In the tradition of “The Naked Gun”, the 1950’s detective crime drama series “Tightrope!" will be ‘re-imagined’ as a slapstick comedy series for The Roku Channel, fronted by Emmy winner Ty Burrell and executive produced by “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston for his Moonshot Entertainment:
“…through reimagined dialogue and a new lead actor in Ty Burrell, ‘Tightrope!’ reshapes the drama of the vintage 1950’s series into a slapstick comedy, where Burrell plays a lone wolf detective following cases city to city, while he searches for his long-lost love who got away…”
“I was inspired by the ‘on-the-nose’ old drama series of the 50's,” said Cranston, “to mess with the whole thing and create a new version of a lunatic comedy, never seen before in a TV series.
Cranston’s Moonshot previously produced “Your Honor” (Showtime), “Sneaky Pete” (Amazon), “Dangerous Book for Boys” (Amazon), “Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams” (Amazon...

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

The 1980s enjoys a privileged, some might even argue inflated position in the sci-fi pantheon. In the US, it was the decade that gave us two thirds of the original Star Wars trilogy, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Terminator and Tron. In TV land, Star Trek got a brand new Generation, Quantums Leapt, Knights Rode, and of course, Alf.
But on the other side of the pond, British science fiction television was doing things the way we British always have – for less money, and a bit more bleak. But it wasn’t all creepy John Wyndham adaptations and hostile alien invasions, the 1980s also delivered a couple of British space comedy classics, along with the most underrated series in sci-fi history.

Exclusive: Jim Hosking, the award-winning British filmmaker behind idiosyncratic Sundance titles The Greasy Strangler and An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin, has been tapped to direct Gleek, a sports action comedy that has Tim Heidecker and Dave Kneebone of renowned comedy-focused production company Abso Lutely amongst its producers.
Also produced by former Orchard and Idw Entertainment head Paul Davidson (upcoming Electric Dreams remake) and screenwriter Fabian Marquez (Better Luck Tomorrow), who together penned the script, the film tells the story of a hapless young man who discovers that his overactive salivary glands qualify him to compete in a secret, underground competition that holds the key to restoring his family’s good name.

Veteran film executive Paul Davidson has acquired the remake rights to “Electric Dreams,” the 1984 film written and produced by Rusty Lemorande.
Davidson — who previously ran The Orchard and Idw Entertainment — struck the deal with Lemorande, who retained the rights to the film after its release nearly four decades ago. Brian T. Arnold, whose script “In the End” appeared on the 2021 Black List and is being produced by Sister, will pen the new movie.
In a statement, Davidson described the original “Electric Dreams” as “an iconic film that left a deep imprint on me from the first time I saw it.” He adds: “Released in what is clearly one of the best decades for film ever, it remains a classic that feels especially prescient today. Joining forces with Brian and Rusty is immensely exciting.”

[This story contains spoilers from Justified: City Primeval‘s two-episode premiere.]
From The Wonder Years and Early Edition to Justified old and new, you’ve likely seen Michael Dinner’s name on your TV screen for as long as you can remember. Dinner has been directing since the early ’80s, including eight episodes of the original Justified. But ever since he co-wrote an episode of the Elmore Leonard-inspired series in 2015, he’s done a bit more writing and even served as co-showrunner of 2017’s Electric Dreams. So, when it came time to revive Justified and original series showrunner Graham Yost was committed to an Apple TV+ deal, Dinner, along with Dave Andron, stepped up to become co-showrunner of Justified: City Primeval, which combines Leonard’s 1980 crime novel, City Primeval, with the Raylan Givens-led world of Justified.

Aftersun (Charlotte Wells)
One of last year’s most resonant films, Aftersun looks at the scratchy dynamics between a father and daughter while on vacation. It’s about memory, the finite nature of the relationships in our lives, and the difficulties of a parent’s diminishing mental health. Charlotte Wells knows where to put the camera in her debut—undeterred from taking risks, from placing her characters outside of the frame, from looking at shadows instead of the people themselves. Aftersun is a rare, tremendous first film, full of heart and focused melancholy; it breaks you down and fills you up simultaneously. The consistent inclusion of camcorder footage, and the fact that it enhances the story rather than becoming a distraction, further...

Nothing catches fire in Valentina Maurel’s I Have Electric Dreams, but the atmosphere is so inflammable, the air so taut, everything could ignite at any moment. True to its title, this cumulatively harrowing tale of a 16-year-old girl and her estranged, anger-prone father feels like it’s been yanked out of an electric storm. Even the frames carry a kind of static, throbbing in-sync with parent and child as they crash into each other only to drift away and collide again, each confrontation more seismic than the others. To be watching Maurel’s feature debut is to bear witness to a self-destructive waltz; there are scenes of almost unbearable sadness and loneliness, but Dreams is no dirge, and all dread the film accrues only makes its closing catharsis so much more affecting.
The girl’s name is Eva (Daniela Marín Navarro); her father’s Martín (Reinaldo Amien Gutiérrez). We...

The smashing success of "Black Mirror" is likely due to the crushing anxiety that technology has and continues to infect the entire world with. There are few subjects as universally relatable as the Internet, which has bridged communication with people around the globe at the same time as it has created dangerous rifts within communities. Although the series began on the United Kingdom-based Channel 4 network in 2011, executives there didn't gel with its creative direction or its budget. As a result, "Black Mirror" moved to Netflix starting in season 3, which has undoubtedly helped the show pick up a more international audience.
Despite its global success and appeal, the series started off as quite a British venture, utilizing an extensive list of British actors and focusing on British culture and politics on more than one occasion, including the debut episode "The National Anthem" and the Boris Johnson-inspired piece "The Waldo Moment.

Elamedia will be releasing the film in Spanish theaters later this year.
Set in Costa Rica, “Electric Dreams” follows Eva (Daniela Marin Navarro), a strong-willed 16-year-old girl who lives with her mother, her younger sister and their cat, but desperately wants to move in with her estranged father (Reinaldo Amien Guttierez). Since the TV academy began regularly honoring original music scores in the 1960s, there has essentially always been a clear distinction between compositions for continuing and limited series. The Best Music for Limited Series Emmy category was established early on in order to adequately recognize the music behind single-season or one-off scripted programs apart from traditional comedy and drama series. This year’s five contenders are about as eclectic as can be, with plots that collectively span multiple centuries and continents.
The current Best Music for Limited Series nominees are “1883” (Paramount+), “Moon Knight” (Disney+), “Station Eleven” (HBO Max), “A Very British Scandal” (Prime Video) and “The White Lotus” (HBO). To determine which one is most likely to take the gold, let’s take a look at each score individually. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions in this and 26 other Creative Arts categories by September 3.

Mireille Enos is returning to AMC.
Deadline is reporting that the star who headlined The Killing for the cabler has joined the cast of Straight Man.
The series keeps Bob Odenkirk in the AMC family following his role as Saul Goodman in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
"Straight Man is a mid-life crisis tale set at Railton College, told in the first person by William Henry Devereaux, Jr. (Odenkirk), the unlikely chairman of the English department in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt," reads the cabler's official description.
“We could not be more thrilled to have Mireille on board to play Lily,” co-showrunners Aaron Zelman (Damages) and Paul Lieberstein (The Office) said in a statement.
“She brings with her a steamer trunk full of dramatic chops, an unflinching eagerness to explore character, and a megawatt smile that absolutely lights up every Zoom. She’s a delight.

Philip K. Dick is one of the most prolific science fiction authors of all time, and his short stories and novels have been fodder for frequent screen adaptations. Movies like "Blade Runner," "Total Recall," "Minority Report," "A Scanner Darkly," and "The Adjustment Bureau" all derive from Dick's bibliography, as do the Prime Video series "The Man in the High Castle" and "Electric Dreams." "Jane," however, the latest Prime project drawn from Philip K. Dick, looks instead at the famed writer's own personal life. The title stems from the author's twin sister, Jane, who died six weeks after their premature birth and whose memory went on to...

It's been over three years since we flew with Captain Mercer and his crew. In every way, The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Episode 1 is Epic with a capital E, which is also an E for Electric Dreams, the premiere's title.
Electric Dreams, of course, is a reference to the literary source material for the film Bladerunner, Philip K. Dick's novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but there's another literary reference when you consider Isaac's attempt to die in the light of Shakespeare and Hamlet's description of suicide, "To sleep, perchance to dream."
It's a darker foray for a premiere than one might expect for Seth MacFarlane's homage to Trek, given the humor and slapstick that set it apart from Star Trek: Discovery back in 2017 when both shows launched, but undeniably impressive in scope, style, and sentiment.
Kudos to the production team that pulled out all the...

“They didn’t necessarily want it to sound like ‘Downton Abbey,’” recollects Harry Gregson-Williams of the early thoughts he and his brother Rupert Gregson-Williams received from the producers of the HBO series “The Gilded Age.” Created by Julian Fellowes of “Downton” fame, the show is set in 1882 New York during the “gilded age” of robber barons, sweeping industrialization, and vast sums of money. “This was a time in the country in the United States that’s exciting and there’s energy and money being thrown everywhere,” notes Rupert on how the show differs from its creator’s prior work. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
For the main title theme, the Gregson-Williams brothers focused on marrying the sounds of old money and new money. The composers wrote a theme for the Russell family, including Morgan Spector and Carrie Coon’s railroad tycoons George and Bertha Russell, that incorporates an “ostinato...

From the opening frames of HBO’s series “The Gilded Age,” the music of composers Harry Gregson-Williams and Rupert Gregson-Williams gives viewers a sense of the ambition and drive of “new money” in conflict with the “old money” of 1880s New York.
The brothers — Harry based in Los Angeles, Rupert just outside London — generally work on different projects, and most often for features.
But both are past Emmy nominees and this is their second TV collaboration, after 2019’s Hulu series “Catch-22.” Given the sheer volume of music demanded by “The Gilded Age,” nearly six hours for the 10 episodes, they were happy to reunite professionally.
“It was good to have two sets of hands on it,” says Harry. “Upwards or 35, sometimes 40 minutes of music [per episode] had to be written, approved, orchestrated and actually played live. It was a big job, and it stretched us.”
Finding the appropriate musical style was an intriguing challenge,...

However, Michaela Coel has always said that the 12-episode series, which is a co-production between HBO and the BBC, was intended as a one-off. “When you see the final episode, you’ll know,” she said last year.

Mark Lanza, president of the Motion Picture Sound Editors, has been working from home since the coronavirus shut everything down. That’s the new norm for Lanza and many other sound editors as they learn to adapt to the pandemic.
As president of the organization, which presents the Golden Reel Awards each year, Lanza’s concerns include the delays the crisis has caused to the industry’s workflow. Even if production does resume, it will be a while before material gets to post-production and to sound editors. “We were one of the last people to wrap up when they stopped filming,” Lanza says. “And now, we’re going to be one of the last people to start up again.”
Lanza’s next gig, on a project he declines to reveal, isn’t due to start until December. “A lot of good people are out of work,” he says.

The legacy of “Room 104” goes well beyond what did or did not happen within those four walls. When the series launched in June 2017, The Duplass brothers’ episodic anthology was one of the few HBO original programs to air outside of Sunday nights. Just two years into launching HBO Now — the former cabler’s first standalone streaming offering — premium content was needed to help justify the premium cost ($15/month). Co-creators and executive producers Mark and Jay Duplass were happy to debut their latest brainchild on Friday nights, especially after their first HBO venture, “Togetherness,” only lasted two seasons on Sundays before getting the axe. That half-hour comedy wasn’t expensive compared to shows like “Game of Thrones” or “Ballers,” but their plan for “Room 104″ offered big stars and bigger ideas on an even lower budget.

Greg Kinnear has signed on for a leading role in the Starz pilot “Shining Vale.”
He joins previously announced series star Courtney Cox. “Shining Vale” is a half-hour horror comedy about a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Pat (Cox), who’s convinced she’s either depressed or possessed – turns out, the symptoms are exactly the same.
Kinnear will star as Terry, Pat’s husband. He is described as a sweet, sensitive guy who enjoys a good laugh almost as much as a good cry. He assumed he was married to the perfect wife until she had an affair with their young handyman, destroying the kitchen island, and maybe his marriage. Ever the optimist, Terry is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his family together,...

HBO has released the official trailer for “I May Destroy You,” its hotly-anticipated topical new TV series from Michaela Coel, the BAFTA-winning creator of “Chewing Gum.” Coel executive produces, writes, co-directs and stars in the series, which the network promises will be bold and candid, exploring the question of sexual consent in the present day given how much the landscape of dating and relationships has changed. And given Coel’s previous work, as well as the look of the trailer, it likely will be provocative.
HBO is certainly no stranger to envelope-pushing series. And “I May Destroy You” will likely fit in perfectly on the network that Zendaya’s “Euphoria” — or any number of its hard-hitting documentaries — call home.
Previously titled “January 22nd,” the official synopsis for “I May Destroy You” reads: “Set in London, where gratification is only an app away, the story centers on Arabella (Coel), a carefree,...

“Cyrano de Bergerac” sure gets around. Ever since Edmond Rostand’s play about the 17th-century French dramatist became boffo box office in 1897, the story has been adapted countless times in countless ways. Ayn Rand used it as inspiration for the 1945 movie “Love Letters,” which was set in World War II; “Electric Dreams” gave it a 1984 sci-fi spin; Steve Martin’s “Roxanne” transplanted it to a Washington firehouse; “Futurama” and “Bob’s Burgers” both used it as inspiration for animated TV episodes; and Netflix borrowed from the story for “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser,” a teen comedy that aired in September 2018.
Those projects only scratch the surface of Cyrano spinoffs, and there’s still life in the old guy. In fact, Netflix is back on the Bergerac beat with Alice Wu’s “The Half of It,” which premieres on the service on Friday. That’s only two days after the film won...
