3.10 million from 415,000 ticket sales.

After the massive critical and commercial success of “A Silent Voice” (2016), it seemed like director Naoko Yamada could do no wrong and was poised for huge things. It may have been strange for some then that her next directorial project would be tied to the “Sound! Euphonium” anime series, which Yamada had previously worked on as series unit director under Tatsuya Ishihara. It could almost be seen as a regression, as Yamada's first two features, “K-on! The Movie” (2011) and “Tamako Love Story” (2014), were also based on pre-existing anime series. Yet whether a fan of “Sound! Euphonium” or not, “Liz and the Blue Bird” (2018) is a constant delight and could well be Yamada's masterpiece.

Critically acclaimed anime director Naoko Yamada, whose filmography includes the Sound! Euphonium series, Clannad, and K-On!, has us excited for her next work, which is set to come out this year. Kimi no Iro (Your Color) was initially set to be released in 2023, but the title has been delayed to 2024. Now, with the release of the film’s first trailer, we have also confirmed the premiere date for the movie, which is going to be August 30, 2024.
Kimi no Iro‘s fall 2023-to-summer 2024 delay upset some fans, but the movie is now on track to release in several months’ time, so fans can rejoice. The movie will follow high school student Totsuko, who has the ability to perceive the emotions of other people as colors. Because of this ability, she has to tread very lightly and tell white lies to other people to avoid darkening their colors, which is important to her.

In a dramatic turn of events, the defense team representing Shinji Aoba, the convicted arsonist responsible for the July 2019 attack on Kyoto Animation, filed an appeal with the Osaka High Court. The move comes in response to the death sentence handed down to Aoba by presiding judge Keisuke Matsuda on Jan 25, 2024.
During the trial the defense claimed that Aoba was in a state where he could not distinguish reality from fiction while setting fire to the animation studio and that his sentence should be lenient in light of his mental state.
Judge Matsuda’s ruling had however noted that Aoba was neither insane nor was of diminished capacity when he committed the crime, which made him liable for his actions.
Further details regarding the appeal is yet to be revealed.

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
I've written before about how horror anime doesn't always work because the medium of animation (except for stop motion) inherently makes it harder to create a feeling of dread and horror. While that is true, it is not the same with melodramas, of which there are many in anime. There are many shows that deliver truly stunning pieces of emotional art that make tears flow like rivers (and I've covered some right here).
Yet there are few anime dramas that are capable of ripping your heartstrings and tying them in knotty messes while also delivering feature film-level quality in TV form quite like "Violet Evergarden," a show that is part tech demo for Kyoto Animation, and part experiment in empathy (seeing how much a show can make the audience cry in...

Anime isn't a genre. It's a medium, one that's still fighting for mainstream acceptance in the West. Its hold on American audiences is stronger than ever, with Studio Ghibli blockbusters and franchises like "My Hero Academia" earning critical acclaim and global adoration. However, too many people still associate animation with children's viewing. While there are plenty of great anime films that parents can show to their kids, this attitude still leads to confusion. Not only is some anime emphatically not child-safe, but if you dismiss it as kids' stuff, you're missing out on some great movies.
If you've never watched an anime film before, rest assured that it's not all sailor uniforms and jiggly bits, just like how action movies aren't all gravelly-voiced men and sexy ladies. There's something for everyone, although we also confess that you're going to see a lot of Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii here, and for good reasons.

At first glance, “The Stranger by the Shore” sounds seductive. This anime adaptation of Kanna Kii’s “L’étranger” Bl manga series promises visually stunning imagery: the character designs are reminiscent of Yoshitake Oima’s “A Silent Voice,” and the animation too sounds promising under the direction of Ghibli-support Studio Hibari. Beauty is only skin-deep, however. As gorgeous as the film is, the anime movie is simply boring – and for all the wrong reasons.
“The Stranger by the Shore” revolves around the blossoming romance between two teenage boys on a remote Japanese island. Shun Hashimoto aspires to be a novelist. In the meantime, however, he works at a hospice for local tourists. When he’s not writing or working, he watches over his next-door neighbor Mio. Shun fusses over him constantly; he sneaks him snacks from the hospice, invites him to dinner, and goes out of his way to greet him on their walk to school.

Water, as a conduit for romance and spirituality, has been en vogue as of late in Japanese feature animation. Entries in this wet subgenre, where young characters grapple with torrential rain and oceans to dazzling effect, as well as life lessons submerged in nature-based metaphors, include Makoto Shinkai’s box office hit “Weathering With You,” Ayumu Watanabe’s upcoming “Children of the Sea,” and Masaaki Yuasa’s mermaid tale “Lu Over the Wall.”
Returning to that liquid magic, Yuasa, who produces films through his own company Science Saru, makes a new splash with his third feature in three years “Ride Your Wave,” written by Reiko Yoshida, who also penned recent anime standouts “Okko’s Inn,” “A Silent Voice,” and “Liz and the Blue Bird.” Notwithstanding the saturation of H2O-fueled teen movies, the director-screenwriter pair filter a love story through an oddball premise addressing heroism and perseverance with robust notes of graphic originality.

Japan’s anime powerhouse Kyoto Animation Studio, known for its compassionate storytelling and respectful treatment of its animators, was attacked by an arsonist on Thursday, with a fire breaking out at the company’s first studio building in Fushimi-ku, killing at least 33 workers and injuring more than 30 more.
The country was rocked by the shocking terrorist attack, as the death toll was the highest for an arson incident since 1989. Around 70 people were working when the fire broke out in the morning, which quickly spread throughout the three stories; a 41-year-old suspect was taken into custody and no motive was ascertained.
Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) was founded in 1981 by the husband-and-wife team of Hideaki and Yoko Hatta, who serve as president and vice president, respectively. KyoAni, which has a second studio facility located in Uji city, is acclaimed for its focus on anime TV series and movies about pre-teen and teen schoolgirl empowerment.

Last September saw the Camera Japan Festival arrive in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and as usual it brought good food, good films, good music and a good atmosphere. As with many festivals, audiences were allowed to rate the films, and a "Top Five" emerged. Interestingly, two of the five highest rated films were anime. Katabuchi Sunao's In This Corner of the World was number four, and Yamada Naoko's A Silent Voice (pictured above) even topped the list! And think of this: Shinkai Makoto's magnificent blockbuster drama Your Name wasn't even playing at the festival, though not for lack of trying by the programmers. Had they succeeded, would there have been three anime in the top 5? Not a far stretch of the imagination... We can say...

While the anime industry seemed to be in a rut for the last few years, desperately looking for new star directors to emerge, recently there has been no shortage of great adult-oriented films. Shinkai Makoto's Your Name broke all records, and Katabuchi Sonao's In This Corner of the World and Yamada Naoko's A Silent Voice have picked up awards at festivals worldwide. A Silent Voice even ended up being the most appreciated film by audiences at the Camera Japan Festival in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, no mean feat, especially when you consider that the film is a strong drama about bullying, seen from both the victims/survivors' and perpetrators' sides. UK-based distributor Anime Limited has now released A Silent Voice on Blu-ray, and while their edition isn't...
