Comic book writer-turned-director Dash Shaw (“My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea”) has conjured the wildest, most surreal animated feature of the year with the 2D “Cryptozoo.” It’s about a group of cryptozookeepers in the late ’60s who create a utopia safe haven for rare, fantastic beasts to protect them from becoming weaponized by the U.S. military. However, the search for the most revered creature — the nightmare-sucking Baku — by cryptid hunter Lauren Grey (Lake Bell) reveals the harmful implications of such an idealistic pursuit.
Shaw, who collaborated with his animator wife Jane Samborski, described “Cryptozoo” as a counter-culture version of “Jurassic Park.”
“When the movie starts, your mind goes to ‘Jurassic Park’ and you’re thinking how it’s going to fail in ‘Cryptozoo,'” Shaw said. “But whereas ‘Jurassic Park’ has a cleaner, allegorical space that’s defined by Spielberg, ‘Cryptozoo’ makes more unusual associations and a collage of different tones.

“If anyone’s taking that gay horse, it’s me,” declares ruthless ex-military cryptid poacher Nicholas, while Lauren Gray, the heroic protector of mythological creatures in Cryptozoo, prepares to take off on a snowy white Pegasus with a mane and wings in pastel rainbow shades. Dash Shaw’s animated fantasy film “Cryptozoo” has sold to Magnolia out of the Sundance Film Festival, with the distributor acquiring the film’s North American rights.
The film, which played in the Next section of Sundance, follows Cryptozookeepers who try to capture Baku, a dream-eating hybrid creature of legend, and debate whether they should display these creatures or keep them hidden from the world.
Lake Bell, Zoe Kazan, Michael Cera, Louisa Krause, Peter Stormare, Thomas Jay Ryan, Grace Zabriskie and Angeliki Papoulia all voice animated characters in the film. And Magnolia is planning to release “Cryptozoo” later this year.
“Cryptozoo” was written and directed by Shaw, who is also known for his film “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea.” Jane Samborski directed the film’s hallucinatory animation, which critics have referred to as a blend of “Yellow Submarine” and “Jurassic Park.”

Mythology and psychedelia come together in a trippy mix in the latest animation from My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea director Dash Shaw. With its sex and violence this is most certainly not for children, although its Jurassic Park style themes concerning failed Utopias passed through the prism of Sixties politics and activism have a certain childlike simplicity to them and, as such, are likely to prove more endearing to some audiences than others.

There’s no denying that “13 Reasons Why” is a divisive show, especially with its second season, as showrunner Brian Yorkey extended the narrative beyond the story of teenage Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), following her death by suicide.
Digging further into the aftermath of Hannah’s death, especially its impact on her friends, family, and school community, the season doesn’t pull its punches on examining past tragedies and inflicting new ones on its characters. Sometimes, the show made good choices in this regard. Sometimes, things went awry. Below, we dig into what worked best and what didn’t in the show’s return.
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “13 Reasons Why” Season 2.]

For celebrated comic book author—and now filmmaker—Dash Shaw, technical limitations aren’t a “concession,” but a defining trait of the films he aspires to make. “I always thought that that limited mode was the coolest, like the anime version of independent cinema, where it’s poetic or personal or idiosyncratic,” Shaw says of the style he pursued with his feature debut, the aptly titled My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea. Fusing the styles of two genres—the autobio…...

A favorite on last year’s festival circuit, Gaston Solnicki’s artful and inventive “Kékszakállú” is bound for a limited release later this month, and its debut trailer only hints at the unique joys awaiting inside of it. The film is billed as “a portrait of several young women at the threshold of adulthood, feeling their way through various crises born of the insular comforts of class privilege. Obliquely inspired by Bela Bartok’s sole opera, Bluebeard’s Castle is radically transposed within the alternating milieux of work and repose in Buenos Aires and Punta del Este.”
In an official statement, Solnicki further explained his inspirations for the feature: “Two years ago I was under the spell of Bartok’s feverish opera, and it was through the lens of a similarly folkloric transfiguration that I began to envision the lives of teenagers who vacationed much as I had as a youth: summers at the coast,...

Our weekly Film Festival Roundup column explores notable stories and news updates from the circuit. Check out last week’s Roundup right here.
Producer and distributor Gkids has a big idea for the animated world, best expressed in three little words: Animation Is Film. It’s both a philosophy and the name of a newly announced festival cooked by the company best known for bringing animated offerings from Studio Ghibli and other rising stars (think “My Life as a Zucchini” and “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea”) to domestic screens. Gkids will launch the festival this October in partnership with both France’s own Annecy International Animation Film Festival and IndieWire’s sister publication, Variety.
Envisioned as an annual event, the inaugural edition of the festival will run October 20 – 22 at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theater in Hollywood (better known to most as Mann’s Chinese Theater), complete with a showcase of 20 programs that includes feature films in competition, special presentations, retrospectives and short film programs.
Animation Is Film has been designed with a very specific goal in mind, to bring a world-class animation festival to the U.S. which, unlike Europe and Asia, is severely lacking when it comes to such annual offerings. Other countries boast animation-centric festivals like Annecy, Montreal’s Stop Motion Festival, the Ottawa International Film Festival, and the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival, but the U.S. doesn’t have such large-scale events, instead festivals often screen animated films as part of other sections. Animation Is Film hopes to fill that gap and provide a new space for larger audiences to enjoy animated films in every form.

But while the festival’s most obvious aim is to bring high-quality animated offerings to North America via a splashy new event, its official mission reveals that the fest is also focused on exploring other needs in the industry, including an emphasis on supporting female filmmakers and other underrepresented groups. Animation Is Film doesn’t just want to screen the best in animation to its audience, it also wants to highlight and explore up-and-coming talents, new styles of work, and push past traditional ideas of the very medium itself.
Animation Is Film is built around five core missions, including “presenting a highly selective, annual showcase of the best new works of animation from around the world,” though it will also “champion and support filmmakers who use animation to pursue unique cinematic visions and who are unconstrained by conventional notions of what animation is capable of.” And those filmmakers? Aif hopes they can represent all sorts of creators, from female filmmakers to “filmmakers from a wide range of cultural, economic, and national backgrounds.”
In an official statement, Gkids Founder and CEO Eric Beckman commented, “Creating a stateside film festival that recognizes the highest aspirations of animation as a cinematic art form has long been a dream of Gkids. We are thrilled…[to] bring exceptional animated filmmaking from around the world to audiences.”
Beckman is joined on the festival organizing committee by Patrick Eveno, Mickaël Marin, Marcel Jean, Michelle Sobrino-Stearns, Steven Gaydos, Peter Debruge, and Fumi Kithara.

Alex Karpovsky is no stranger to a film festival. In the past year alone, he has had movies premiere at South by Southwest (Fits and Starts), Sundance (Sidney Hall), Tiff (My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea) and Tribeca (Folk Hero & Funny Guy, in which Karpovsky plays a struggling stand-up comedian who gets roped into opening for his more successful singer-songwriter friend on tour). Yet, when Karpovsky phoned Et to discuss Folk Hero & Funny Guy, out now, he said that he's the least busy he's been in years, despite having also had a prominent role as Ray Ploshansky in the sixth and finale season of HBO's Girls.
"I feel like there are guys working a lot harder than I am," Karpovsky laughed, explaining that he started acting in his early 30s when he and his friends would act in one another's independent movies. "I tried not to [turn friends down] as much as possible, just because...

It may seem like there are only certain times of the year when the movies are worth watching, but the reality is that quality cinema hits theaters and VOD platforms all year round. We haven’t reached the halfway mark in 2017 yet, there are already dozens of quality new releases, many of which will continue to deserve singling out by the end of the year. IndieWire’s film team has seen a lot of them. The following ranked list was developed out of the aggregate scores from top 10 lists contributed by film writers in New York and Los Angeles. In order to qualify, a movie must have either received a theatrical release in 2017 or become available on a VOD platform during that time. Movies that received awards-qualifying runs in 2016 do not count. In many cases, multiple films tied for votes and are designated as such.

Chicago – In animation, the real innovators who evolve the artform are the risk takers who stamp their own inspiration on those cartoon images. Director Dash Shaw is one of those breakthroughs, who creates a work of anarchistic art in “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea.”
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Turning the institutional concept of high school literally upside down, the animated epic uses an extreme (and somewhat comic) disaster to separate the true heroes from the pretenders. The insecurities, social cliques and outsiders are all present, and writer/director Shaw uses them as society’s pecking order, on a Titanic that has become their school building. The voice actors are familiar – Susan Sarandon portrays a kick-ass lunch lady with gravel-voiced sincerity – but the real star is Dash Shaw’s cartoon vision, which mixes his simple line drawings with a kaleidoscope of amazing colors and surreal set pieces. With shadings of “Yellow...

Here’s a rare behind the scenes look at a new animated feature from Gkids. Scroll down to view the pre-production artwork from writer/director Dash Shaw and artists Andrew Lorenzi and Laura Knetzger:
Also from Gkids, here’s a quick summary of the film’s story:
From acclaimed cartoonist Dash Shaw (New School) comes an audacious debut that is equal parts disaster cinema, high school comedy and blockbuster satire, told through a dream-like mixed media animation style that incorporates drawings, paintings and collage. Dash (Jason Schwartzman) and his best friend Assaf (Reggie Watts) are preparing for another year at Tides High School muckraking on behalf of their widely-distributed but little-read school newspaper, edited by their friend Verti (Maya Rudolph). But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship, Dash learns of the administration’s cover-up that puts all the students in danger.

The slow specialty box office is picking up. “The Lost City of Z” (Bleecker Street) opened just below the numbers posted last week by “Colossal” (Neon) and “Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer” (Sony Pictures Classics) also opened to over $20,000. And “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary” (Abramorama) showed strong initial single-theater results, with Emily Dickinson story “A Quiet Passion” (Music Box) also showing some interest.
After a promising start, “Colossal” expanded quickly, showing strength among wider audiences, along with “Gifted” (Fox Searchlight) and “Their Finest” (Stx). And holocaust drama “The Zookeeper’s Wife” (Focus) passed the $10 million mark in only its third weekend.
Festival favorite “Maudie,” a Canadian-Irish coproduction set in a small Nova Scotia town, opened in four Canadian theaters ahead of its June stateside release from Sony Classics Pictures, with a three day total of around $60,000. It stars Sally Hawkins and...

Dash Shaw on His Influences and the Process of Creating ‘My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea’
My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea is more than just another animated comedy full of high school angst. Written and directed by Dash Shaw with a voice cast that includes Jason Schwartzman, Reggie Watts, Maya Rudolph, Lena Dunham, John Cameron Mitchell, and Susan Sarandon, the film enjoyed an acclaimed run on last fall’s festival circuit, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival and going on to screen at Fantastic Fest and the New York Film Festival. As the film arrives in limited release courtesy of Gkids, we spoke with the filmmaker about the inspiration behind and process of bringing the semi-autobiographical, small-budget high school adventure comedy to the big screen.

Hormones wreck havoc throughout the body, sending the fragile teenage ego into dismay, and for a good part of our formative years we exist in a state between childhood innocence and realizations of adulthood. Showcasing sharp wit and highly quotable dialogue, comic-book artist turned animator Dash Shaw has encapsulated all these feelings of inadequacy and self-loathing in his creatively unhinged first feature, My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, which stars an enviable voice cast of indie stars: Jason Schwartzman, Lena Dunham, Susan Sarandon, Maya Rudolph and Reggie Watts. Pulling from his own recollections of navigating the dangerous waters […]...

Before “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea” even begins, a pre-credits title card warns of stroboscopic effects to come. This is very considerate of the film, but it is the last moment viewers will see anything resembling thoughtful behavior from most of writer-director Dash Shaw’s animated teenage characters. The existence of high school sophomore Dash (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) is one in which it has been decided — entirely by Dash, of course — that since his acne has cleared up in time for the new school year, he will set about becoming popular and conquering his environment...

With its elevated Good Friday grosses, this weekend usually attracts multiple high-end releases, particularly those aimed at families. Not this year. Rival distributors ceded the ground to Universal’s “The Fate of the Furious,” the eighth entry in their wildly successful road-race franchise. What began in 2001 as a much simpler story about illegal street-car competitions has become a worldwide phenomenon that, by its seventh outing in 2015, grossed $1.5 billion.
“Furious 7” got unexpected traction with the tragic death of lead actor Paul Walker before that film completed production. But the series already had major momentum (2013’s entry opened around $100 million domestic and ended up about $550 million worldwide). But last time, domestic results increased by nearly 50 percent while the world doubled, with international returns to around 70 percent of the totals (and China leading the charge).
Don’t expect that trajectory to continue, but even if domestic results don’t quite match “Furious 7” ($147 million opening,...

Most of the animated movies that make their way to American theaters are, if nothing else, exceptionally polished: That talking bear may not make you laugh, but you will marvel at the state-of-the-art, photorealistic sheen of its fur, every strand painstakingly rendered. There’s nothing spit-shined, however, about the mixed-modes animation style of My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea. The characters, drawn with thick black lines, look like they’ve escaped from the margins of a used textbook; when they move, it’s with an imperfect analog quiver, betraying the frame-by-frame process that brings them to life. What’s more, they caper against abstract backdrops, splashed and scribbled with acrylic color, that often resemble a rotating portfolio of art-class projects. At one point, the frame literally drips with fresh paint. At another, the background becomes a literal sheet of lined paper. We’re worlds removed from the industry-standard...

Aside from the guaranteed global behemoth F8 of the Furious, a.k.a. Furious 8, a.k.a. All in the Fambly, this April is conspicuously blockbuster-lite. Anyone who's a true fan of the animation medium knows that there's much more out there than just Walt Disney Animation, Pixar, and those damned Minions films — you just have to dig a little deeper to find them. But thankfully, a new unconventional new animated movie is getting a pretty respectable release. It's called My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, and it's the debut feature from graphic novel writer Dash Shaw. The title doesn't lie on this one, peeps — it's about a group of kids who realize their school is built on a fault line and how they handle it when it slips into the water.
The big draw, aside from the unconventional animation style, is the voice cast, which includes Jason Schwartzman, Susan Sarandon, Reggie Watts, Lena Dunham, and more. The film arrives in theaters on April 14, 2017. Check out the trailer below.

Children are the future. Not a new idea. Not a totally original idea. Yet, it’s a proven fact that the younger generation dictates the direction of the future. “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea” subverts this traditional idea creating a darkly comedic and crude animated comedy. This is Dash Shaw’s (a celebrated cartoonist) first feature, and it does not disappoint.

"Help me and I'll invite you to my next party, I swear!" GKids has debuted the first official trailer for an animated film titled My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, which earned rave reviews out of the Toronto and New York Film Festivals last year. The hand-drawn film from acclaimed cartoonist Dash Shaw deals with exactly what the title says - an earthquake causes a high school to float into the sea, where it slowly sinks like a shipwreck. The impressive voice cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Reggie Watts, Lena Dunham, Maya Rudolph, Susan Sarandon, Alex Karpovsky, Louisa Krause, director John Cameron Mitchell, and Matthew Maher. Maybe it's just hearing Schwartzman in a school setting again, but this feels like a twisted mashup between Wes Anderson and Don Hertzfeldt, kind of like that. I'm so in. “Dave has been my partner since Gkids was a start-up and we worked elbow-to-elbow in an 8 x 12 office,” said Beckman. “He has been a crucial component of the company’s success to date.
“As much as anything, this new title is merely an acknowledgment of the role he is already serving – and I look forward to Dave’s continued leadership and innovative thinking as the company looks to grow in exciting new directions over the coming years.”
The Gkids 2017 roster includes Swiss Oscar submission My Life As A Zucchini, Us comedy My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea, and The Breadwinner, the upcoming feature from two-time Oscar-nominated Cartoon Saloon on which Beckman and Jesteadt serve as executive producers.
