Stars: Casper Van Dien, Ian Alexander, Megan Le, Elyse Dinh, Vivien Ngo | Written and Directed by Corey Deshon
“The following is based more on fact than fiction.” These words appear in Daughter’s opening credits. Combined with footage of two gas-masked figures, Father, and Brother chasing down a young woman it gives the feeling that we’re about to see another piece of low budget psycho cinema. When they catch up to her Father beats her to death with a hammer, which only reinforces that impression.
Impressions can be deceiving however and Corey Deshon who makes his feature film directorial debut, having previously written Trespassers, has something very different in mind even if it isn’t immediately obvious.
When we next see Father he’s with another woman, this one tied up on the garage floor. He tells her that he doesn’t want any harm to come to her...

“Selma” star David Oyelowo has played spies, saints, and even a guy who drowns a dog in “Chaos Walking,” but you’ve never seen him in a role quite like Svengali-esque architect Edward in “The Girl Before,” which premieres on HBO Max on Feb. 10. It’s based on the 2016 novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney, who adapted it for television.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as Jane, who’s trying recover from a tragic loss. She applies to live rent-free at One Fulgate House, an ultra-modern, minimalist house designed by Edward, who has some very strict rules for his tenants. Jane encounters his rarely-given approval, and he soon makes his romantic intentions towards her clear. He becomes her lover as well as her landlord, but when she learns the previous female tenant, Emma (Jessica Plummer) – who looked remarkably like her – died in the house, she wonders if she can really trust him.

Exclusive: Disney is reviving a cult classic favorite, The Rocketeer, with a new Disney+ movie titled The Return of the Rocketeer. David and Jessica Oyelowo are producing under their Yoruba Saxon banner. The project, written by Ed Ricourt, will also be a possible starring project for the Selma actor.
The original movie, released in 1991, was directed by Joe Johnston and adapted from Dave Stevens’ graphic novel. In that film, which made close to $47 million at the domestic box office and became a fan fave for the studio, a young pilot stumbles onto a prototype jetpack that allows him to become a high-flying masked hero.
The Return of the Rocketeer will have an all-new creative directive, with Ricourt’s story focusing on a retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the Rocketeer mantle.
Brigham Taylor is also producing alongside Yoruba Saxon. Mortal Media exec producing. This is the first film under Yoruba...

"I have no idea who you are or how I got here." Vertical Ent has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Solitary, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Luke Armstrong, who finished this film last year during lockdown. This is another low budget sci-fi film with a cool concept that could turn out bad, or could be pretty good. Solitary is a contained sci-fi film about a man who wakes up inside a room to discover he's a prisoner sent into space to form Earth's first colony, and worse - his cell mate Alana is hell bent on destroying everything. Starring Johnny Sachon and Lottie Tolhurst as the two prisoners, with Michael Condron, Brian Bovell, and Ben Valentine. This kind of even feels like a lockdown film - two people contained in a studio apartment, in space, arguing about what to do when they get out.

Exclusive: Multiple Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Emmy-nominated actor, producer and director David Oyelowo and his wife, actress, writer and producer Jessica Oyelowo, have signed a two-year first-look deal with Walt Disney Pictures for feature length films across all platforms at the studio.
The Oyelowos will produce through their Yoruba Saxon banner, which is focused on creating values-based content for all quadrants, with an aim to shift the culture and color outside the lines.
Yoruba Saxon’s most recent film and sixth is the upcoming family adventure The Water Man, which marks David’s feature length directorial debut, in which he stars and also features Jessica. The Water Man follows a boy who sets out on a quest to save his ill mother by searching for a mythic figure said to have magical healing powers. Rosario Dawson, Maria Bello and Alfred Molina also star. The pic originally made its world premiere at TIFF last September.

"The whole idea of this show is to test your will to go on." Wild Eye Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a strange horror called Human Zoo, which is the most generic descriptive name for the film possible. The internet watches live, as reality-show contestants struggle against time to see who will stay in solitary confinement the longest and take home the one million dollar prize. The film stars Robert Carradine (the younger half-brother of David Carradine), Trista Robinson, Rachel Amanda Bryant, Jose Rosete, Jessica Cameron, Megan Le, and Heather Dorff. Even though this is supposed to be commenting on snuff films, it just looks and sounds and smells like a snuff film itself. Not sure how this can be entertaining. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for John E Seymore's Human Zoo, direct from YouTube: The internet watches live, as reality-show contestants struggle against time...

Mania is the latest film to be directed by Jessica Cameron, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Saturday 20th January. I got chance to talk to Jessica and ask her a few questions about what we can expect from Mania, the inspirations behind the story and the difficulties of working on an independent film.
What can we expect from Mania?
Mania is a lesbian love story which has been described as a cross between Thelma and Louise (1991) and Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) which I think is an accurate description. It’s about these women who have been in a relationship for a couple of years. They are madly, passionately, deeply in love and unfortunately, one of the women suffers from Mania. Circumstances in the first five minutes of the film cause anxiety to spike and shit happens. Her lover’s reaction is...
