Mark Rylance and Johnny Flynn both play female characters, Olivia and Viola - not only does such cross-dressing follow a historical tradition, it also reflects the play's theme of gender fluidity. Furthermore, eleven years before this film was released, Mark Rylance was Artistic Director of the Globe theatre for an acclaimed all-male performance of Twelfth Night, with him also playing the part of Olivia.
