After Aetius presents his plan to stop Attila's advance at Orleans, he and Placidia leave the palace. Two soldiers open the doors for them, and the door to the viewer's right hits another soldier standing guard there.
Much of the Roman military equipment worn by the legionnaires of the West Roman Empire are based on the Principate Period (30 BCE-284 AD), which is the most common era for Roman films. Yet the Roman Army had undergone major changes by the time of the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains in 451 AD (the series final battle scene.) By this time Roman Soldiers used the Spatha (long sword), oval shields, chain or scale mails, and helmets that more fully covered the head. Yet in the battle scenes soldiers are still using square shields (Scutum), the Gladius (short sword), and Principate-era helmets, all of which had been obsolete for nearly two centuries. Additionally, while half the troops in this final battle are correctly wearing chain mail, the other half wear the Lorica Segmentata, the famous segmented banded armor of the early legions that was abandoned in the 2nd Century AD.
