A solid series opener.

Mount Esme is showing strange activity, scientist Stephen is killed on the night he was on watch, Humphrey suspects one of his fellow scientists.

Series six opens up with a relatively casual affair. On the plus side, it's a visual treat, it's jaw dropping to look at, superb production values, and there are a couple of laughs thrown in courtesy of Dwayne and The Commissioner. Unfortunately the mystery itself lacks intrigue, lacks originality, and ultimately felt a little wishy washy.

Nice to see Sally Bretton back, and Martha's scenes with Humphrey were nice, I loved the scene where he shook her hand, so sweet.

Let's be honest, this episode has one of the show's best lineups, some really impressive names assembled for this one, Douglas Hodge, Natasha Little and Cyril Nri, unfortunately none of them has a meaty part, they're all very good, but none of them was gifted with great material.

It's a good watch, with this cast, and the volcano setting, it should have been awesome, 7/10.

Warning: Spoilers
"Death in Paradise" has become one of my favorite shows in the past month or so. The first two seasons with Ben Miller were an absolute blast. Miller's character Richard Poole was such an amazing addition to the scenery being funny and sincere at the same time. After Ben Miller left, "Death in Paradise" has not been what it used to be. The third and fourth season started solid, but then went off the rails with "The Wrong Man", "Swimming in Murder" being embarrassing. The fifth season however was surprisingly enjoyable one ("A Personal Murder" being one of the series' very best). So I was looking forward for the sixth. And got a bit disappointed. "Erupting in Murder" is not a bad "Death in Paradise", but in terms of the premieres of the show, it's easily the weakest so far.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. Everything looks and sounds amazing. The acting's good too. Natasha Little is solid in her role.

. The humor is very quirky as well. Humphrey finding her love was also very nice to see.

But....

. The murder mystery is not the best what "Death in Paradise" has to offer. It did take some time (about twenty minutes), when I finally picked up on the story. The mystery did not have as many twists and turns as I would have wanted to as well.

. The solution about everywhere having a hand in the murder has gone from being one of the best twists of all time to one of the most commonly used twists. "Erupting in Murder" uses that twist, but it falls short on the expectations, because it's just a bit obvious. The motive for the murder was weak on everyone's behalf too.

. The subplot about the commissioner and Dwayne could have been much funny if more time was given to it.

Overall, fine, but not an impressive premiere to a season.

6/10 HK

Warning: Spoilers
Yorquiris has an uncredited role as Figurant, and I had check the dictionary for the meaning, being a stage actor who has a small part with little or nothing to say. But still, the figurants play a critical role in Death in Paradise and in every television or movie or theatrical production, for instance in Death in Paradise you have the two actors playing paramedics who turn up at the murder scene. Anyway, here Mount Esme is the setting of the season six murder, and we see the beginning of the end of Humphrey's tenure in Death in Paradise, to be continued a few years later in Beyond Paradise init.

Incredibly Lazy

The writing is just thin. No character really has any substance. The previously well meaning but shambolic detective is now serious and blunt, the side characters are one note at best, and the actual mystery doesn't have that moment of "oh, I could have figured it out all along!". Avoid.
