I’m not sure “Ozark” ever improved upon “Kaleidoscope.” The first season’s eighth episode takes place entirely in flashback, as director Ellen Kuras and writer Ryan Farley bounce between the pivotal choices that precede the Byrdes’ fateful decision to start laundering money. Wendy (Laura Linney) is fighting through an extended depression, brought on by a complicated miscarriage, and she’s doubly frustrated by a job market closed off to a woman who spent a few years having kids. Marty (Jason Bateman), who’s typically mocked for his cautious nature as “the numbers guy,” is being courted by Camino Del Rio (Esai Morales), who wants to hire the Chicago-based financial advisor to handle his accounts, even after (or because) Marty spots suspicious activity on the books.

There’s mannered, there’s manic, and then there’s the malfunctioning pinball-machine delirium that Ben Whishaw brings to “Surge”: a blinking, buzzing, flashing clatter of hyper-accelerated impulses, chicken-fried synapses and staggered hypnic jerks that never culminate in sleep. You wouldn’t expect stillness from a film called “Surge,” and in that respect only does Whishaw zig where you expect him to zig — to say nothing of his character, a humdrum airport worker who one day snaps in spectacularly feral fashion, embarking on the unlikeliest of London crime sprees. It’s quite a performance, sure to exhilarate some and aggravate others, and it joins the dots of Aneil Karia’s stylish if somewhat overstimulated debut feature while adding several disconnected ones of its own.
A rare shot of genuinely frenzied energy in British genre cinema, “Surge” seems likely to prompt comparisons to the recent work of Benny and Josh Safdie — in particular,...

I'm actually really excited about The Walking Dead Season 9! I think this next season is going to give the series a much needed boost freshness. We've got a new trailer for you to watch today called "Kaleidoscope" and it's a great stylish trailer that fans of the series will appreciate. It highlight the oldest surviving characters of the series and the helicopter.
As you all know by now, Season 9 is going to feature a significant time jump and the character's way of life has drastically changed It's like they've gone back in time, which is a really cool element. We also know that this will be Andrew Lincoln's final season as Rick Grimes in the series. Most people think that he's going to be killed off, but I'm not convinced of that.

The length of episodes is something agonized over by critics and usually ignored by fans — until it dramatically shifts from precedent. Of late, there have been plenty of series dabbling with episode lengths that send DVRs into panic mode and have audiences checking their watches.
But there’s no time to glance at the clock if you’re in the grips of great television. Though critics are right to side with a tight edit 99 times out of a 100, one of the exciting things about modern television is its ingenuity. Not all long TV episodes are created equally, and on this weeks’ Very Good TV Podcast, IndieWire TV Editor Liz Shannon Miller and TV Critic Ben Travers discussed a few of the better examples out there.
If a half-hour comedy busts out a super-sized 40-minute episode and it works, so be it; same goes for a feature-length episode that usually clocks in at an hour.

In 2015 it was announced that Frightfest were set to bring us, under a “Frightfest Presents” banner, some of the horrific delights of their Glasgow and London festivals on DVD and VOD thanks to a partnership with Icon Film Distribution. And whilst that partnership did garner a number of releases – including the likes of Some Kind of Hate, Emelie, Night of the Living Deb and The Sand – the label went dark soon after, with not only the two-year deal coming to an end, but also likely due to the fact that Frightfest partner Icon had some financial woes in 2017, eventually been sold to Kaleidoscope in March of this year.
Skip forward to today and news reaches us that the Frightfest Presents label is reborn, this time in co-operation with Signature Entertainment – a label who we have supported since the early days of their direct to DVD B-movie start-up, with titles such as SnowBeast,...

Exclusive: One of the most obvious but routinely encountered hazards for a growing distributor is over-reach: buying or marketing beyond your means. So far, that’s a pitfall UK outfit Altitude Films has avoided with aplomb.
Set up by former Optimum Releasing founder Will Clarke in 2012, the carefully managed integrated firm, comprising distribution, sales and production, is coming off its biggest year to date, despite the challenging UK landscape. Four movies crossed $1M for the distribution arm in 2017: Moonlight (which took a company record $6M), Loving Vincent ($1.4M), The Florida Project ($1.3M) and Lady Macbeth (1.1M). Six of the company’s top ten movies have been released in the last 12 months.
Much of the growing distribution slate is made up of rising UK talent (Michael Pearce’s Toronto drama Beast is released in around 70 screens this weekend), festival favorites and commercially-minded documentaries...

Kaleidoscope to represent The Works’s title at this week’s Efm.
UK outfit Kaleidoscope has struck a deal to take over representation of The Works Film Group’s sales slate.
Commencing at this week’s European Film Market In Berlin, Kaleidoscope will handle sales on all films in The Works’ catalogue, including recent releases California Typewriter, The Climb and The Last Photograph, as well as the back catalogue.
The deal was negotiated by Spencer Pollard, CEO of Kaleidoscope, Deepak Sikka, director of The Works and Robert Croucher, founder of business management consultancy Hatton & Berkeley.
Sikka said that the deal meant “consolidating certain ancillary areas of [The Works’] business” and that it will “provide an enlarged platform” for the company’s development slate and films in production. Screen understands that The Works will focus primarily on acquiring titles for distribution and its own productions going forward.
Pollard explained that the deal is an extension of previous collaborations between the two companies...

They say you should never meet your idols, and this short film learns that lesson the hard way.
“Pumpkin” centers on Brian, a Mel Gibson superfan who has “What Women Want” and “The Patriot” posters tacked on his bedroom wall and who attends a Mel Gibson “support group.” Brian wishes he could go back in time and stop his idol from making “The Beaver” (don’t we all?) and one of his fellow superfans has a plan. Taking a page from “Black Mirror,” Brian is given a Tamagotchi that transports him back in time, but what he discovers there will change him and the course of movie history forever.

Lots of mentally fragile guys are obsessed with their mothers, especially when it comes to cinematic tropes. Of course, there's Psycho, a giant of a film and a close cousin to Rupert Jones' debut feature, Kaleidoscope. Out today on VOD and in select theatres from IFC Midnight, Kaleidoscope is the tale of an ex-con who's having trouble re-integrating into society. Jones' brother, the always-terrific Toby Jones (Harry Potter, Atomic Blonde, The Hunger Games, Berberian Sound Studio), plays the disturbed man Carl, who we follow through his apartment, some memories, and perhaps misremembered events. Elements of Psycho echo within Kaleidoscope, but so too does Stanley Kubrick's masterful The Shining, Roman Polanski's The Tenant, and Spider (David Cronenberg's 2007 film centering on a schizophrenic man also re-entering society played by Ralph Fiennes). Carl meets up with...

There may be no better actor alive to play a socially maladroit misfit than Toby Jones. It's a fact of which his brother Rupert Jones also seems to be aware, since he's written and directed a terrific vehicle for him. A dark psychological thriller clearly influenced by Alfred Hitchcock (who Jones played so memorably in The Girl), Kaleidoscope, also starring veteran British actress Anne Reid (The Mother), provides juicy opportunities for its leads to deliver tour-de-force performances — and they don't disappoint.

Hard to believe, but December is nearly upon us, and that means we have a brand new batch of Digital and VOD releases to look forward to over the next few weeks. December’s releases kick off on the 1st with Somebody’s Darling, and December 5th is one of the busiest days of the month with six different titles making their digital bow: The Gatehouse, The Doll Master, Apocalypse Road, Flashburn, K-shop, and The White King. Then, just a few days later, IFC Midnight is releasing the psychological thriller Kaleidoscope, and on December 12th, both The Cutlass and Flatliners (2017) come home.

"You left clues everywhere..." IFC has debuted the first official trailer for an intriguing psychological thriller titled Kaleidoscope, from writer/director Rupert Jones. The film stars Toby Jones as middle-aged man just released from prison. The film is apparently about his relationship to his mother, and asks the question: "is it possible to escape our past?" The cast includes Anne Reid, Sinead Matthews, Manjinder Virk, Karl Johnson, Deborah Findlay, and Frederick Schmidt. This looks like a creepy, mysterious head-trip kind of film, but actually quite good with seemingly lots of twists. Per the description: "At the heart of this modern day Psycho are some unsettling questions: Can we ever escape the role in which we are cast by our early circumstances? Must a perpetrator first be a victim?" This trailer is definitely worth checking out. She’s played Valerie Tatlock in Coronation Street and Daniel Craig’s lover in The Mother, and now stars in the thriller Kaleidoscope. Anne Reid talks to Rebecca Nicholson about awards, Victoria Wood and why it’s good to show older people falling in love on screen
‘What can I tell you without giving the whole plot away? That’s the problem,” smiles Anne Reid. We’re meeting to talk about Kaleidoscope, a knotty, taut and claustrophobic thriller starring Reid and Toby Jones, directed by his brother, Rupert Jones. It’s the kind of brilliantly insidious film that reveals its secrets slowly and cleverly. It’s far better to see it knowing absolutely nothing at all about it. Which, of course, makes it very difficult to talk about. “Well, let’s not tell people then,” Reid decides, firmly. “I play the mother of Toby Jones. It was a great part.
